The Nigerian Meteorological Agency, NiMet, has forecast thundery, rainy weather activities from Monday to Wednesday across the country.

NiMet’s weather outlook released on Sunday in Abuja predicted thunderstorms (with or without rains) during the early morning hours over parts of Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara, Taraba, Adamawa and Kaduna States in the northern region.

It said the rest of the region will be sunny with patches of cloud.

According to the agency, thunderstorms with rains are expected during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Jigawa, Yobe, Kano, Katsina, Gombe, Sokoto, Kebbi, Zamfara and Kaduna States.

In the central region, it said morning thunderstorms with rains are expected over parts of Niger, Plateau and the Federal Capital Territory while the remaining parts of the region are anticipated to be sunny with cloud patches.

The agency stated further that isolated thunderstorms (with or without rain) are expected over parts of Plateau, Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Nasarawa, Kogi and Niger States during the afternoon or evening periods.

NiMet predicted cloudy skies over the southern region with prospects of morning light rains over parts of Ogun, Lagos, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.

The agency also envisaged afternoon or evening thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Ogun, Lagos, Ondo, Oyo, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Anambra, Abia, Edo, Delta, Rivers, Bayelsa, Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.

For Tuesday in the northern region, sunny skies with patches of clouds are expected in most of the region with chances of morning scattered thunderstorms with heavy rains over parts of Adamawa, Taraba, Borno, Yobe, Sokoto, Jigawa, Bauchi and Kaduna States.

Thunderstorms with light rains are expected during the afternoon or evening hours over parts of Taraba, Adamawa, Gombe, Borno, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, and Bauchi States.

It anticipated morning thunderstorms with light rains over parts of the Federal Capital Territory, Niger, Kogi and Benue States in the central region.

The agency further expected thunderstorms with light rains over parts of Nasarawa, the Federal Capital Territory, Benue, Kogi and Plateau States later in the day.

It predicted cloudy skies over the southern region with chances of morning rains over parts of Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.

The agency forecast thunderstorms with light rains over the southern region during the afternoon or evening periods.

For Wednesday, morning thunderstorms are anticipated over parts of Zamfara, Kebbi, Borno, Yobe, Kaduna, Kano, Katsina, Jigawa, Gombe, Bauchi and Sokoto states in the northern region.

Thunderstorms with heavy rains are expected over parts of Borno, Yobe, Bauchi, Kano, Katsina, Kaduna, Jigawa, Taraba and Adamawa States during the afternoon to evening periods.

For the central region, cloudy skies are anticipated over the region during the morning hours.

Thunderstorms with moderate rains are expected across the region in the afternoon to evening periods.

For the southern region, there are prospects of light rains across the entire region throughout the day.

It said strong winds may precede the rains in areas where thunderstorms are likely to occur, and that the public should take adequate precaution and ensure that loose objects are fastened to avoid collision.

According to the agency, driving under heavy rain should be avoided and electrical Disconnect appliances should be disconnected from electrical sockets.

While advising residents to stay away from tall trees to avoid impact from falling branches and broken trees, NiMet also urged airline operators to get airport-specific weather reports (flight documentation) from NiMet for effective planning in their operations.

The fact finding committee set up by the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Owerri branch to unravel the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault on a lawyer, has indicted the Assistant Chief Registrar, High Court, Owerri, Augustina Emenike, for assaulting Barrister Olachi Madonna Anosike.

The incident, DAILY POST reports, took place at the Chief Magistrate Court, Awaka in Owerri North Magisterial District, headed by Mrs. Emenike.

The fact finding committee, headed by Barrister Chetachi Udeh, while presenting its findings at the Bar Centre, Owerri, indicted the Assistant Chief Registrar, Mrs. Augustina Chinwe Emenike for the offence, but added that the Chairman of the High Court Welfare Scheme had written to the branch an apology letter on her behalf.

The letter was read during the presentation.

Receiving the report, the NBA Chairman, Owerri branch, Chris Ihentuge, while confirming the report asserted that the committee found the Registrar culpable.

He also confirmed that a letter of apology, though not from the Registrar, but written by the Chairman of the High Court Welfare Scheme on her behalf, was read out.

“The Executive Committee will review the report and the apology letter and act on the implications of both and take necessary actions,” he said.

Commenting on the outcome of the report of the committee, some lawyers, who don’t want their names in print, called for adequate sanctions on the Assistant Chief Registrar so as to serve as a deterrent to others.

They recommended that the Registrar should personally apologize to the NBA Owerri Branch and to Barrister Anosike in particular, adding that appropriate punishment should be taken on her by the judiciary.

The people of Obiangwu autonomous community in Ngor-Okpala LGA, Imo State, have staged a protest, challenging an alleged imposition of Interim Town Union Executive on the people of the area by the Chairperson of the Local Council, Chika Ibekwe without proper consultation.

