Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, has described the late ex-governor of Old Oyo State, Dr Omololu Olunloyo, as a beacon of responsible leadership.

Adeleke noted that Olunloyo’s passing represented a huge loss to the nation.

In a condolence statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed, Adeleke said Olunloyo’s demise would be sorely felt beyond the borders of Oyo State.

“The deceased was a beacon of responsible leadership whose absence will be sorely felt beyond Oyo State,” the governor was quoted as saying.

Adeleke extended heartfelt condolences to the Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, the Olunloyo family, and the people of the state, expressing deep pain at the elder statesman’s demise.

He recalled a visit to the late Olunloyo last year, describing it as an opportunity to benefit from his wisdom and assess the performance of his own administration.

“I recount how a visit to the deceased octogenarian last year afforded me a rare opportunity to draw from his wise counsel and also a review of my administration’s performance, which the late governor rated high,” Adeleke said.

The Osun State governor noted that despite Olunloyo’s brief tenure as governor of the old Oyo State, he made a lasting impact on governance and leadership.

He assured that the people of Osun stood in solidarity with Oyo during this period of mourning.

“Baba Omololu Olunloyo embodied selfless leadership, making a mark in the test of time. Even though his time as Governor in the old Oyo state was short-lived, he left a memory of impactful governance.

“On behalf of the good people of Osun State, I convey my heartfelt condolences to my Governor-brother, His Excellency Governor Oluseyi Makinde, for this huge loss,” Adeleke stated.

The Osun governor urged Nigerians to draw inspiration from Olunloyo’s life and strive to uphold his legacy of service, wisdom and dedication.

“As much as his passing represents a huge loss, I ask that we should be consoled by the life of impacts that defined Baba Olunloyo and to also work to preserve his good legacy,” he said.

Dr Omololu Olunloyo, who died on Sunday morning at the age of 89, would have marked his 90th birthday on April 14, 2025.

On Saturday, the Financial Times reported that Taiwan security chief Joseph Wu and his entourage flew to Washington for talks with the Trump administration.

Their trip comes as Beijing ramps up military drills around the self-governing island it views as a breakaway province.

“China firmly opposes any form of official interactions between the U.S. and Taiwan,” spokesperson for China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Lin Jian, said at a briefing in Beijing.

Although the US has no official relations with Taiwan, it is the island democracy’s most important international backer.

This means America is bound by law to provide Taiwan with defensive weapons in the face of threats from Beijing, which has not ruled out the use of force to achieve its unification goal.

Lin has however said that Taiwan President Lai Ching-te, whom Beijing considers a “separatist” and “troublemaker,” will not succeed in seeking “independence” by relying on the US and urged Trump’s administration to refrain from creating new tensions in the Taiwan Strait.

DAILY POST reports that since Wednesday, an additional 18 storm-related deaths had been reported in Tennessee, Missouri, Kentucky, Indiana, Arkansas and Mississippi.

At least 10 people died in Tennessee, where a powerful tornado devastated the city of Selmer.

Also by Sunday, approximately 90 tornadoes had been recorded across the nation and heavy rainfall caused rivers to overflow, resulting in widespread flooding.

The National Weather Service issued warnings for life-threatening flood conditions.

The governor of Kentucky, Andy Beshear, declared a state of emergency, especially in areas like Covington, where streets were submerged due to the Ohio and Licking rivers, as the situation worsened.

Similarly, in Frankfort, the Kentucky River reached nearly 15 meters, approaching a near-record level. Around 80,000 households in the affected states were left without power.

Reacting, Badenoch revealed she was “not surprised” both MPs were detained and deported, adding that all countries should be able to control their borders.

However, Thornberry insisted that both Mohamed and Yang are highly respected parliamentarians, and that Israel “really needs to start making friends as opposed to alienating people in this way”.

Thornberry told the BBC’s Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg programme: “In my view, Israel really needs to start making friends as opposed to alienating people in this way. I think that it is an insult to Britain and I think it is an insult to Parliament.

“These are two women who are potential leaders, people listen to what they say. They’re highly respected parliamentarians and Israel is badly advised to try to alienate them, to humiliate them and to treat them in this way.

“I’m outraged, and I can’t believe that the leader of the opposition [Kemi Badenoch] would simply take on the face of it what it is that the Israelis say.”

