President Donald Trump of the United States will on Saturday hold “direct talks” with Iran over a nuclear deal.

Trump, who warned that Iran can’t own nuclear weapons, stressed that it would be very bad for Tehran if the proposed talks end in a deadlock.

Trump – who unilaterally pulled the US out of a previous deal with Iran during his first presidency – said discussions would be at a “very high level”.

He warned it would be a “very bad day for Iran” if no agreement was reached.

Last month, the US President raised the prospect of military action against Iran after its supreme leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei publicly rejected the offer of direct talks.

Speaking at the White House, Trump said: “We have a very big meeting on Saturday with Iran, and we’re dealing with them directly. And maybe a deal is going to be made, that would be great.”

The US President disclosed that Iran would be in “great danger” if the talks end in a deadlock.

He said: “Iran cannot have a nuclear weapon, and if the talks aren’t successful, I actually think it’ll be a very bad day for Iran.”

Confirming the proposed meeting, Iran’s Foreign Minister, Abbas Araqchi said the talks could be “as much an opportunity as a test”.

Araqchi said US and Iran would meet in Oman on 12 April.

Araqchi wrote on X: “It is as much an opportunity as it is a test. The ball is in America’s court.”

The Osun State Government has relaxed the curfew imposed on Erin-Osun, Ifon and Ilobu communities from 17 to 12 hours.

The directive by Governor Ademola Adeleke was contained in a statement by Kolapo Alimi, the Osun State Commissioner for Information and Public Enlightenment, on Tuesday.

Governor Adeleke stated that the directive is based on the gradual return to peace in the three warring communities in Irepodun and Ifon-Orolu local governments.

The governor also explained that the relaxation of the curfew follows various security reports indicating that the much-anticipated ceasefire is becoming more prominent on a daily basis.

The statement read: “Accordingly, the Governor has directed that the curfew should, beginning from today, Tuesday (08/4/25), commence from 7pm to 7am daily until further notice.

“Now that peace is gaining centre stage on a daily basis, it gladdens my heart, as the Governor and Chief Security Officer of Osun State, to announce the relaxation of the curfew earlier imposed on Ifon-Ilobu-Erin Osun communities from 17 hours to 12 hours daily, with effect from today.

“As a Governor, I am again reaffirming my commitment to do everything morally and officially possible at my executive disposal to bring the communal fracas in the three communities to an amicable end.

“So far, I am equally happy to say that the traditional rulers of the three communities and their subjects have been living up to the desired expectations in ensuring a gradual return to peace. This is good and heartwarming. I urge them to keep the tempo high in this regard.

“In the same vein, the new trend in the time frame of the curfew will also allow our children, who wish to write WAEC, NECO, and JAMB examinations, to do so without any form of hindrance, as we cannot allow their future to be mortgaged.

“However, I am still directing that the joint security team, comprising the Nigerian Army, Nigerian Police, and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, should continue to maintain their usual 24-hour surveillance to ensure zero tolerance for any act of lawlessness.

“This is not without reiterating the need for all stakeholders to cooperate by embracing the much-sought peace in the three communities, as anyone, group or community caught or found wanting in fomenting or aiding the crisis in any way will be made to face the music in line with the dictates of Nigerian law.

“I am seizing this opportunity to, once again, remind and direct the 100-member crisis resolution committee on Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun communal mayhem, set up by this administration in the wake of the crisis a few months ago, to expedite their assignments in order to find a lasting solution to the problem. My administration and the entire people of Osun State will not settle for less from your committee in providing us with a pathway towards ensuring a lasting resolution to the age-old communal disputes.

“I urge all sons and daughters of the three communities, both at home and in the diaspora, to cooperate with me and my administration to bring this crisis to an end once and for all.

“It is only in an atmosphere of peace and unity that the much-sought growth and development can be achieved in the three communities of Ifon, Ilobu, and Erin Osun, as well as the entire state.”

As violence escalated between the three communities in the middle of March, the state government imposed a dusk-to-dawn curfew in Ilobu and Ifon communities.

The government also extended the curfew to 24 hours and expanded it to the Erin-Osun community.

The curfew was later relaxed to 17 hours before the Eid-el-Fitr celebrations.

The Imo State House of Assembly has called on the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, to direct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, and other relevant agencies to come to the aid of residents of communities in Orsu LGA of the state, who returned home after a long period of living in exile following the outbreak of insecurity since 2020.

The House made the call while adopting the motion moved by the member representing Orsu state constituency, Uche Francis Agabige.

Presenting the motion, the lawmaker explained: “The insecurity in Orsu snowballed into something else, and even extended to the neighbouring Oru East and other environs. If not for the governor, there wouldn’t have been anything like Orsu again. The breakdown of law and order led to the loss of lives and properties, desertification of security formations, and displacement of indigenous people.”

Agabige informed that presently, the Nigeria Police was able to restore police stations across the LGA, with its personnel in full control of security operations in the area, which he said was a sign that normalcy had returned.

The lawmaker urged his colleagues to lend their voices in supporting the motion, especially the urgent appeal for humanitarian assistance to the returnees, who he said had lost their belongings and means of livelihood due to the ugly development.

“We are like people who have recovered from war, so we need total rehabilitation of our infrastructural facilities, such as health centres, schools, markets, courts, and so on.

“Our roads are no longer motorable, and this allows hoodlums to operate. Orsu people should be assisted with relief materials like food, foam, clothes, medication, and other essential materials to enable them to start life again,” he appealed.

The House, after much deliberation on the motion, resolved to urge the governor to direct the Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs, NDDC, and other relevant agencies to assist the people of Orsu with relief materials.

It also resolved to urge the governor to rehabilitate critical infrastructures in the area.

The clerk, Chinelo Emeghara, was directed to communicate the resolution of the House to the governor.

The Chinese foreign ministry has called the United States Vice President, JD Vance “ignorant and impolite”.

China was reacting to Vance’s comment that US has been borrowing money from “Chinese peasants”.

Vance spoke amid the tariffs tension between US President, Donald Trump and China.

Trump had threatened to impose 50 percent tariffs on China in retaliation of Beijing’s 34 percent tariffs on US goods.

Responding, China warned that US can’t issue threats in an attempt to get Beijing to bow.

On Monday, Trump gave China until Tuesday to scrap its 34% counter tariff or face an additional 50% tax on Chinese goods exported to the US.

If Trump acts on his threat, US companies could face a total rate of 104% tariff on exports to China – as it comes on top of 20% tariffs already put in place in March and the 34% announced last week.

Defending the US tariffs on Fox News, Vance said: “We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture.”

China’s foreign ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded in a press briefing Tuesday, saying, “It is surprising and sad to hear such ignorant and impolite words from this vice president.”

China has said it will “fight to the end” as it called Trump’s moves “bullying”.

“China’s position on China-US economic and trade relations has been made very clear,” Lin said on Tuesday.
