Osun CDHR appeals to Gov Adeleke on teacher’s recruitment

The Committee for the Defence of Human Rights, CDHR, Osun State Chapter, have appealed to the state Governor, Ademola Adeleke urgently release the appointment letters of teachers recently recruited into the state’s teaching service.

The plea by the Osun CDHR is coming after a 13-month delay since the recruitment process began.

DAILY POST gathered that thousands of qualified applicants who participated in the Osun State teachers recruitment exercise have also called on Governor Ademola Adeleke to address their plight.

Osun CDHR made the appeal in a letter issued by its Chairman, Emmanuel Olowu on Tuesday and addressed to the Governor through the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Education.

The letter referenced the recruitment approval issued by Governor Adeleke on February 16, 2024 for 5,000 teachers and 250 education officers to serve in both primary and secondary schools across the state.

According to the CDHR, “the recruitment process included the payment of a non-refundable application fee of ₦2,000, with a total of 32,000 applications received during the two-week window.

“Out of the applicants, 29,000 candidates accessed the examination portal, while 27,000 successfully sat for the recruitment exam, which was held on 27 and 28 March 2024.

“The results of the examinations were published on 17 April 2024, and shortlisted candidates were interviewed between 9 and 13 September 2024, the letter stated.”

Despite the completion of the recruitment stages, successful candidates have yet to receive appointment letters, prompting concerns over prolonged unemployment and unaddressed vacancies in the education sector.

“The delay has stretched to approximately thirteen months with no official communication on when appointment letters will be issued,” the letter read in part.

Olowu criticised the continued use of stop-gap measures such as the Teachers Elongation Policy and the Imole Youth Corps, which he argued are inadequate substitutes for professionally trained teachers.

“The Imole Youth Corps are mostly untrained and could cause more harm than good to the education of our children,” he noted.

He stated that the continued engagement of these temporary personnel, while sidelining successful candidates, contradicts the promises made by the current administration to improve the education sector.

The group warned that the persistent shortage of teachers is straining existing staff and affecting the quality of education in public schools across the state.

They demanded that the appointment letters be issued within five days, stressing the urgency of addressing the teacher shortfall and fulfilling the state’s commitment to education.

Calling for swift intervention, he added, “The Osun education system is suffering while qualified applicants are eager to serve.

“We look forward to your prompt response and positive action.”

A popular socialite and hotelier has been killed by unknown persons suspected to be assassins in Akure, Ondo State capital.

The hotel owner, Adesoji Adeleye, was stabbed to death in one of the rooms of his Klazz Five Hotel situated in Arakale axis of Akure metropolis.

The armed men were said to have sneaked into the hotel where Adeleye slept over after which they stabbed him.

The men were said to have overpowered the hotelier and stabbed him severally before he died, leaving him in the pool of his blood.

A close associate of the deceased revealed that he was with Adeleye on Monday night with a promise to meet again today but expressed surprise over the killing of his friend of many years.

A source within the community, however, said the incident was reported to the police while detectives from the State Police Command visited the scene of the incident.

Confirming the incident, the State Police Public Relations Officer, (PPRO) Alayande Olayinka, said, “We have sent a team of detectives to the place and we are on the trail of the perpetrators and as soon as we apprehend them, they will be brought to book.”
