Anambra State government said it has uncovered a plot by some politicians to hijack voters cards ahead of the November 8 governorship poll.

The Commissioner for Information, Dr. Law Mefor, revealed this in a statement he made available to journalists in Awka, the state capital on Tuesday.

The commissioner said some individuals have been going around collecting National Identification Numbers (NINs) from unsuspecting members of the public on the guise that the National Identity Management Commission plans to use it to print a permanent identification card for them.

Mefor said those involved plan to use the NINs to override the voting rights of the individuals whose NIN they collected by using them to obtain fresh voter cards for themselves and their cohorts.

Parts of the statement read: “The attention of the Anambra State Government has been drawn to the activities of some individuals and groups who collect National Identification Numbers (NINs) from individuals in various communities in Anambra State under the guise that the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) requires them for revalidation or issuance of permanent Identity Cards.

“However, inquiries with the NIMC have confirmed that there is no such exercise going on, while further investigations have also revealed that these are criminals hired by some desperate politicians to hijack people’s Voter Cards using their names and personal details contained in their NINs.

“With the NINs and the unsuspecting people’s personal details, they can override the individuals’ Voter’s Cards and issue themselves and their cohorts fresh Voter’s Cards.

“The further implication is that whereas they can vote on behalf of the owners during elections, having stolen their identities, the real owners cannot vote because the database no longer recognises them as the true owners.

“The government therefore advises anyone asked to submit his/her NIN to call the Anambra State security number, 5111, for their apprehension and necessary actions.”

A coalition of human rights lawyers from Kano has accused the Federal Government of orchestrating a political plot against the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, which they say led to the controversial cancellation of Sallah Durbar festivities across Kano emirates.

In a strongly-worded petition submitted to the Kano State Commissioner of Police, the National Forum of Kano Indigene Lawyers challenged the security alert cited as justification for the ban, describing it as baseless and potentially a cover for undermining the influence of the reinstated Emir.

The police had earlier prohibited the UNESCO-recognized cultural celebration—classified as an intangible heritage of humanity—over alleged security threats. This decision came even after the 15th Emir, Aminu Ado Bayero, canceled his planned parallel Durbar.

Addressing journalists shortly after submitting the petition, the group’s leader, Barrister Usman Imam Tudun Wazirchi, insisted that the ban was unjustified.

“The so-called security threat has no substantial basis. If Durbars could hold in high-risk states like Borno, Katsina, and Zamfara, why not in Kano? Even during the peak of Boko Haram’s insurgency, such sweeping bans were not enforced,” Tudun Wazirchi argued.

The lawyers accused political actors and “unpatriotic citizens” of spreading fear to suppress the cultural celebration tied to Emir Sanusi’s return to the palace. They emphasized that the ban not only violates cultural rights but also constitutes a broader assault on constitutional freedoms.

Citing a recent Court of Appeal judgment that upheld Emir Sanusi’s legitimacy, the group warned against the misuse of law enforcement for political persecution.

In addition to addressing their petition to local authorities, the lawyers also sent their concerns to international organizations including the United Nations, European Union, and African Union—seeking global attention to what they described as “a calculated attack on Kano’s heritage and rightful traditional leadership.”

The United States has asked some Ukrainians living legally in the country under a Biden-era humanitarian parole program to leave the country.

According to CNN, the Ukranians received a notice this week from the Department of Homeland Security telling them to leave the US.

The message has reportedly prompted panic and later turned out to be erroneous, according to the news channel.

“It is time for you to leave the United States,” the department wrote Thursday to some Ukrainians, as quoted by CNN.

It was a “notice of termination of parole,” which was obtained by CNN.

It added that their parole was to expire in seven days, warning: “Do not attempt to remain in the United States — the federal government will find you.”

However, the message was said to have been “in error,” according to a follow-up communication obtained by CNN.

The subsequent notice also said that “no action will be taken” as indicated in the previous message, adding, “the terms of your parole as originally issued remain unchanged at this time.”

The administration of President Donald Trump is cracking down on immigration, deporting hundreds of illegal immigrants.

DHS confirmed in a statement to CNN that the message sent to some Ukrainians under the parole program was a mistake and that the “parole program has not been terminated”.

There are also no plans to end the program, a spokesperson told CNN. DHS paused admissions under the program in January, shortly after Trump took office.

“This shocked everyone that received this,” said Angela Boelens, the president and founder of IA NICE, an organization that helps sponsor Ukrainian families.

Bago made this known during a meeting with officials of Arab Contractors in Cairo, Egypt, shortly after securing an agreement on agricultural production.

The governor pointed out that African leaders need to take advantage of the abundant potential of the continent to reduce food importation, and ensure food security.

He said, “Niger State alone, with its enormous potential has adequate land and water with over 1,850 km of river front land for irrigation and a youthful population and 5 million hectares of arable land, capable of producing 50 million tons of food.”

Ahmed Moustafa El Assar, Global Chairman of Arab Contractors, pledged to visit Niger State in May 2025 with officials from the Egyptian Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Irrigation Development.

According to him, the visit aims to explore agricultural opportunities in the region.

El Assar also reaffirmed the Egyptian government’s commitment to enhancing food security not only for Egypt but also for Nigeria.

$150m aluminium, copper ingots plant berth in Ogun, to employ 500 people

The current influx of investors to Ogun State has yet to abate, as another recycling plant for the production of aluminium and copper ingots has been established in the state.

The Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of Neveah Ltd, Mr. Ibidapo Lawal stated this on Monday after a meeting with Governor Dapo Abiodun in his office at Oke-Mosan, Abeokuta.

Lawal noted that the multimillion-dollar recycling plant, when fully operational and at full capacity, would generate over $150 million annually and employ more than 500 people.

He said the plant would recycle aluminium scraps from car engines, cans, and other metals into ADC 12 and export them to car manufacturing companies in Asia, Japan, Indonesia, and a host of others.

He said: “The plant is situated in Mowe, and it will employ more than 500 people, thereby creating jobs locally and also contributing to the development of Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole. It will account for about 2.53 per cent of the entire non-oil export for Nigeria.

“Initially, this project was meant to be situated in the north, but we chose Ogun because of its proximity to ports like Tincan, Apapa, and, of course, Lekki.

“Apart from that, you think in terms of capital appreciation. Unlike any other state, you look at the return you are going to get in terms of investment. Ogun is very close to Lagos, and you can see that the price of land and property keeps appreciating.”

The Chief Executive Officer maintained that the availability of skilled labor and expatriates, infrastructure like a good road network, as well as an abundance of gas, led to the decision to choose Ogun State for setting up the business.

“Another thing is the availability of gas. If we set up our plant in another state, we would probably have to power our plant using diesel, but in Ogun State, gas is available, so it is cheaper for us,” Lawal added.

He said his meeting with the governor was to brief him on the progress of work at the site and to seek his support for the successful takeoff of the plant.

“The governor was very happy and quite supportive. It is interesting to see a governor who is willing and ready to work with the people, promote investment, and care so much about the people. It was a very productive meeting,” he said.