In registering their grievances, the indigenes of the community staged a protest at the offices of the Speaker Imo State House of Assembly, Mr. Chike Olembe, and the Commissioner for Local Government and Chief Tenancy Affairs, Mrs. Ruby Emele, who in their respective response assured them that the matter will be looked into.

The Protesters were against the imposition of an Interim Town Union Executive allegedly carried out by the Chairman of the Local Council, Mrs. Chika Ibekwe, and the Leader of Ngor Okpala Legislative Council, Mr. Chibuike Agbuba.

The community leaders alleged that Mrs. Ibekwe and Mr. Agbuba handpicked individuals without duly consulting stakeholders of the community despite the Commissioner’s intervention and cancellation of the Town Union Election.

The Protesters, through one of their leaders, Chief Theophilus Okere, demanded the suspension of Mr. Abuba, citing his high-handedness, disrespect, and betrayal of trust.

Chief Okere insisted that the community would not deviate from their longstanding tradition as regards producing the President-General.

He said that the selection process is rotational and it is the turn of Emele clan to produce the next President-General, as Eze Obiangwu and the Kweraza have respectively taken their turns.

According to Chief Okere, the protest highlighted the deep-seated divisions within the Obiangwu community and emphasized on the need for urgent intervention to resolve the crisis.

He asserted that the community leaders are determined to protect their tradition and ensure that the Interim Town Union Executive is formed through a fair and transparent process.

‘Class suicidal jobs’ – Nigerian graduates speak amid high unemployment rate

‘Class suicidal jobs’ – Nigerian graduates speak amid high unemployment rate

The level of unemployment in Nigeria has forced certain classes of people to take up jobs that they, ordinarily, would not even contemplate, let alone take. This is what the political scientist would refer to as class suicide.

In those golden eras in Nigeria, white collar jobs were exclusively reserved for the university graduates. There were enough white collar jobs for the university and polytechnic graduates in Nigeria. But today, the story has changed.

According to a 2023 report, Nigeria’s graduate unemployment rate was estimated at eight percent for those with post-secondary education. This simply means that a significant number of graduates are struggling to find employment opportunities.

Another report equally noted that while the overall national unemployment rate is reported as 5.3 percent in the first quarter of 2024, youth unemployment, including those with upper secondary education, remained higher than the national average at 8.5 percent. This situation has led to mass class suicide.

The development also lends credence to Martin Luther King Junior’s importunation that, “If you can’t fly, then run; if you can’t run, then walk. If you can’t walk, then crawl; but whatever you do, you have to keep moving forward.”

Jobs that were meant for school drop-outs or those who never even had any form of formal education, primary or secondary, are now hot cakes for the university and polytechnic graduates.

In the past couple of years in Nigeria, it would be like a taboo for a graduate to take up such jobs as motorcycle riding or cab driving because those were jobs meant for school drop-outs or those who never attended any school at all. Graduates were meant to sit in air-conditioned offices. No graduate worth his or her onions would ever take up such jobs.

Today, the table has turned and such jobs have been overtaken by graduates with second and even third degrees. Apart from ‘Okada or Keke’ riding, many graduates are slugging it out in taxi driving, commercial bus driving, house cleaning and laundry services, generator repairs, restaurant operators, car wash services, estate agency services and petty trading among others.

Idowu Adeniyi, a doctorate degree holder (PhD) is a generator repairer, although he started doing the job after his first degree in philosophy.

Ho got both his master’s and doctorate degrees as a generator repairer. A native of Isale Osi, now Isale Oro in Ibadan South West, Oyo State, Adeniyi shares his experience with DAILY POST.

He said: “I studied philosophy in my first degree from the University of Ibadan in 2007 and my second degree in Sociology from the same university in 2011.”

Currently, he has added the sale of generators to repairs. He has some workers who he said receive between N50, 000 to N60, 000 from him monthly as salaries. He has also grown his business to a point where technical schools now send its students to him for internship.

“I have three employees at the moment and I pay them a salary at the end of the month, although some are still apprentices. I pay them because I need to empower them to be able to take care of their transport and other needs. Students from technical schools used to come for internships here,” he said.

Although he did not reveal his average monthly income for personal reasons, his ability to pay three persons every month, could give a rough estimate of the huge income he rakes in every month.

“I don’t want to disclose what I make in a month for personal reasons but I want to say that I am content with what I make,” he submitted.

Nnaoma Kennedy who hails from Ibeku-Umuafayi in Umuahia North Local Government Area of Abia State works for Mr Adeniyi. He also has a first degree in Sociology from the University of Port Harcourt in 2007 and a second degree in International Relations from the University of Ibadan in 2012.

Recounting his job hunting experience, he said: “I have been applying for jobs but I have not been lucky. Mr Adeniyi was my colleague in Ibadan and that’s how I came to know him. I decided to come and learn this work instead of staying idle at home.”

He admitted that at least, he could now keep body and soul together without much stress unlike when he was seated at home, doing nothing. He, however, urged the government to make the environment conducive for the teeming unemployed graduates to be self-employed like providing soft loans and ensuring steady supply of electricity.

