Two women have tragically lost their lives in Gezawa Local Government Area of Kano State after reportedly falling into a puddle while attempting to wash their bodies after work at a zobo processing factory.

The incident which occurred on Monday evening, was confirmed in a press release issued on Tuesday by the Kano State Fire Service Public Relations Officer, Assistant Chief Fire Officer Saminu Yusif Abdullahi.

According to the statement, the fire service received an emergency call at about 11:15 a.m. on Tuesday from the commander of a local vigilante group in Gezawa, who reported that the women had entered the puddle with the intention of washing their bodies after closing from work.

“According to their relatives, they are workers in a zobo processing company and entered the water with the intention of washing their bodies after closing from duty, which resulted in the loss of their lives,” the statement said.

Although a search for the victims began on Monday evening, their bodies were only recovered on Tuesday morning. They were found unconscious and handed over to Officer Musa Garba of the Gezawa Police Division.

The fire service did not release the names of the deceased, and further details surrounding the circumstances of the incident remain unclear.

The Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN), popularly known as the Shi’ites, has accused Nigerian security agencies—particularly the police—of killing detained ‘Free Palestine’ protesters in custody, following the violent dispersal of the International Quds Day protest held in Abuja on March 28, 2025.

At a press briefing held in Abuja on Tuesday, Sheikh Sidi Munir Mainasara, who spoke on behalf of the movement led by Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky, alleged that at least 27 protesters have died.

According to him, 26 were killed during the initial security crackdown, while one more detainee, identified as Huzaifa Muhammad from Tudun Iya, Katsina State, reportedly died in custody on Monday, April 7, at the Intelligence Response Team (IRT) detention facility in Guzape, Abuja.

“We recently received shocking news that Free Palestine protesters detained by the FCT Police Command since March 28 are dying in custody. Among those who recently passed away is Shaheed Huzaifa Muhammad, who attained martyrdom around 6 p.m. on April 7,” Sheikh Mainasara stated.

The group condemned what it described as continued human rights violations against its members and called the deaths “crimes against humanity.”

It also criticized what it sees as contradictions in the government’s position, pointing out that while the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Ambassador Yusuf Maitama Tuggar, publicly condemned Israeli actions in Gaza, security forces simultaneously launched a brutal crackdown on pro-Palestine demonstrations in Nigeria’s capital.

Sheikh Mainasara emphasized the movement’s intent to seek justice through legal action and prayer. “We will hold the federal government, led by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, accountable for the deaths and illegal detentions. We vow to challenge every instance of human rights abuse in court,” he said.

He reiterated the group’s commitment to non-violent resistance, calling for the unconditional release of all detained protesters and demanding an independent investigation into the deaths.

The IMN has long organized Quds Day marches in solidarity with Palestinians, often clashing with Nigerian authorities, who have proscribed the movement.

The trio, who in March held a press conference under the banner “Group Demands Immediate Refund of N13.4 Billion Allegedly Diverted from State Coffers by the Kogi State Governor Usman Ododo”, have now withdrawn the claim, citing a misrepresentation of facts and a clearer understanding of the financial details involved.

In a letter addressed to Governor Ododo and made available to journalists on Tuesday, Okai Austin wrote, “I hereby apologise on behalf of myself, Okpanachi Jacob, and Peter Onuma, who were invited as part of the press conference, and withdraw the said statement in its entirety.”

The apology also addressed accusations of political bias or ulterior motives. “Furthermore, we wish to categorically state that our activities within Kogi State are devoid of bigotry or party differences, as alleged by some quarters, but rather reflect sincere participation in ensuring that you write your name in the golden history of our dear state.”

Reaffirming their democratic intentions, the letter added, “Our collective intention has consistently been to provide an opposing voice and contribute to holding the government accountable, a role we believe is vital in a democratic society.”

They also distanced themselves from any personal attacks on the governor. “We have no personal animosity, hatred, or ill feelings towards your government, personality, tribe, or any member of your family. We hold Your Excellency, Governor Usman Ododo, in high regard as the duly elected Governor of our esteemed state.”

“It is never our intention to demean Your Excellency in person, your family, or your office. However, we take full responsibility for any damage or inconvenience our assertions may have caused,” the letter continued.

Concluding the apology, they said, “This retraction is made in good faith, and we deeply regret any distress or harm the previous remarks may have caused to Your Excellency, the administration, or the good people of Kogi State.”

Acting US Ambassador to the United Nations, Dorothy Shea said the US would have no patience for bad faith negotiation or violation of commitments as it seeks to end the war in Ukraine.

Shea stated this on Tuesday while speaking to the 15-member Security Council.

“We will ultimately judge President (Vladimir) Putin’s commitment to a ceasefire by Russia’s actions,” Shea said.

DAILY POST reports that the Security Council met after a Russian missile attack on the Ukrainian city of Kryvyi Rih last week killed 11 adults and nine children in one of the deadliest attacks on civilians in months, jeopardizing Washington’s ceasefire push.

“We urge the Russian Federation to bear in mind that strikes like those on Kryvyi Rih, and executions of prisoners of war, have the potential to damage peace efforts and all dependent discussions,” Shea added.

According to Russia, without providing evidence, Friday’s strike had targeted a meeting of Ukrainian service members and foreign trainers and killed up to 85 of them, a claim Kyiv rejected as disinformation.

Meanwhile, Russia’s UN Ambassador, Vassily Nebenzia on Tuesday blamed the civilian deaths on a Ukrainian attempt to intercept the Russian attack.

Nebenzia also reminded the Security Council that one of Moscow’s long-stated goals was Ukrainian demilitarization, which it would achieve using military or negotiating means in such a way to make sure that Ukraine is no longer a threat to Russia.

“We are ready to have a serious and practical dialogue, but we will not allow anyone to deceive us. We will not allow anyone to use this negotiating process in the interest of strengthening the Kyiv regime’s military potential,” he said.

On her part, Ukraine’s deputy UN Ambassador Khrystyna Hayovyshyn noted that her country had accepted a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire.

“In response to this proposal, Russia targets Ukrainian cities and villages with drones, bombs, artillery and ballistic and cruise missile attacks. Russia demonstrates its complete disregard for international peace efforts led by the United States,” she stated.
