Poland’s Prime Minister Donald Tusk on Monday said that the country will “calmly endure” despite being hit by a “ricochet”.

Tusk said this in reaction to the global financial markets tumble following US President Donald Trump’s introduction of sweeping import tariffs on several countries.

In a tweet on X, Tusk called for calm and said that Poland’s stability would act in its favour as markets around the world continued to plummet.

“The reaction to the tariff war was predictable. The stock market earthquake from Japan through Europe to America must be survived without nervous decisions,” Tusk said.

“The Polish stock market also got a ricochet, but political and economic stability are our assets in this difficult time. We will calmly persevere!”

Earlier today, the Warsaw Stock Exchange opened with a massive sell-off of shares as investors rushed to withdraw capital from both blue-chip firms and smaller concerns.

In the first minutes of trading, the WSE’s WIG20 index fell by over 7%, with banks taking the heaviest hits.

Former Kaduna State senator, Shehu Sani, has raised concerns over the growing perception of Fulani people as criminals, attributing it to the ongoing banditry crisis in Northern Nigeria.

He warned that the actions of bandits, who are predominantly young Fulani men, have led to widespread suspicion and discrimination against the entire ethnic group.

Speaking at his residence while addressing a group of university students from the region, Sani emphasized the brutality of banditry, describing it as a menace that has devastated key sectors of the northern economy.

“They rape women. They burn down houses. They attack churches, attack mosques, attack commuters, extort money from farmers,” he lamented.

“Farmers have to pay fines and taxes just to go to their farms.”

The former senator highlighted the far-reaching effects of banditry, noting that agriculture, education, and small businesses have suffered greatly.

“Their activities have destroyed agriculture in the northern part of Nigeria. Their activities have destroyed catering. Their activities have destroyed education. Many schools are now closed,” he stated.

Sani called on educated Fulani youth to actively engage with their communities and discourage criminality.

He stressed that years of banditry have only brought suffering to the Fulani people rather than prosperity.

“You have a duty and responsibility as educated Fulanis of which we are two here to reach out to your people and tell them that crime does not pay,” he urged.

“Ten to fifteen years of banditry has not produced one billionaire among the bandits. It has destroyed the lives of Fulani people. It has even destroyed our image and reputation.”

Sani warned that due to the actions of a criminal few, the entire Fulani community is now viewed with suspicion.

“Because of the criminality of these bandits who are mostly Fulani every Fulani man is now being seen as a bandit,” he said.

“Today, someone might look at your face and assume you are a bandit simply because of your ethnic group.”

He pointed out that despite the criminal activities of some, many Fulani professionals have made significant contributions to Nigeria in various fields.

“There are Fulani doctors, engineers, architects, professors, and businessmen whose image is being unfairly tainted,” he said. “How does that help us?”

Concluding his address, Sani charged the students with the responsibility of changing the narrative and restoring peace to the region.

The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Monday held a call with metals industry representatives and will speak to the automobile sector later to discuss how to respond to US tariffs.

DAILY POST reports that the calls aimed to collect more data to strategise further trade counter-measures beyond Brussels’ upcoming response to Washington’s previously announced steel duties, which will be voted on later this week.

A third call with the European pharmaceuticals industry is planned for Tuesday.

Asian equity markets were said to have sunk, European shares crashed to a 16-month low and oil prices plummeted on Monday as investors feared the duties Trump announced last week could lead to higher prices, weaker demand and potentially lead to a global recession.

According to the EU Commission boss’ letter, the EU would later this year propose a trade measure replacing the steel safeguards as of 1 July 2026, providing a highly effective level of protection against negative trade-related effects caused by global over-capacities.

“The views from the sector will be key in further elaborating our common response to the US tariffs,” she said.

According to the European Automobile Manufacturers Association, ACEA, the industry group in Brussels, the call with the European auto industry was scheduled for 3:30 p.m. (1330 GMT).

A spokesperson for ACEA said that the Commission wanted to gather industry analysis on the possible impact of US tariffs on the EU automotive sector and to explore proposals for the most effective EU response.

The European Commission, late last week, initially invited the chief executives of EU-headquartered big pharma companies for a meeting.

US President Donald Trump’s billionaire adviser, Elon Musk has shared a video posted by another user extolling the benefits of free markets and complex supply chains.

In the video shared by Musk on his X account on Monday, US economist Milton Friedman used the example of a pencil to explain how different stages in different parts of the world contributed to its creation.

“Literally thousands of people cooperated to make this pencil,” Friedman, who died almost two decades ago, said.

It’s the “magic of the price system”, he added, noting that that is why the operation of the free market is so essential.

“Not only to promote productive efficiency, but even more, to foster harmony and peace, among the peoples of the world,” Friedman said.

This is coming two days after Musk suggested that the US and Europe could develop their economic relationship toward eliminating the need for tariffs.

The Tesla CEO disclosed that he had advised Trump to bolster the relationship with European countries.

“At the end of the day, I hope it’s agreed that both Europe and the United States should move ideally, in my view, to a zero-tariff situation—effectively creating a free trade zone between Europe and North America,” Musk said.

Trump had last week imposed sweeping tariffs against nearly every major country in the world.

However, world leaders have promised to retaliate against the tariffs.
