Nigeria and the U.S. have expressed commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation between them through various economic sectors.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Yusuf Tuggar, disclosed this in a statement by Alkasim Abdulkadir, his Special Assistant on Media and Communications Strategy, on Monday in Abuja.

Tuggar disclosed that the commitment is the outcome of an inaugural virtual meeting with the U.S. Deputy-Secretary of State, Christopher Landau, to discuss areas of mutual interest between Nigeria and the U.S.

“We highlighted key areas of cooperation, including energy, technology, trade, human capital development, security, religious freedom and immigration.

“Nigeria is ready to partner with the new Trump administration to foster shared goals and enhance bilateral relations,” he stated.

On Nigeria’s commitment to structured migration solutions, Tuggar pointed to initiatives such as the Technical Aide Corps, TAC, which deploys Nigerian professionals to other nations to support development efforts.

He reiterated that such programmes provide a more organised approach to migration while benefiting both Nigeria and its international partners.

Meanwhile, Landau stated the US’ commitment to a strong and enduring partnership with Nigeria through strengthening commercial ties, enhancing security collaboration and deepening diplomatic engagements.

The meeting, which marked the first high-level engagement between Nigeria and the US under the new American administration, set the stage for continued cooperation on critical global and regional issues.

He emphasised the significance of perceiving technology as a neutral instrument that can accelerate Nigeria’s socio-economic advancement.

Speaking during a virtual panel session titled “Culture and Innovation: The Changing Landscape and Technoculture,” Inuwa outlined the importance of leveraging technology to balance cultural preservation with economic growth.

The event, organised by the Federal Ministry of Arts, Culture, and the Creative Economy in partnership with the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, NESG, and UNESCO, provided a platform for stakeholders to explore the dynamic role of technology in shaping cultural and economic transformations.

Inuwa, who was represented by the Acting Director, Regulation and Compliance, Barrister Emmanuel Edet, stressed that technology is inherently neutral—it is neither beneficial nor harmful in isolation but depends on the intent and strategy behind its usage.

He advocated implementing robust policies and fostering collaborations to ensure technological innovations align with Nigeria’s cultural heritage and developmental goals.

As global cultures and economies are increasingly influenced by digital innovation, Inuwa pointed to creative tools such as Figma, Canva, and CorelDRAW, which incorporate Artificial Intelligence, AI, to enhance user experiences.

He underlined the need to equip Nigerians with digital skills to utilise these tools effectively for economic progress.

Inuwa further stated, “Technology is a tool—it all depends on how we use it.

“Our objective is to create an environment that allows technology to contribute to Nigeria’s economic and creative development.”

The Minister of Youth, Ayodele Olawande, has announced the establishment of a Youth Academy to enable young people acquire skills and be more useful to society.

According to him, more than mandating the youths to the compulsory one year national service under the National Youth Service Corps, NYSC, the government is now looking at creating impact and making them viable for the job market.

The minister made the announcement during the 2025 annual management conference themed transforming the NYSC Scheme to meet the yearnings of the contemporary Nigerian graduates and society held in Abuja on Monday.

He said that President Bola Tinubu, “Will launch and inaugurate the Nigerian Youth Academy that is free. That is our own Nigerian Coursera. It is open. You don’t need to know me before you go for any of this initiative.

“We have a dashboard already and we are going to make it open.

“The camp is going to be everywhere, and I’m very sure the Akwa Ibom people will make it open by the end of this month, and everywhere that we want to make it very open for the young people that the ministry belongs to us.

“Let us have a record of commendation, achievement in the areas of mentorship, education, act, agriculture, community development, not building a status of corps members in the community and say that’s community development.

“Now let us focus on youth empowerment, entrepreneurship, acquisitions, and skills. Let us bring back our skills.”

The Minister further explained that hot lines have been made available through the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, for corps members to call for protection in case of emergency.

“We have NCC lines and all that that you can reach for your protection,” he said.

He also advised corps members to reach out to the ministry if they have issues with NYSC, adding, “We want to be the intermediary.”

He said that the government must find a way to proffer a solution and to address unemployment, mental health, and the re-engineering of young people not to follow trends but to do research.

The retreat, which commenced Monday in the Nigerian capital, is being organized in collaboration with the Administrative Staff College of Nigeria, ASCON.

According to government sources, the program is aimed at bridging the communication and coordination gap between political office holders and government functionaries, with a focus on enhancing effective service delivery.

However, Umar took to Facebook to express strong reservations about the retreat’s location and purpose, questioning the rationale behind hosting the event in Abuja rather than within Nasarawa State.

“A significant concern arises regarding the decision to hold the workshop in Abuja and not in Lafia or any other city in the state.

“Given the current strain on the public treasury from corruption, this could be viewed as an inappropriate allocation of resources.” Umar stated.

He argued that the event would have had more economic and social impact if held in Lafia, the state capital, or any other local city, where it could stimulate local businesses and promote grassroots engagement.

“For goodness’ sake, what is ‘Bridge the Gap between political office holders and government functionaries in the State?’” Umar queried, criticizing the theme of the retreat as vague and lacking direct relevance to the pressing needs of citizens.

He further accused the Governor Abdullahi Sule-led administration of prioritizing “financial gain and extravagant expenditures” over citizens’ welfare, adding that such lavish retreats do little to address the state’s growing challenges, including youth unemployment, food insecurity, and economic hardship.

“This workshop represents a considerable misallocation of scarce resources, especially in light of the state’s challenges,” he added.

“The state government must reconsider its resource management strategies to better meet the needs of its citizens and foster sustainable development.”

He emphasised efforts to deepen relations through trade, sustainable development, gender equality, and cultural exchange.

Tuggar made this statement during the official visit of Her Royal Highness Victoria, Crown Princess of Sweden, to the ministry on Monday in Abuja.

He noted that the visit was part of ongoing high-level dialogues to enhance collaboration between the two countries, highlighting several key areas for cooperation, including trade, investment, infrastructure, agriculture, peacekeeping, and reciprocal support agreements.

He also mentioned that there had been previous visits, including one by the Vice President, Kashim Shetima, to Sweden in October.

Victoria expressed her appreciation for the warm reception and reiterated that the dialogue, which began in Sweden in 2024, would continue to strengthen ties between the two nations.

She emphasised the potential for growth in their relationship in multiple sectors.

Andreas Carisson, Sweden’s Minister for Infrastructure and Housing, reflected on the successful diplomatic relations between Sweden and Nigeria, noting that they would celebrate 65 years of bilateral relations next year.

He also spoke of opportunities in infrastructure and Information and Communication Technology, ICT, with Swedish companies, including Ericsson, investing in Nigeria.

The high point of the royal visit included a meeting with Vice President Kashim Shettima, the Governor of Lagos, and the inauguration of the Swedish Trade Office in Lagos.