Mr Abel Nnamani graduated from the Enugu State University of Science and Technology, where he studied Business Administration.

He said he joined tricycle riding popularly called ‘Keke’ several months after unsuccessful search for a job.

He said: “I searched for a job endlessly without success before I came to ride this tricycle. I joined this job through one of my friends called Rashidi, when I didn’t have a kobo.

“He gave me one of his tricycles and asked me to deliver N2000 daily to him, while I went home with whatever that remained of my daily earnings. I did that for some time before I saved money to buy my own.”

For Mr Nnamani, the major problem militating against his business is funding.

He revealed that if he could get funds to buy more Keke, he would be okay with the job.

Speaking on what he wants the government to do in the present graduate unemployment predicament, he said: “The only thing the government can do to help us is to make loans available for us to procure more tricycles.

“For instance, if I can get money to buy more keke, like five or 10; I won’t bother myself again looking for any job. I would even let other graduates know that there is hope in riding keke. They can’t continue waiting for the government to provide jobs for them.

“The government should just provide soft loans for us to be able to establish this business properly. There are so many graduates idling around here because they can’t even find any keke to ride.

“The major problem we have in this unit is that we don’t have enough keke. Passengers outnumber the available keke.”

Theodore Uzoamaka, an English graduate from the University of Jos has also carved a niche for herself selling honey.

Upon graduation and with prior knowledge of the unemployment situation in the country, she did not waste much time searching for a job.

Although she felt disappointed initially because her main aim of going back to school to get first degree after her National Certificate in Education (NCE) was to get a good job, she later realised that the business was even more lucrative than any paid employment, so she committed more energy into it.

An Ogun State-born Kemi Adewale is a petty trader. A graduate of Business Administration from the Madonna University, Okija in Anambra State, Kemi decided to establish a small business after several fruitless efforts to get a good job.

“Since after my youth service, I have been applying until I got a job with a stock broking firm in Marina. But in 2008 when the stock market crashed, I lost the job because the firm could not pay us.

Ever since then, I have been applying for job until 2010 when I decided to establish a small business where I sell women products like weave-on, perfume, body cream and things like that for women,” she said.

She also thinks she could remain in the business and forget about searching for a job if she could get a soft loan with low interest rate.

“So far, I thank God but my problem is that the location is not strategic and that has affected my growth in this business. It is not moving as expected; it is discouraging but I still hope that God will help me.

“If the government can provide a soft loan and I change to a better location, I won’t mind settling down permanently for the business. I think it is a good business if one finds a better location and sizable cash to invest in it,” she assured.

A graduate of Mass Communication from the Institute of Management and Technology, Enugu, Emmanuel Abonyi has decided to make ends meet by offering house cleaning and laundry services.

Having graduated since 2004, Emma has done all he could to get a job but he has not been lucky.

Although he has ideas of businesses one could start with little capital like car wash, he cannot do that because he lacks even the little capital to do that.

“There are some jobs you can do with small capital such as car wash but I don’t even have that little capital to start it.

“So right now, I do house cleaning and laundry services as well as other little jobs that come my way to survive. I am still hoping for a better job,” he said.

Osun State-born Rowland Akande studied Accounting from the Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma in Edo State.

After a stint with an Indian company in Victoria Island, Lagos, he resigned in 2001 because the pay wasn’t good enough to sustain him. He later joined estate practice as an agent and ever since then, he has never looked back.

“I have been doing my best and I thank God for that. It is a good job but you have to be patient because you need to learn the job.

“During my learning period, I associated with licensed estate surveyors, lawyers and colleagues who are into estate practice. That was how I got to know the job very well. I have my clients and people have been giving me property to let and sell for them,” he informed.

Despite the challenges inherent in the job, Rowland has made it clear that he would never look for any other job again as he would rather channel all his energy into the estate practice, which he said, was lucrative enough.

Speaking on the challenges and his position on job search, he said: “The major challenge is patience because you need to have a good knowledge.

“Documentation in this job is also very important; you must know all the necessary documents either for sale or for rent, particularly in the area of government property. You must also know how to search for a document to determine whether it is genuine.

“As for job search; well, I am above 40 and I have also reached a stage in this practice that if connections start coming in, it will come with handsome cash.

“I have established myself; I have a large client base and they bring other clients because of the trust, the integrity and the competence they find in me. I wouldn’t want to just leave the job; I prefer to be an estate agent. That is what I use to feed my family; the sky is my limit.

“So, I am not keen about searching for any paid employment any longer. For now, I am a professional estate agent and I am enjoying my job.”

However, the saying that every disappointment is a blessing comes in handy in this circumstance.

Although some graduates set out thinking that they have committed class suicide by taking up jobs considered far beyond their qualifications, many of them have come to realise that only a job in an oil sector or blue chip industries could measure up with what they earn in their new found ‘low jobs.’
