Trita Parsi, vice president of the Quincy Institute for Responsible Statecraft, has insisted that Israel underestimated the Iran’s ability to regroup after they successfully killed some Iranian top military officials.

The Iranian-born Swedish activist disclosed this while speaking on the series of intense missile exchanges between Israel and Iran in the past couple of days.

“They [Israel] underestimated the Iranian ability to regroup after the Israelis very successfully targeted the top leadership of the Iranian military and managed to kill several of them,” Parsi told CNN.

“Iranian missiles are successful in penetrating all layers of Israel’s air defense systems,” he said.

On Thursday, Israeli military launched different airstrikes on Iran killing most of the country’s top military officials.

But Iran retaliated on Friday and early Saturday, firing hundreds of many deadly ballistic missiles towards Israel, killing three persons, as Israel claimed.

On Sunday, Israel’s Home Front Command warned the citizens to stay away from gathering and minimised movement in public spaces in the country amid its ongoing conflict with Iran.

However, casualties are mounting on both sides as Israel and Iran widen attacks.

“What has been happening in Benue is condemnable and entirely unacceptable. Those responsible for these atrocities are terrorists and enemies of us all. Nigeria will win,” he wrote.

The Benue State Police Command says it has arrested 14 people after a peaceful protest in Makurdi turned violent on Sunday.

According to the police, some hoodlums hijacked the protest and set a truck on fire, burning the driver alive.

The incident happened in Apir, a community on the outskirts of Makurdi.

This was made known in a statement issued by the spokesperson of the Command, SP Catherine Udeme Edet, and shared with journalists on Sunday.

“While the right to peaceful protest is respected and protected, it is important that such actions remain lawful and non-violent,” the statement read.

The protest started at Wurukum Roundabout in Makurdi, where some youths gathered to express their anger over recent killings in the state.

The Commissioner of Police, CP Ifeanyi Emenari, and the Deputy Governor of Benue State, Barr. John Ode, visited the protest ground to calm the situation.

“Unfortunately, the crowd refused to listen and the protest was hijacked by violent people who even attempted to attack the Deputy Governor,” the police said.

“Officers quickly stepped in and used non-lethal methods such as smoke and water to disperse the crowd and safely evacuate the deputy governor.

“The police confirmed that no one was injured during this operation.”

However, things worsened later in Apir where another group of hoodlums blocked a road, stopped a moving truck, and set it on fire.

The driver, who is yet to be identified, was trapped inside and burnt to death.

The police said, “The command has so far arrested 14 suspects in connection with these incidents. They will be prosecuted accordingly. Investigations are ongoing to arrest other suspects and those who planned the attack.”

The police also advised the public to always remain peaceful when expressing grievances and not allow criminals to take advantage of such gatherings.

Benue State Police Command has accused youths, who staged a protest in Makurdi on Sunday following the deadly attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen, of attempting to attack the deputy governor of the State, Barr. John Ode.

DAILY POST reports that hundreds of Benue youths staged a protest in Makurdi to draw global attention to the incessant and deadly attacks by suspected Fulani herdsmen across the state.

The protest was triggered by the recent attack in Yelewata community, Guma Local Government Area of the state where nearly 250 people were killed.

However, some police officers were seen at the protest site firing teargas to disperse the angry protesters, who converged at the Wurkum roundabout.

Reacting to the matter, the Police Public Relations Officer of the command, DSP Udeme Edet explained that the deputy governor visited the protest site to address the youth but “unfortunately, the crowd declined to be addressed”.

In a statement on Monday, the PPRO said “the protest was soon hijacked by disruptive elements who attempted to attack the Deputy Governor.

“Police officers swiftly intervened using non-lethal crowd control measures, including smoke and water cannons, to prevent harm and safely evacuate the Deputy Governor from the scene.

“No casualties or injuries were recorded during this operation”.

The Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps, NSCDC, Abia State Command has said that it has been playing important roles to ensure that there is peace in Abia State communities, especially in farms.

Abia State Commandant of NSCDC, Commandant Akinsola Aderemi said this at Police Officers Mess, Umuahia, during the 1st Abia NUJ Agric Show 2025, which was organized by the leadership of the NUJ in Abia to tackle hunger in the land.

The NSCDC Commandant said that Agro Rangers Unit of the NSCDC in Abia State, which is tasked with maintaining peace in farms and agricultural environments, has been doing everything to ensure that Abia farmers are safe in their farms.

Represented by the Officer in charge of Agro Rangers Unit,  I. White,  Commandant Aderemi noted that when farms are made safe, food production would increase.

He disclosed that the Agro Rangers Unit of NSCDC in the Abia Command was playing a role in solving a recent misunderstanding between farmers and herdsmen in the Obehie area of the State.

He commended the leadership of the Abia NUJ for the Agric Show concept and for providing the mechanism to sensitise Nigerians on the need to go into agriculture.

In their speeches, the Chairman of Abia State Council of Ndieze, Eze Linus Nto Mbah and the Chairman of the occasion, Dr Boniface Iheanyichukwu Ariekpere urged Abia youths to defeat hunger and unemployment by embracing agric business.

Earlier in his speech, the Chairman of Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Abia State Council, Chidi Asonye raised the alarm that many Nigerians are groaning in  hunger caused by rising cost of food in the market.

He explained that the 1st Abia NUJ Agric Show was a response to the National emergency of food insecurity.

He called for urgent and coordinated efforts to reverse the ugly trend.