The Benue State Government has boosted school infrastructure with at least 374 school projects and educational supplies to enhance learning in public schools.

The projects and supplies according to the data obtained from the Benue State Universal Education Board (SUBEB) include classroom renovations, construction of hostels, perimeter fencing, borehole installations, and large-scale furniture distribution and other school needs.

According to the data which focused mainly on last year’s intervention, 52 schools are undergoing classroom rehabilitation with 75 percent completion stage, while 73 others have been equipped with chairs, desks, and tables to enhance teaching and learning.

Speaking on the development in a telephone interview with our correspondent, the Executive Chairman of the State Universal Basic Education Board (SUBEB), Dr. Grace Adagba, said the projects and supplies which included classroom rehabilitation, hostel construction, perimeter fencing, borehole installations, and furniture supply, among other interventions were aimed at improving learning conditions in public schools.

“We are doing our best in line with the vision of Governor Hyacinth Alia to improve the standard of public school’s’ infrastructure in the state. At the moment, 52 schools are currently undergoing classroom rehabilitation, while 73 others benefited from educational supplies.

“Additionally, 13 schools are benefiting from the construction of storey buildings, ECCDE playrooms and libraries with work already at advanced stage,” she said.

The Executive Chairman said government was constructing perimeter fences and gatehouses in six schools to improve security in the schools, this is even as she said renovations of fences and gatehouses in two schools have reached 85 percent completion.

To address water scarcity in schools, Dr. Adagba said boreholes, steel overhead stands, and 2,000-liter PVC tanks were being installed in 13 schools across the state.

On furniture supply, the SUBEB chairman revealed that 2-seater dual desks were being distributed to 73 schools, adding that teachers’ tables and chairs are being provided to 70 schools across the state.

“To promote a reading culture, our library facilities are being improved with the installation of digital and non-digital library furniture in 13 and 26 schools, respectively. Additionally, steel library bookshelves are being supplied in 12 schools.

“With these interventions, Governor Hyacinth Alia has demonstrated a clear commitment to transforming the education sector in Benue and I want to urge stakeholders to continue to support the government to ensure the full implementation of these projects for the benefit of the Benue child,” she appealed.

The Kremlin said on Monday that President Vladimir Putin still supports the idea of a ceasefire in Ukraine, stating that Russia has not yet been given answers to key questions it has about a truce proposed by US President Donald Trump.

Trump, who said he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has repeatedly said he wants the three-year conflict in Ukraine to end and has warned of the risks of it escalating into a world war between the United States and Russia.

Last month, Putin said that Russia supported a US proposal for a ceasefire in Ukraine in principle, but that fighting could not be paused until a number of crucial conditions were worked out or clarified.

According to the Kremlin, those questions had not yet been answered.

“President Putin does support the idea of the need for a ceasefire, but before that a number of questions must be answered. These questions are still hanging in the air; so far no one has given an answer to them,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said.

Putin has said that any peace agreement must address what Moscow sees as the root causes of the conflict: essentially a tug of war between Russia and the West over Ukraine’s future and the post-Soviet enlargement of NATO towards Russia’s borders.

He also said the ceasefire would have to ensure that Ukraine did not simply use it to regroup, and that key questions about verification of a truce would need to be clarified.

The Kremlin on Monday, however, laid the blame for the lack of answers on Kyiv which it said was unable to control a number of its extremist and nationalist units.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has said in turn that Putin’s conditions for a ceasefire are unrealistic and has accused the Russian leader of wanting to continue the war.

Abiodun spoke at the 38th Lisabi celebration, held on Saturday at Ake Palace in Abeokuta, stressing that the festival promotes unity and strengthens cultural identity.

The governor stated that the festival themed ‘Back to Land: Panacea for Food Sustainability and Youth Empowerment in Egbaland’, aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope agenda on economic revitalisation through agriculture.

While reaffirming his administration’s commitment to investing in agriculture to empower young people and foster growth in rural areas, Abiodun pledged to rehabilitate rural roads, in order to ease transportation of farm produce across the state.

Nonetheless, the governor also promised to repair all of the state’s cultural heritage monuments, noting that the tourism industry is a significant avenue to enhance the revenue generation.

Alake said, “Seeing people in different costumes shows unity, strength in culture, education, and pride in many good things.

“I welcome innovation. I want fresh ideas that will inspire imagination in our people.”
