The United States President Donald Trump’s administration is considering possible drone strikes against Mexican drug cartels, according to NBC News.
The report cited six current and former U.S. military, law enforcement and intelligence officials with knowledge of the matter.
According to the sources, the move was part of an ambitious effort to combat criminal gangs trafficking narcotics across the southern border.
Although there is no official confirmation from the White House, sources told NBC News that discussions were still at the earlier stage.
The planned drone strikes will be targeted at cartel figures and their logistical networks in Mexico with the cooperation of Mexico’s government, the sources said.
Still, the Trump administration has made no final decision and reached no definitive agreement about countering the cartels. Meanwhile, a unilateral covert action, without Mexico’s consent, has not been ruled out and could be an option of last resort, the sources said.
However, it is unclear whether American officials have floated the possibility of drone strikes to the Mexican government.
From the ongoing, if discussion between US and Mexico scale through over joint drone strikes, it would not be the first time they have launched a joint effort to take on the cartels, nor would it be the first time that American military and intelligence worked in concert with Mexico’s law enforcement and army.
But what the Trump administration is contemplating could be unprecedented both in the number of U.S. personnel involved and in the use of American unmanned aircraft to bomb cartel personnel and assets.
Recall that Trump announced 25 percent tariffs on Mexican and Canadian exports to the US as measures to mitigate against the flow of undocumented migrants and drugs.

The National Forum of Kano Indigene Lawyers has condemned the recent ban on Sallah Durbar festivities across the four Kano Emirates, describing it as a violation of cultural and human rights protected under national and international law.
Addressing journalists after submitting an open letter to the Commissioner of Police, Kano State Command, leader of the group Barrister Usman Imam Tudun Wazirchi expressed gratitude to the police for maintaining relative peace during the Sallah period.
However, the lawyers criticized the decision to prohibit Durbar celebrations, calling it “a denial of cultural rights and historical expression of identity”.
The also kicked against the police’s attempt to indict Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi for an attack on the palace guards, during which one of the vigilantes attached to the palace was killed.
Wazirchi said though the IGP’s invitation to Sanusi to appear at the Force Headquarters have been withdrawn, the indigenous lawyers will resist any attempt by the police to disrespect the traditional status of the Hausa/Fulani.
“We appreciate the proactive security efforts during Sallah. Yet, the blanket ban contradicted the cultural freedoms of the people, including their rights to religion, expression, and celebration of heritage,” the letter said.
The lawyers argued that the ban ignored the cultural significance of Durbar celebrations, which involve horse-riding processions and royal displays recognized under Nigerian law and international human rights conventions such as the African Charter and the ICCPR.
They further suggested the ban could be politically motivated, warning against using security concerns as a pretext to suppress Emir Muhammadu Sanusi II and others.
“This appears more like political victimization, especially when Durbar celebrations were allowed in more volatile regions,” the statement read.
The group called on security agencies to uphold cultural rights and ensure equitable treatment across Nigeria’s states, stressing that isolating Kano in such decisions undermines national unity and historical pride.

The actions are said to also include efforts to save coal plants at risk of retirement.
According to the Energy Information Administration, at the beginning of the century, coal generated more than half of US power.
The Republican has long criticized Democrats for targeting coal pollution in environmental regulations, and teased action to support the industry earlier this year.

Pan-Yoruba socio-cultural organisation, Afenifere, has warned against making incendiary statements or introducing unsecular practices that can endanger peaceful coexistence among the residents of Ekiti and other South-West states.
The organisation also called upon intelligence agencies, especially the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services (DSS) to put the Executive Director of Muslim Rights Concerns (MURIC), Prof. Ishaq Akintola, under watch for making comments that can stoke religious conflict in the region.
Afenifere gave this warning on Tuesday in a statement by its Chairman, Ekiti Chapter, Prince Gabriel Alonge. This followed Akintola’s statement that Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele has declared war on Muslims over mosque demolition in Aramoko Ekiti, Ekiti State.
MURIC and Muslim Ummah of South West Nigeria had influenced and justified the establishment of an independent Shariah Arbitration Panel in the South-West, which triggered stiff opposition from all strata of the region due to its implications for peace and security.
In its statement on Monday, Afenifere described Akintola’s comments as unfounded, unguided and capable of endangering peaceful coexistence among brothers of different religious leanings and stoking the embers of religious conflict in Ekiti State and by extension the South-West.
The statement said: “We read the press statement of Prof. Ishaq Akintola with grave concerns. We have also dug deeper into the veracity of his claims that Senator Bamidele declared war on Muslims for demolishing a mosque in Aramoko Ekiti, the headquarters of Ekiti West Local Government Area, Ekiti State.
“Our findings revealed that Senator Bamidele facilitated the reconstruction of Alara Modern Market in Aramoko Ekiti. We also found out that the market, comprising 60 open shops and 40 lock-up shops, was inaugurated on the 28th March 2025 and handed over to Alara-in-Council and Ekiti West Local Government, the two original owners of the property.
“We found out that Chief Imam of Aramoko Ekiti, Alfa Raheem Bamigbola offered the opening prayer at the inauguration of the market last year. Where did Prof. Akintola get his information? For us, at Afenifere, this is a deliberate attempt to destabilise Ekiti State shortly after we got over ripples that their plan to establish the Shariah Arbitration Panel in some south-west states had triggered.
“It is quite disappointing that Prof. Akintola can make such a statement that can cause disaffection, even conflict, among brothers and sisters not only in Aramoko and Ekiti State, but also in the region. South-west is the only part of the federation that has enjoyed some level of peace and stability. We are completely averse to any move or statement that can undermine our peace and stability in part of the region.
“In Yorubaland, we are known for tolerance and not any form of prejudice despite religious diversity. We are known for our spirit of accommodation and not suppressing alternative voices. We are known for constructive engagement and not toxic attacks on politically exposed persons.”
Afenifere, therefore, called upon the Force Intelligence Department of the Nigeria Police and Department of State Services to start profiling every individual making statements that endanger the region’s peaceful coexistence or any group promoting unsecular practices anywhere in the South-West and Nigeria at large.
