The cause of the earthquake with a 7.7 magnitude that hit central Myanmar and parts of Bangkok, Thailand, has been revealed.

The United States Geological Survey, USGS, announced on Friday morning that an earthquake with a 7.7 magnitude had occurred in Myanmar with Bangkok among other areas affected.

The earthquake was described as shallow, arising at a depth of just 10km (6 miles), but the damage is expected to be enormous.

Following the collapse of multiple buildings, destruction of roads and bridges, the death toll is climbing from the current 144 with fatalities reported in both Myanmar and Thailand.

According to experts, earthquakes occur when huge slabs of rock that make up the Earth’s crust, known as tectonic plates, move against each other.

USGS said that the Myanmar quake occurred as the result of “strike slip faulting” between the India and Eurasia plates.

It means that these two tectonic plates rubbed sideways against each other.

Oetken did not require that Voice of America should to resume broadcasts, but said that employees should not be fired until further court proceedings could determine whether the shutdown was arbitrary and capricious in violation of federal law.

“This is a decisive victory for press freedom and the First Amendment, and a sharp rebuke to an administration that has shown utter disregard for the principles that define our democracy,” said Andrew Celli, an attorney for the plaintiffs.

At the time of filing this report, the US Agency for Global Media, which oversees Voice of America, Radio Free Europe, and other government-funded media, has not commented on the development.

According to court documents filed by the plaintiffs, the agency had told unions that it was about to terminate 623 Voice of America employees, a number that entirely forecloses any attempt to resume broadcasts at the level envisioned by Congress.

It was gathered that Voice of America was founded to combat Nazi propaganda at the height of World War Two, and it has grown to become an international media broadcaster, operating in more than 40 languages and spreading US news narratives into countries lacking a free press.

A U.S. appeals court on Friday ruled that Musk and DOGE can keep making cuts to USAID while they appeal a lower court order that had barred them from doing so.

A US Representative Gregory Meeks, top Democrat on the House Foreign Affairs Committee, said in a statement that closing USAID was illegal and aimed at withdrawing the US from its global leadership role with as much cruelty and disruption as possible.

At the time of filing this report, the exact number of personnel being fired was not immediately available.

This is as international aid began to arrive in Myanmar on Saturday as rescuers searched for survivors after incident devastated the Southeast Asian nation amid concerns that the number killed would soar.

The junta, in a statement issued on state media, said infrastructure such as roads, bridges, and buildings were affected, leading to casualties and injuries among civilians, adding that search and rescue operations are currently being carried out in the affected areas.

DAILY POST reports that the junta leader, General Min Aung Hlaing, had warned on Friday of more deaths and injuries as he sought for help and donations.

It was gathered that a Chinese rescue team arrived on Saturday while Russia and the US offered aid in the disaster, which struck at lunchtime on Friday and damaged hundreds of buildings in neighbouring Thailand.

The United States Geological Service’s predictive modelling estimated that the death toll could exceed 10,000 people in Myanmar, stating that losses could be greater than the value of the country’s gross domestic product.

Much of the devastation was said to be in Myanmar’s second-largest city, Mandalay, close to the epicentre of the quake.

In the Thai capital Bangkok, 1,000 km from the epicentre a rescue mission was stepped up on Saturday to find construction workers trapped under the rubble of a collapsed 33-storey tower.

The Chinese embassy said in a Facebook post that a 37-strong team from China landed in Yangon, Myanmar’s former capital, early on Saturday, carrying medicine and equipment to detect signs of life with them.

Russia said it was sending 120 experienced rescuers as well as doctors and search dogs.

Similarly, US President Donald Trump said on Friday that he had spoken with officials in Myanmar, stressing that his administration would be providing some form of assistance.

Thai authorities said nine people had died and 101 were missing in Bangkok, mostly labourers trapped in the rubble of the collapsed tower.

