The Donald Trump administration on Friday informed Congress that it would cut nearly all remaining jobs at the US Agency for International Development, USAID, and shut down the agency.

USAID staff were informed in an internal memo that all roles not required by law would be terminated in July and September.

The memo was sent to staff by the agency’s acting deputy administrator, Jeremy Lewin, who is also a member of Elon Musk’s job-cutting Department of Government Efficiency.

The notice came on the same day that a powerful earthquake struck Thailand and Myanmar, toppling buildings and causing numerous fatalities.

USAID has previously played a major role in coordinating disaster relief efforts.

In the memo, Lewin confirmed that all agency personnel worldwide would receive emails informing them that their jobs were being eliminated.

Staff would be given the choice of being dismissed on 1 July or 2 September, according to the memo.

Over the next three months, the State Department would assume USAID’s remaining “life-saving and strategic aid programming”.

It added that USAID personnel would not automatically be transferred to the department, which would conduct “a separate and independent hiring process.”

Nigeria’s First Lady, Oluremi Tinubu, has reacted to a now-viral controversial video of nursing students chanting in rejection during her visit to Delta State College of Nursing Sciences.

DAILY POST reported on Friday that a nursing student of Delta State College of Nursing Sciences, Edobor Osatohemwen, was earlier issued a query for posting a video in which some students refused to eulogise the wife of Nigeria’s president, Bola Ahmed Tinubu, at a function in Asaba.

Following this, the college issued Edobor a query letter, which sparked widespread condemnation and calls for its withdrawal.

Subsequently, in an update, the school bowed to pressure and withdrew the query.

Meanwhile, in a statement by Remi Tinubu’s spokesperson, Busola Kukoyi, she downplayed the rejection chant, describing it as a “lighthearted and jovial” moment from a section of the students.

“The event was primarily to motivate midwives across the nation, with the aim of reducing infant and maternal mortality and morbidity in Nigeria. Her Excellency deeply appreciates the warm reception by the Delta State Government and the people of Delta State, as well as the enthusiasm shown by nurses, midwives, women’s groups, and student nurses present at the event.

“However, a section of the video, allegedly recorded by some students at the event, showed a spontaneous and playful twist to the welcome song. Sequel to that, it has come to our attention that some of the students of the Delta State College of Nursing Sciences have been issued a query regarding their participation in the chants.

“While the Office of the First Lady of Nigeria respects the right of institutions to uphold discipline, it is important to recognise that students, in moments of excitement, often express themselves in a lighthearted and jovial manner,” the statement read.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, stated that while Nigeria’s visa-on-arrival policy has not been scrapped, the government is prepared to take a firm stance on visa violations.

Tunji-Ojo has now declared that foreigners who exceed their visa duration by three months will face a five-year entry ban, while those who remain in the country illegally for a year will be barred from re-entering Nigeria for 10 years.

“If you overstay your Nigerian visa for three months, we will ban you for five years.

“If you overstay for one year, we will ban you for ten years,” Tunji-Ojo said while speaking on Arise TV.
