Prime Minister Mikhail Mishustin on Tuesday declared Russia the dominant country in global energy markets, despite sanctions.

The PM spoke at a session on oil and coal industries development by 2050, where he elaborated on the New Nuclear and Energy Technologies.

According to Mishustin, the project will strengthen Russia’s technological sovereignty, sustaining its status as a great power.

The prime minister asserted that, even with punitive actions by several nations, “Russia maintains leading positions in global energy resource markets.”

He added that Russia is “proactively expanding logistical routes, primarily towards friendly countries, and financing appropriate infrastructure.”

Mishustin said the New Nuclear and Energy Technologies project stipulates increased support for the design and implementation of advanced national solutions, modern materials, equipment and component
parts.

The project will help companies accelerate the modernisation of their production facilities and join efforts to create a solid foundation for future growth.

Annual investment in the oil sector exceeds 5 trillion roubles, Mishustin said, impacting the development of many related sectors.

“Russia accounts for about 10 percent of the global oil market,” the PM added. “We are working with our OPEC+ partners and are aware of our responsibility for global energy security.”

The United Nations on Tuesday refuted Israel’s claims that there was enough food in the Gaza Strip to last for a long period, despite the closure of all 25 bakeries in the enclave supported by the World Food Programme.

No aid has been delivered to the Palestinian enclave since 2 March.

The office of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said it would not allow the entry of goods and supplies into Gaza until Hamas releases all remaining hostages.

It will be recalled that later in March, Israel resumed its bombardment of Gaza after a two-month truce and sent troops back into the enclave.

The Israeli military agency that coordinates aid deliveries, COGAT, said on Tuesday that during the truce some 25,200 lorries entered Gaza, carrying almost 450,000 tonnes of aid.

“That’s nearly a third of the total lorries that entered Gaza during the entire war, in just over a month. There is enough food for a long period of time, if Hamas lets the civilians have it,” COGAT said in a post on X.

UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric said as far as the UN was concerned, the claim was ridiculous, stressing that they were at the end of their supplies.

“You know, the World Food Programme doesn’t close its bakeries for fun. If there’s no flour, if there’s no cooking gas, the bakeries cannot open,” Dujarric added.

The 78-year-old Republican asserted there were “methods” for doing so.

However, according to Johnson, achieving this would require an amendment to the constitution.

Speaking to NBC News about the development on Tuesday, Johnson said: “I just told everybody to read the constitution; there is a constitutional path. You have to amend the constitution to do it, and that is a high bar.”

Johnson then said that while he and Trump had “joked about it”, he believed the president “recognises the constitutional limitations.”

Finland has announced plans to withdraw from the Ottawa Treaty as countries in Europe shore up against potential threats from Russia.

The Ottawa Treaty is the Anti-Personnel Mine Ban Convention, which countries endorsed in 1997 to eliminate anti-personnel landmines around the world.

In recent weeks, countries have been making a U-turn on the treaty in order to protect their territory, due to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine since 2022.

On Tuesday, Finland’s Prime Minister Petteri Orpo said a changed security environment in Europe precipitated his country’s resolution to exit the Ottawa Treaty.

Orpo stated that Finland and Europe must “evaluate all measures to strengthen our deterrence and defence capabilities, individually and in NATO.”

“We also propose that Finland starts to prepare for withdrawal from the Ottawa agreement,” the prime minister said at a news conference.

Finland’s announcement comes weeks after four other nations in the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation – Poland, Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia – took a similar decision.

In response, Latvia’s Defence Minister Andris Sprūds described Finland as an important regional partner in NATO which shares a very long border with Russia.

“Finland’s decision to prepare for withdrawal from the Ottawa Convention aligns Finland with other regional partners in NATO, including Latvia, that have made similar decisions recently,” he wrote on X.

Last week, the transnational military alliance warned Russia against further attacks in Europe, vowing that NATO’s retaliation would be “devastating.”

“If anyone thinks they can get away with an attack on Poland or on any other ally, they will be met with
the full force of this fierce alliance,” said Secretary General Mark Rutte.