“We will do everything, we will not give up on saving lives, we will use all resources,” Bangkok Governor Chadchart Sittipunt said at the site on Saturday, as excavators moved debris and drones scoured the rubble searching for survivors.

“But, unlucky to her, she didn’t know that this young man was outside the country. Upon a slightest provocation, she will come up with allegation of sexual harassment.”

He added, “even her present husband, she married him out of something like this. She threatened to sue the man. I have a letter circulated over the world that the man should pay her N10,000,000,000.00 (Ten Billion Naira) or marry her under duress. So the marriage was under duress. A product of blackmail…”

“And without going into her character, ask Senator Natasha how many husbands has she had in her life at the age of 47 or 45,” he said.

The lawyers in the letter noted that alleged defamatory statements made by Nwaebonyi were widely circulated by users, of other social media platforms like Facebook, instagram and many more within and outside Nigeria with the intention of damaging the reputation of their clients.

The letter reads in part: The said defamatory statements uttered by you in the TV Programme under reference were words which directly deferred to our clients and their natural and ordinary meaning were understood by right thinking members of society to respectively mean the following:

Late on Friday, she told journalists she was afraid for her husband’s life and had no idea where he was.

Mrs Nwaeke, who was battling with emotions and concern, called on Nigerians and others for help.

“When he got to Abuja, he called that he had landed. I said, ‘Thank God’.

“The next thing I saw this night: people were calling me and said he got an interview. I said, ‘What interview? Interview for what?’ Not until I saw things flying on the internet that he granted an interview. What happened? I said, ‘That is not my husband. That is not my husband.’

This came a few hours after her husband had given an exclusive interview in which he levelled several allegations against Rivers Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Among other things, he accused the governor of planning to support Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed in the 2027 presidential election and also meeting with and encouraging militants to carry out attacks on oil facilities and other assets.

In another video, Mrs Nwaeke, called on Governor Fubara to intervene over her husband’s whereabouts, claiming that her husband resigned under duress.

She added that her husband was in trouble and was being forced to confess to things he knew nothing about and that he had resigned to avoid trouble.

Mrs Nwaeke, beyond raising the alarm in an interview with Channels TV, also made a call to Governor Fubara pleading with him to help her husband.

The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Egbetokun, has reacted to the recent violent mob action against a group of alleged travelling hunters along the Uromi-Obajana Road, Edo State.

The IGP strongly condemned the violent mob action carried out against the group of travelers by a local vigilante group.

This is following President Bola Tinubu’s Friday’s directive to the Nigeria Police and other security agencies to ensure that the killers of the northern hunters were brought to justice and punished in accordance with the law.

DAILY POST reports that the victims, who were on their way from Port Harcourt, Rivers State to Kano State to celebrate the Sallah festivities, were intercepted on Thursday and tragically killed by local vigilantes in the Uromi community of Esan North Local Government Area, Edo State.

According to reports, the local vigilantes mistakenly identified the hunters as kidnappers terrorising the area.

Some of the victims were reportedly burnt alive, while others were beaten to death by the mob.

The travelers were said to have been found in possession of nineteen (19) locally fabricated firearms when intercepted by the vigilantes.

The vigilantes were said to have wondered how the individuals claiming to be hunters were in possession of such a number of arms and concluded they were kidnappers.

Regrettably, without allowing for due process or proper investigation into their claims, the vigilante group subjected some of them to unlawful mob justice, resulting in tragic consequences.

In immediate response, the Edo State Police Command deployed operatives to the affected community, restoring law and order.

So far, fourteen suspects have been arrested in connection with the incident, while a manhunt has been launched for other perpetrators involved in the mob action.

A statement signed by ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the Force Public Relations Officer, said that the IGP has directed the Deputy Inspector-General of Police in charge of the Force Criminal Investigation Department, FCID, DIG Sadiq Abubakar, to take over the case and ensure a thorough, impartial, and expedited investigation.

The statement added that the IGP assured the public that the police remained committed to upholding the rule of law and will not tolerate any form of unlawful killings or extrajudicial actions under any guise.

