European Union Trade Commissioner, Maroš Šefčovič, has described Monday as a ‘black day for markets’ with biggest ‘paradigm shift’ since World War II.

Šefčovič said he sees Monday’s market reactions as “a kind of black day for the markets … all over the world.”

According to the Commissioner, ministers, at the meeting of European leaders, described today “as the most important paradigm shift in global trading patterns since the second world war.”

This is all in reaction to the recent ‘reciprocal tariffs’ imposed on countries across the globe, including US allies, by President Donald Trump.

Šefčovič said it “This introduces a lot of uncertainty, lack of predictability, inflation fears and the fact that tariffs are, in the end, the taxes which will be paid by the businesses, but especially by the final consumers.”

He added that the tariffs prompted fears among consumers about spending, inflation, jobs, and future prospects.

“So these are the I would say the debates which are now taking place, I would say all across the world … and I’m not even going to tell you [about] the distressed phone calls we are getting from emerging economies and from the developing countries,” he says.

He repeated that the EU will be “careful” and respond in a “measured and well calibrated way.

“We know what kind of impact this might have on the real economy and on the people, and therefore you see that we are really progressing step by step in this regard.

“But I wouldn’t dare to speculate if it would have an impact on decision making across the Atlantic.”

“Disregard any fake news making the rounds about the replacement of the INEC Chairman,” he said in a brief statement.

The Sokoto State Government has issued a stern warning to residents against making inflammatory and misleading statements that could undermine its ongoing fight against insecurity.

This caution was delivered by Colonel Ahmed Usman (Rtd), the Special Adviser on Security to Governor Ahmed Aliyu, in a statement released Monday.

The warning was in response to comments attributed to Basharu Altine Guyawa, who allegedly implied that the state government has not fulfilled its security responsibilities.

According to Col. Usman, “This type of comment can discourage people from appreciating what the government and security operatives have been doing to end insecurity in the state.”

He further emphasized, “As the Governor always says, the issue of security is a collective one. The government alone cannot provide security without the contribution and support of the citizenry.”

Urging for unity and responsibility, he added: “Therefore, our people should avoid sensationalizing and politicizing insecurity. Rather, they should support the government in its effort to find lasting solutions to our security challenges.”

Col. Usman made it clear that the administration would not tolerate any disruptions: “The government will not condone any attempt by any individual or group to frustrate its efforts or distract it in this regard.”

Detailing the state’s recent anti-banditry operations, he revealed: “The state government, in collaboration with security agencies, has been working assiduously to restore peace, particularly in the eastern part of the state which has been facing security challenges.”

He pointed out that a recent joint operation “recorded tremendous success as many identified bandits’ hideouts were destroyed and several bandits killed in the process. Additionally, tens of kidnap victims were also rescued during the operation.”

On resource support, the statement said, “The government has also maintained unending financial and logistics support to security agencies in the state. It even restored their monthly allowances which was hitherto stopped by the immediate past administration.”

The adviser highlighted Governor Aliyu’s contributions: “The Gov Ahmed Aliyu-led government has so far donated hundreds of patrol vehicles and motorcycles to our security agencies since inception.”

“Other measures taken to fight insecurity in the state include creating platforms where security operatives, community leaders, and other relevant stakeholders meet regularly and share ideas on how best to tackle our security challenges. Alhamdulillah, the impact of their meeting is manifesting in our community because there is a drastic reduction in attacks in the state.”

In a twist of irony, Col. Usman recalled that Guyawa, the same critic had once praised the governor’s security efforts.

“Ironically, Guyawa, who is the convener of the Movement for Social Justice in Nigeria, has in February conferred an award of excellence on His Excellency, Gov Ahmed Aliyu, in recognition of his government’s dedication to the maintenance of peace and security in the state.”

“During the presentation of the award at the government house, Sokoto, Guyawa admitted that the state government had provided all the necessary intervention, which is yielding positive results in the fight against insurgency,” the statement concluded.

The European Union has said it is in ‘early stages’ of talks with the United States of America on issues regarding the new tariffs.

It added, however, that it is finalising list of countermeasures after steel and aluminium tariffs.

