Lagos app-based drivers suspend inDrive operations, cite security risks
The Lagos State Council of the Amalgamated Union of App-Based Transporters of Nigeria, AUATON has instructed its members to suspend operations on the inDrive platform, citing security risks and exploitative pricing policies.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, AUATON’s Public Relations Officer, Mr Steven Iwindoye, condemned inDrive’s failure to implement adequate security measures, which he said has led to a rise in attacks on drivers.
“The lack of proper rider verification on the platform has made it easy for criminals to pose as passengers, ambush drivers, and in some cases, take their lives,” Iwindoye stated.
Beyond safety concerns, he criticized inDrive’s fare negotiation model, which allows passengers to dictate fares—often far below reasonable rates—leaving drivers struggling to cover operational costs.
“With the rising cost of fuel, vehicle maintenance, and other expenses, drivers are being forced into unsustainable working conditions. Some passengers slash fares by as much as 50%, making it nearly impossible for drivers to earn a decent livelihood,” he added.
AUATON has called on inDrive to review its policies and implement stronger security protocols to protect drivers and ensure fair compensation.
The union’s demands include: Enhanced security measures through a comprehensive verification system for both riders and drivers, a fair and sustainable fare structure that reflects the rising costs of transportation and vehicle maintenance., a responsive support system to promptly address drivers’ concerns and operational challenges. recognition of drivers’ rights and equitable treatment within the platform’s policies.
Until these issues are addressed, AUATON has directed all its members to suspend ride acceptance on inDrive, effectively disrupting its operations in Lagos.
“We have instructed our drivers to stop accepting rides from inDrive until meaningful reforms are implemented,” said Steven Iwindoye, AUATON’s Public Relations Officer.
He called on the government and relevant regulatory bodies to intervene and ensure inDrive operates transparently and prioritizes driver safety.
“InDrive must recognize that drivers are the backbone of their business. Without us, there is no inDrive. We will not return to the platform until our safety, dignity, and well-being are guaranteed,” Iwindoye added.

Israeli airstrike reportedly hits UN-run Gaza hospital, killing 19
An Israeli airstrike in northern Gaza has reportedly struck a hospital operated by the UN agency for Palestinian refugees.
About 19 people were killed, including nine minors, and others were injured in the strike on Jabalia today, local media reported.
An Israeli military spokesman said the claim was under investigation.
NAN reports that the internally displaced people were present near the hospital and fire broke out in the building.
Meanwhile, in another attack in Gaza, four people were killed, while rescue teams in Khan Younis recovered the bodies of 12 people, including women and children, from the rubble, the report added.
Last month, the Israeli military hit targets across Gaza, ending a weeks-long standoff over extending the ceasefire that halted fighting between Isreal and Palestinian group Hamas in January.
Following the strikes, the Head of the UN’s humanitarian affairs bureau, Tom Fletcher, reacted to the dreadful news of Israel’s deadly attacks on Gaza.

Bandits kill vigilante commander, injure others in Katsina attack
A bandit attack on Bajat and Dole villages in Safana Local Government Area (LGA) of Katsina State resulted in the death of a vigilante commander and injuries to several others on Tuesday.
The incident was revealed in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on Wednesday.
According to Makama, the armed bandits stormed the villages around 6 p.m. and began shooting sporadically, leaving residents in panic.
During the attack, Nura Baushe, a vigilante commander, was shot and killed while attempting to defend the community.
Other victims, identified as Amadu Dole, Surajo Shehu, and Shafiu Sulaiman, sustained varying degrees of bullet wounds and were immediately rushed to the Federal Teaching Hospital Katsina for medical treatment.
Security forces were later deployed to the area, restoring normalcy after the attack.
