A major fire outbreak razed the Borno State Mechanical Workshop, operated by the Borno Express Transport Corporation, destroying more than ten 18-seater buses worth millions of naira.
Eyewitnesses said the blaze, which erupted around noon, was triggered by a loud explosion believed to be caused by a gas leak within the premises.
“It was a deafening blast that sent staff and commuters in the area fleeing for safety,” one of the witnesses told reporters. “The fire spread quickly, but the prompt arrival of fire service personnel prevented it from engulfing the entire facility.”
Although no lives were lost, one firefighter sustained injuries while battling the flames.
Staff at the workshop disclosed that the affected vehicles were mostly buses undergoing routine servicing, with a few in for major repairs. The mechanical workshop is central to the upkeep of the state’s mass transit fleet.
Borno State Commissioner for Transport and Energy, Aliyu Buba Bamanga, who visited the scene shortly after the incident, declined to comment. “We are expecting His Excellency, Governor Babagana Umara Zulum, shortly. I wouldn’t want to preempt any official statement from him,” he said.
The incident comes just a day after a separate fire outbreak razed four communities in Alau, claiming two lives and destroying thousands of thatched homes and property.

Lakurawa attack: We’ll end banditry, violent crimes in Kebbi – Police
The Kebbi State Police Command has vowed to put an end to banditry and violent crimes across the state.
This is following a deadly attack by suspected members of the notorious Lakurawa group in Augie Local Government Area, with 16 villagers killed.
In a statement on Monday, the Kebbi State Police Command confirmed that it had deployed tactical teams to hunt the terrorists.
According to the Police Public Relations Officer, CSP Nafiu Abubakar, the attack occurred on Saturday, April 6, 2025, at about 6 pm, when heavily armed assailants stormed two villages.
“The attackers, who arrived in large numbers, rustled an unspecified number of cattle and engaged in a deadly confrontation with community members, which led to the tragic loss of sixteen lives,” the statement read.
Condemning the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Bello Sani, assured that justice would be swift and decisive.
He announced the immediate deployment of additional tactical teams made up of the police, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, and local vigilantes to the troubled areas.
“Our resolve to rid Kebbi State of banditry and other violent crimes remains firm. We are deploying all available resources to ensure that the perpetrators of this senseless act are brought to justice,” CP Sani stated.
CSP Abubakar added that normalcy has since been restored to the affected communities and that a thorough investigation is underway.
The Command further called on residents to remain calm and continue cooperating with security agencies, while reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property across Kebbi State.

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has ordered the release of N3.8 billion to the state Pension Bureau for immediate payment of gratuities, death benefits and accrued rights in the Contributory Pension Scheme.
In a statement issued by the Governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Ibraheem Musa, the Governor gave the order on compassionate grounds, after considering the passionate pleas of the pensioners and families of deceased civil servants, who complained that the ongoing verification exercise had impacted negatively on their living conditions.
Sani restated the fact that the verification exercise was aimed at weeding out “ghost” pensioners from the payroll in order to curtail the frittering away of the State’s meagre resources, and ordered the Pension Bureau to immediately commence the payment of pensioners.
The Governor assured pensioners of his unwavering commitment to their welfare, saying, “it is in furtherance of this commitment, that l determined to clean up the payroll to ensure seamless and uninterrupted payment of monthly pensions.”
The Governor noted that the senior citizens devoted their lives to the service of the state and must be given all the needed support to make them happy in retirement, while assuring the speedy completion of the verification exercise so that the state pensioners will enjoy uninterrupted payment.
He thanked the pensioners for their patience, understanding and continued support to his administration, saying that since assuming office in May 2023, he has paid gratuities, death benefits and accrued rights to the tune of N6.6 billion.

The Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) seized petroleum products worth N195,719,930 in the past four months in Adamawa and Taraba states.
Speaking at a press briefing in Yola, Comptroller Garba Bashir, who heads the command, disclosed that the illegal fuel trade is worsening Nigeria’s economic challenges and depriving citizens of essential resources.
“These smuggling rings are not only disrupting domestic supply but are also undermining the energy sector reforms initiated by President Tinubu’s administration,” Bashir stated.
He explained that smugglers were using unofficial border routes and waterways to divert fuel meant for local consumption, warning that the Customs Service would not relent in its efforts to combat the illicit trade.
“Our command is deploying advanced tools and intelligence-gathering techniques to identify and dismantle these smuggling operations. Smugglers will find no refuge in our jurisdiction,” he declared.
The operation led to the confiscation of several tankers, trailers, and other vehicles used in transporting petroleum products illegally. In addition to fuel seizures, the command also intercepted contraband items such as elephant ivory and alcoholic beverages, further highlighting the scale of illicit trade in the region.
Bashir confirmed that suspects linked to the fuel smuggling activities have been arrested and are currently facing trial at the Federal High Court in Yola.
He urged Nigerians to support Customs’ anti-smuggling drive, emphasizing that the fight against economic sabotage requires collective effort and public cooperation.

Senator Ali Ndume, representing Borno South under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has warned that President Bola Tinubu’s political appointments, which he claims violate the federal character principle, could have long-term consequences if not addressed.
Speaking on Monday during an interview on Arise TV, Ndume stated that while the president has the prerogative to appoint individuals to key positions, those appointments must reflect national diversity, as mandated by the Nigerian Constitution.
“The Constitution is very clear when you look at it vis-à-vis the appointments made so far. These are political appointments, and Section 143 clearly states that political appointments should reflect the federal character. That is not the case here,” he said.
Ndume explained that while professional appointments, such as those of the Chief of Army Staff or the Inspector General of Police, require specific expertise, political appointments should be more inclusive to promote national unity.
“You can’t appoint someone who is not a soldier as Chief of Army Staff or someone who is not a police officer as the IGP. But for political appointments, the Constitution insists on fairness, and that’s being violated,” he added.
The senator warned that if Tinubu does not address the imbalance, it could have political repercussions for his administration.
“These things can boomerang at a certain period of time if they are not corrected,” Ndume cautioned.
“All I’m doing is drawing the president’s attention to these infractions.”
He dismissed claims that his criticism was driven by personal interest, insisting that his role as a lawmaker requires him to speak against irregularities.
“As a Nigerian, I have the right to voice this out. In fact, that’s why I’m in the National Assembly to provide oversight on the president’s actions. This is not personal,” he said.
Ndume also noted that rather than addressing the substance of his concerns, some individuals within the administration were more focused on attacking him.
“Tinubu’s attack dogs will attack me and not the message,” he remarked.
The senator emphasized that public office holders must be accountable, not only to Nigerians but also to God.
“At the end of it all, each one of us will stand before God and account for what we were responsible for. That’s why I’m saying this,” he concluded.