Maroš Šefčovič, European Commissioner for Trade and Economic Security; Interinstitutional Relations and Transparency, said the Union’s “in early stages of discussions” with the US but added that it is complicated “because the US view tariffs not as a tactical step, but as a corrective measure.”

He said “ while the EU remains open to and strongly prefers negotiations, we will not weigh endlessly until we see tangible progress.”

He said the EU has prepared a “robust list of countermeasures” on steel and aluminium after receiving feedback from over 600 stakeholders.

“After carefully reviewing all of it, we have worked to table a robust list of countermeasures, while balancing the burden across all member states, we will be sending the final list and tariff levels to them later today,” he told reporters on Monday, according to the Guardian.

“The vote is set for 9 April, with the final list adopted on 15 April, and then duties on products will kick in on that day for the first set of measures, and on 15 May for the remaining ones.”

DAILY POST reported that the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on Monday held a call with metals industry representatives and will speak to the automobile sector later to discuss how to respond to US tariffs.

The calls are aimed at collecting more data to strategise on further counter-measures beyond Brussels’ upcoming response to Washington’s previously announced steel duties, which will be voted on later this week.

A third call with the European pharmaceuticals industry is planned for Tuesday.

The human rights group condemned the attacks on demonstrators under the Take It Back Movement in these cities.

Reports indicate that protesters, who have been actively demonstrating in Abuja, Lagos, and other major Nigerian cities, are challenging the “authoritarianism” of President Bola Tinubu’s administration, as well as the alleged misuse of the Cybercrime Act.

The police had previously warned the organizers against going forward with the protest, citing it as poorly timed and mischievous due to the coinciding National Police Day celebrations.

Despite the warnings, the protest continued, with demonstrators marching on the streets of the capital and other regions.

In Port Harcourt, the police used tear gas to disperse the protesters at Isaac Boro Park. Amnesty International, reacting to the incidents, stated:

Kebbi State Governor, Dr. Nasir Idris, has pledged a N50 million donation to support the families of vigilantes killed and those injured in the Sunday attack by suspected Lakurawa bandits.

The governor made the announcement on Monday during a condolence visit to Yola District in Augie Local Government Area, where he expressed heartfelt sympathy to the families of the victims.

He described the financial assistance as a modest gesture by the state government aimed at offering support to the bereaved and those affected by the attack.

The Governor emphasized, however, that it should not be viewed as compensation for the tragic loss of lives.

Governor Idris, visibly moved by the incident, strongly condemned the repeated attacks, pointing to the failure of neighboring states to secure their borders effectively.

He stated that the bandits often infiltrate Kebbi from other states, carrying out their attacks before retreating to safer grounds, taking advantage of the inadequate security measures in those regions.

“We have been doing our best, unlike our neighbors,” the governor remarked in a statement signed by his Special adviser in media and publicity, Yahaya Sarki.

“These bandits exploit the lack of proactive security strategies in neighboring states, entering Kebbi to carry out atrocities and fleeing without consequence.”

Governor Idris also urged residents and vigilantes to avoid engaging the bandits directly, advising them to leave such operations to the security agencies in order to prevent further casualties.

He reiterated his administration’s commitment to ensuring the safety of all citizens and assured that every necessary resource would be deployed for this cause.

“We will continue to work tirelessly until peace is restored across every corner of Kebbi,” he assured the people.

The governor further condemned individuals suspected of collaborating with the bandits by serving as informants, labeling their actions as destructive and unpatriotic.

In his remarks, the Emir of Argungu, Alhaji Samaila Mohammed Mera, praised the governor for his visit and the timely financial assistance.

He described the gesture as a vital support for the affected families and commended the state government for its continued efforts to address the region’s security challenges.

The attack on Sunday saw suspected Lakurawa bandits launch coordinated raids on several villages, including Garu, Murai, Unguwar Ladan, Unguwar Mai Rakumi, Unguwar Mai Turu, and Binnani.

During the assault, the bandits rustled cattle and ambushed a group of vigilantes who were in pursuit, resulting in the deaths of about 16 vigilantes.
