The Federal Government has commenced the national review of the renewable energy curriculum in the country’s higher institutions of learning.
The review of the curriculum is aimed at reshaping how technical education equips future professionals for the clean energy revolution.
The Executive Secretary of the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Prof. Idris Bugaje disclosed this on Tuesday in Abuja at an event on the overhaul of the National Diploma (ND) programme in renewable energy, and the development of two new Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes — one in Solar Photovoltaic (PV) and another in Solar Thermal Technologies.
The event was organised by NBTE in collaboration with INCLUDE Knowledge Platform, African Studies Centre Leiden (ASCL), the Government of the Netherlands and the House of Representatives.
Bugaje noted that stakeholders from academia, government and the private sector are working together to ensure the final curriculum reflects global standards, industry needs, and Nigeria’s unique energy landscape.
The NBTE also pledged to continue engaging partners to ensure a modern, practical, and future-ready curriculum – one that doesn’t just talk about energy transition, but trains the hands and minds who will build it.
The executive secretary said the review would also develop National Occupational Standards (NOS) for solar installations — essential for standardising training across polytechnics and correcting dangerous practices currently observed in the field.
“We’ve seen too many rooftop solar systems failing due to incorrect tilt angles. These failures aren’t just inefficient—they’re dangerous. This curriculum will fix that,” he said.
Bugaje revealed that Nigeria has less than 30 watts of electricity available per capita.
He added that over 60 per cent of grid power is consumed by Lagos and Ogun states, saying if the country was serious about industrialisation and expanding access, a decentralised solar energy is not just a solution, but a necessity.
Bugaje stated: “Nigeria has less than 30 watts of electricity available per capita, and over 60 per cent of grid power is consumed by just two states–Lagos and Ogun.
“If we’re serious about industrialisation and expanding access, decentralised solar energy is not just a solution, it’s a necessity.”
Bugaje stressed that Nigeria’s rich deposits of high-purity silica, particularly in Daura and Jigawa, provide a strategic advantage for local production of solar PV cells.
He noted that tapping into this potential would require a technically skilled workforce trained in solid-state physics, hybrid energy systems, solar cooling, and thermal electricity generation.
Also, the Chairman, House Committee on Renewable Energy, Hon. Victor Ogene, emphasised that recently the Green Chamber had adopted a resolution that makes it mandatory for government ministries, agencies, departments and institutions to transition to renewable energy sources for their power needs, thus necessitating the urgent need to bridge the skill gaps in the sector.
The Knowledge Manager at ASCL-INCLUDE, Victoria Manya described it as a foundation for inclusive growth, energy justice, and skills that matter in today’s world.

The US on Tuesday described China’s retaliation against its tariffs a big mistake, as a global trade war ignited by President Donald Trump’s sweeping levies showed few signs of abating, even as global markets steadied after days of carnage.
DAILY POST reports that China refused to bow to what it called “blackmail” after Trump threatened to ratchet up tariffs on US imports from the world’s No. 2 economy to more than 100% in response to China’s decision to match “reciprocal” duties Trump announced last week.
China’s fast and hardline approach contrasted with more emollient moves by other Asian countries.
Similarly, the European Union is also consulting with member states on how hard to punch back against Trump’s tariffs without causing more harm to its consumers and exporters.
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, in an interview with reporters, blasted Beijing, stressing that any US negotiations with other countries on tariffs were the result of them knocking on Washington’s door and not due to global market turmoil.
“I think it was a big mistake, this Chinese escalation,” he said. “Everything is on the table,” Bessent said.
Meanwhile, China on Tuesday vowed to fight to the end.
China’s Commerce Ministry said that the US side’s threat to escalate tariffs against China was a mistake on top of a mistake, once again exposing the American side’s blackmailing nature.
Also, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a phone call with China’s Premier Li Qiang called on Beijing to ensure a negotiated solution and stressed the need to support a fair trading system founded on a level playing field.
The two also discussed setting up a mechanism to track possible trade diversion caused by the tariffs, von der Leyen’s office said, as the EU fears China will redirect cheap exports from the US to Europe.

United States President Donald Trump is planning to fine immigrants under deportation orders up to $998 a day if they fail to leave the United States and to seize their property if they do not pay.
The fines stem from a 1996 law that was enforced for the first time in 2018, during first term in office.
The administration reportedly plans to apply the penalties retroactively for up to five years, which could result in fines of more than $1 million, considering seizing the property of immigrants who do not pay the fines.
The US Department of Homeland Security, DHS, spokesperson Tricia McLaughlin said in a statement that immigrants in the US illegally should use a mobile app formerly known as CBP One – rebranded as CBP Home under Trump – to “self deport and leave the country now”.
“If they don’t, they will face the consequences. This includes a fine of $998 per day for every day that the illegal alien overstayed their final deportation order,” McLaughlin said.
Recall that President Trump kicked off a sweeping immigration crackdown after taking office in January, testing the bounds of US law to increase arrests and deportations.
The planned fines target the roughly 1.4 million immigrants who have been ordered removed by an immigration judge.
It will also be called that Trump invoked the 1996 law during his first term to levy fines of hundreds of thousands of dollars against nine immigrants seeking sanctuary in churches.
According to court records, the administration withdrew the penalties, but then proceeded with smaller fines of about $60,000 per person against at least four of the immigrants.
