The Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Wednesday said that China will take resolute and strong measures in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s latest 104% tariffs on imports from China.

Lin Jian, the Ministry spokesperson, insisted that the Chinese government will continue to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the people of China.

In response to a media inquiry on the U.S.’ 104% tariffs on Chinese goods taking effect on Wednesday, Jian said:

“We’ll not let anyone take away the Chinese people’s legitimate right to development.
“We’ll not tolerate any attempt to harm China’s sovereignty, security, and development interests.
“We’ll continue to take resolute and strong measures to safeguard our legitimate rights and interests.”

Recall that the White House on Tuesday said Trump’s tariffs on imports from China are set to rise overnight to 104% as Beijing refuses to withdraw its retaliatory tariffs on United States exports.

The Ondo State Youth Network, OSYN, has lashed out at the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice of the state, Kayode Ajulo, over the alleged incarceration of youths from the Akoko axis of the state, among whom is the former Student Union Government, SUG, President of Rufus Giwa Polytechnic, James Akeju.

According to the group, the youths, who are three in number, were remanded in prison custody by a court sitting in Akure, the state capital, on Tuesday, following alleged political victimisation on the part of Ajulo.

While describing the action as a gross abuse of power and a deliberate move to intimidate and silence the voices of youths in the state, OSYN urged Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa to call his aide to order and intervene in the situation.

The group, in a statement issued and signed by its Public Relations Officer, Mr. Christopher Olusa, alleged that the affected youths—Adediran Gabriel, Yaya Bisola, and Akeju Blessing James—were unjustly targeted after a confrontation with the Attorney General on March 28, 2025.

OSYN emphasised that the trio, who are executives of the Akoko Youth Forum, had visited Ajulo in his office but were allegedly met with verbal attacks and demeaning utterances, after which the Attorney General allegedly used security agencies, including the Department of State Services and the police, to harass and detain them without any legal basis.

With the intervention of concerned and eminent citizens of the state, particularly elders from the Akoko region, the matter was initially resolved. But to the surprise of many, the issue took a new twist when the youths were served court summonses containing what the group described as “baseless and defective” charges.

“During Tuesday’s court sitting at a Chief Magistrate’s Court in Akure, all four charges were struck out for lack of jurisdiction, and the application for their remand was declared incompetent. But in a shocking turn, the presiding magistrate ordered their remand pending ruling on April 16.

The youth body described the development as a ‘dangerous descent into tyranny,’ stressing that the remand order, despite the legal flaws, suggested political interference and an attempt to silence critics using the courts. ‘This is not justice. This is persecution. These young people did nothing wrong. They simply stood up against intimidation and are now being punished for it.’”

The group also raised concerns over growing insecurity in the state, warning that such actions by public officials could aggravate an already fragile situation.

“The same state battling herdsmen attacks and rampant kidnappings is now spending its energy locking up innocent youths. If the government cannot accept dissenting opinions, then it has failed the young people who form the backbone of its development.”

Meanwhile, the Technical Adviser to the Commissioner for Justice, Yomi Saint, in a reaction, described the action of the youths as uncultured and immature.

“The faction of the ‘Akoko Youth Forum’ that staged such immature, disgraceful, uncultured, and condemnable conduct at the office of the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr. Kayode Ajulo, should, as a matter of urgency and reasonable reasoning, tender a public apology and seek forgiveness.”

The United States Trade Representative, USTR, has condemned the restriction placed on importation of 25 categories of goods by the Nigerian government.

USTR in a post on its X handle on Monday, claimed that the restrictions have limited market access for exporters in America.

The United States agency said Nigeria’s import ban on beverages, agriculture, pharmaceuticals and other goods created trade barrier.

DAILY POST recalls that the Nigerian government had in 2016 implemented the ban on the 25 agricultural and pharmaceutical items as part of efforts to boost local production.

The former President, Muhammadu Buhari approved the ban on importation of poultry, refined vegetable oil, pork, sugar, spaghetti, cocoa products, beer, and certain medicines to boost homemade products.

Other items banned by the Nigerian Government include, bagged cement, soaps and detergents, rethreaded and used pneumatic tyres, mosquito repellant coils, vouchers and recharge cards.

The Government on March 26, 2025 also announced plans to stop importation of solar panel in a bid to encourage local manufacturing.

The USTR, however, argued that the restrictions have impacted negatively in US exporters by reducing business opportunities, leading to lost revenue.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has decried the attacks in some communities in his state, saying bandits have taken over 64 communities.

The governor disclosed this on Tuesday during an interview on ‘Politics Today’, a programme on Channels Television.

Mutfwang said the communities recently attacked were part of the communities that were attacked in 2023, adding that they survived it and rebuilt themselves.

“The Ruwi community that was first attacked lost about 17 people in 2023 but they bounced back to show you the resilience of the people,” the governor said.

DAILY POST reports that more than fifty persons were killed within a week in attacks over five communities that left over three hundred houses burnt by suspected herdsmen.

The Plateau State Government, through the Secretary to the Government Samuel Jatau, also visited some of the affected communities to ascertain the extent of damages and also donate relief materials to affected victims.

Adu said the Federal Government was determined to find solutions to the incessant attacks and killings.

“The Treasury Department’s daily statement of deposits into and withdrawals from the its general account, the federal government’s main operating account, shows Customs and Certain Excise Taxes deposits have on average totaled around $200 million a day so far this month,” he said.

According to him, for the entire month of February, the latest full month available, the Treasury netted about $7.25 billion in customs duties.

The president added that the monthly budget statement for March will be released on Thursday, which will show the latest monthly figures.
