France and Germany are pushing for a more robust reaction to United States President Donald Trump’s tariffs measures.

Trump had on Wednesday announced a 20% tariff on European Union countries like France and Germany, in his bid to dismantle the global trading system.

However, according to Bloomberg, France is now pushing for the EU to hit US tech companies in response to Trump’s tariffs, in a move that would broaden the trade war to the vast services sector.

The report added that France President Emmanuel Macron believes the EU should be ready to respond with options such as targeting US tech and services.

Similarly, speaking to the press on Thursday, about Trump’s tariffs, outgoing German Chancellor, Olaf Scholz, described it as an attack on trade order.

“There will only be losers,” Scholz said.

“This is an attack on a trade order that has created prosperity all over the world, a trade order that is essentially the result of American efforts.”

British broadcaster, Piers Morgan, has predicted what Donald Trump’s tariffs might mean for the UK.

The US President on Wednesday, imposed 10% tariffs on imports of British goods.

During his speech, Trump declared war on countries he described as “foreign cheaters”.

The trade levies include 20% on the EU, 34% on China, 26% on India and 49% on Cambodia.

Trump has now signed the executive order and now Morgan has had his say on the tariffs.

He wrote on X: “PREDICTION: President Trump’s global tariff war is either going to be a spectacular success or a total disaster. I have no clue which.”

In a speech he made, Trump said: “Taxpayers have been ripped off for more than 50 years. But it is not going to happen anymore.

“April 2, 2025, will forever be remembered as the day American industry was reborn, the day America’s destiny was reclaimed, and the day that we began to make America wealthy again.”

More than 2,000 farmers from Awe and Obi Local Government Areas of Nasarawa State have staged a peaceful protest over the alleged seizure of their farmlands by a traditional ruler for a government-backed rice project.

The demonstrators, carrying placards with inscriptions such as “Our land is our only livelihood— don’t take it away!” and “Government tells us to farm, then takes our land—this is injustice!”,

The protesters marched through Agwatashi, stopping at the palace of the Osoho of Olosoho, Alhaji Umar Apeshi, to express their grievances.

According to Arotu Ikwogya, the leader of the protest, more than 10,000 hectares of ancestral farmland have been earmarked for the Jangwa Rice Project without the consent of the affected farmers.

The protesters are demanding that the government halt the land acquisition and engage them in discussions to find a fair resolution.

Hundreds of thousands of fleeing Gazans on Thursday sought shelter in one of the biggest mass displacements of the war, as Israeli forces advanced into the ruins of the city of Rafah, part of a newly announced security zone they intend to seize.

Israeli forces, a day after declaring their intention to capture large swathes of the crowded enclave, pushed into the city on Gaza’s southern edge which had served as a last refuge for people fleeing other areas for much of the war.

According to Gaza’s health ministry, no fewer than 97 people were killed in Israeli strikes in the past 24 hours, including at least 20 killed in an airstrike around dawn in the Shejaia suburb of Gaza City.

The assault to capture Rafah is said to be a major escalation in the war, which Israel restarted last month after effectively abandoning a ceasefire in place since January.

Prime Minister Benjamin Natanyahu said troops were taking an area he called the “Morag Axis”, a reference to an abandoned former Israeli settlement once located between Rafah on Gaza’s southern edge and the adjacent main southern city Khan Younis.

Gazans who had returned homes in the ruins during the ceasefire have now been ordered to flee communities on the northern and southern edges of the strip.

Since the first phase of the ceasefire expired at the start of March with no agreement to prolong it, Israel has imposed a total blockade on all goods reaching Gaza’s 2.3 million residents, recreating what international organisations describe as a humanitarian catastrophe after weeks of relative calm.

Israel’s stated goal since the start of the war has been the destruction of the Hamas militant group which ran Gaza for nearly two decades and led the attack on Israeli communities in October 2023 that precipitated the war.
