This comes after they accused the Russian embassy of helping a pro-Kremlin lawmaker escape imprisonment.

Modolva’s decision has led to Russia declaring it will mount an “appropriate response”.

Moldova’s Foreign Ministry ordered the Russian embassy employees to leave the country on Monday.

In a message on Telegram, it explained that its decision was “based on clear evidence on the conduct of activities contrary to the diplomatic status”.

The move provoked an immediate response from Moscow, with Russia’s Foreign Ministry announcing it would hit back, according to a report by state-run news agency RIA Novosti.

The diplomatic spat arose after Moldova accused the Russian embassy on Monday of engineering the escape of a pro-Kremlin Moldovan lawmaker to the Russian-backed breakaway Transnistria region just as he was about to be jailed over illegal political funding charges.

The case of Alexander Nesterovschii is the latest in which Moldova’s pro-European government has accused Russia of meddling in its political landscape, allegations that Moscow denies.

Moldova’s security service published a video footage which allegedly showed Nesterovschii entering the Russian Embassy in Chisinau on March 18, a day before a court sentenced him to 12 years in jail.

The lawmaker has denied charges of illegally channelling money to a pro-Russian party associated with fugitive businessman Ilan Shor at local elections in 2023, as well as the 2024 presidential vote and a national referendum on Moldova’s EU aspirations.

Moldova’s security service claims that on the day of his sentencing, Nesterovschii was taken in a car with diplomatic plates to the Transnistria region.

The Transnistria region broke away from Moldovan control in the early 1990s.

In a statement, the Russian embassy said the allegations of interference in the lawmaker’s case were unfounded and unacceptable. It called on the Moldovan authorities to “refrain from provocative speculation”.

United Nations officials said the bodies of eight Red Crescent medics and other Palestinian rescue workers who came under fire more than a week ago have been recovered from a grave in the sand in the south of the Gaza Strip.

Head of the UN agency for Palestinian Refugees, UNRWA, Philippe Lazzarini said on X on Monday that the bodies had been discarded in shallow graves, a profound violation of human dignity.

The International Committee of the Red Cross, in a statement late on Sunday, said it was appalled at the deaths.

“Their bodies were identified today and have been recovered for dignified burial. These staff and volunteers were risking their own lives to provide support to others,” it said.

According to the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies, IFRC, one worker from the nine-strong Red Crescent group was still unaccounted for.

It, however, did not immediately comment on the details of the site where the bodies were found.

The group were said to have gone missing on March 23, after Israel resumed an all-out offensive against Hamas earlier this month.

The Palestine Red Crescent said it also recovered the bodies of six civil defence members and one UN employee from the same area, adding that Israeli forces had targeted the workers.

Meanwhile, the Israeli military said on Monday that an inquiry had found that on March 23, troops opened fire on a group of vehicles that included ambulances and fire trucks when the vehicles approached a position without prior coordination and without headlights or emergency signals.

It said several militants belonging to the militant groups Hamas and Islamic Jihad were killed.

“The IDF condemns the repeated use of civilian infrastructure by the terrorist organizations in the Gaza Strip, including the use of medical facilities and ambulances for terrorist purposes,” it said in a statement.

The Kremlin on Monday said that Russia and the United States are working on ideas for a possible peace settlement in Ukraine and on building bilateral ties despite US President Donald Trump saying he was pissed off with Vladimir Putin.

DAILY POST reports that Trump had said he was very angry after the Russian leader criticised the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

This was as he suggested he could impose secondary tariffs of 25%-50% on buyers of Russian oil.

The US president later reiterated that he was disappointed with Putin, saying , “I think we are making progress, step by step.”

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Moscow was continuing to work with Washington, stating that Putin remained open to contacts with Trump.

“We are continuing to work with the American side, first of all to build our bilateral relations, which were badly damaged during the previous (US) administration.

“And we are also working on the implementation of some ideas related to the Ukrainian settlement. This work is underway, but so far there are no specifics that we could or should tell you about. This is a time-consuming process, probably due to its complexity,” Peskov said.

Trump, who says he wants to be remembered as a peacemaker, has repeatedly said he wants the three-year conflict in Ukraine to end and has warned of the risks of it escalating into a world war between the United States and Russia.

Finland’s President Alexander Stubb said on Sunday he had told US President Donald Trump during a Florida meeting on Saturday that a deadline needs to be set for establishing a Ukraine ceasefire in order to make it happen.

“I came out with an impression that obviously he’s the only person who can broker a peace, a ceasefire, because he’s the only one that Putin is afraid of and in that sense, respects,” Stubb said.