The IGP further appealed for calm and urged members of the public to cooperate fully with the investigation, emphasizing that anyone found culpable will be made to face the full weight of the law.

However, the statement added that “the Nigeria Police Force reiterates that the unlawful possession of firearms remains a criminal offense under Nigerian law.

“Individuals in possession of unlicensed firearms are advised to report to the nearest police station to surrender such weapons or initiate the appropriate licensing process.”

The Force warned the public “to desist from taking the law into their hands and encourages the prompt reporting of suspicious activities to lawful authorities.”

The immediate-past Head of the Civil Service in Rivers State, Dr. George Nweke, has made some claims against the suspended governor of the state, Siminalayi Fubara.

DAILY POST reported that Nweke resigned from office on Tuesday, according to a statement signed by the Chief of Staff to the Rivers State Sole Administrator, Retired Vice Admiral Ibok-Ete Ekwe Ibas.

According to him, Governor Fubara destroyed the state assembly complex and also orchestrated the destruction of oil installations in the state.

He believes that President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency and suspension of the latter, which has been described as unconstitutional by many Nigerians, saved the people of the State from anarchy.

Nweke addressed the press in Port Harcourt, the Rivers State capital on Friday, where he made the claims about the governor, alleging some of the plans were made right before him.

Nweke said that Governor Fubara was behind the crisis in the State by orchestrating destruction of public buildings and other sinister motives.

He said, “With the loads of misinformation on print and electronic media, I have chosen to put the record straight, I was not sacked neither was I pressured to resign, I did it willingly from the depth of my heart.

“However, as an insider and a key player in this administration by my position, who worked closely with Siminalayi Fubara, it will be unfair for me to keep silent or not to address some key factors that has affected or will affect our state if we continue on this trajectory.

“I want to use this medium to thank Mr. President for a swift intervention in Rivers State crisis, especially on the state of emergency that was declared and assented to by the National Assembly.

“I am not speaking from outside, I am speaking as an insider.

“If not for the intervention of Mr. President, Nigeria would have faced the worst economic sabotage and Rivers State would have been up in flames.

“First, it all started with the Rivers State House of Assembly where the Governor, Siminilayi Fubara directed his Chief of Staff (Edison Ehie) to burn down the Assembly in a way to avert his impeachment, that evening Edison was in Government House with two other boys, including the former chairman of Obio/Akpor LGA, one Chijioke.

“I was there with them when a bag of money was handed over to Edison for that operation, though I do not know the amount inside.I want to tell Rivers people today that the House of Assembly complex in Moscow Road was clearly brought down by Edison Ehie under the instructions of Governor Siminilayi Fubara, I challenge him to an open confrontation and I will throw more light on it.

“A day after that incident, I almost resigned but I was very scared because I know the power of a sitting governor and he knew that I am aware of the whole plan and that I am discomforted with the unconscionable act and deliberate posture of innocence and mien of a sheep.

“Another attempt was also made to destroy the residential quarters of the House of Assembly members. If not for the press conference that was made there by Rivers youths, Rivers elders and National Assembly members, that would have been another barbaric demolition in Rivers State.

“I came to realise that they actually wanted to demolish that second building because after some weeks, he personally told me that if he knew early he would have gone to pull down their hall before visiting the residential quarters of the Assembly and that he didn’t actually know that they had such a beautiful hall were they are using now for their sitting.

“I was shocked and I asked myself how could a man that wants to lead his people be destroying his state assets and wasting public funds on a needless ego fight.

“Thirdly, I want to advise some key stakeholders who have condemned the state of emergency made by the President and confirmed by the National Assembly to retract their statements, I also understand that they are only seeing the surface.

“If the President did not take proactive step, no one knows who would have been affected by the sinister plans that were cooking. While I thank Mr. President for the state of emergency that was declared in Rivers State for a period of six months, I will plead with him not to give up on Rivers State affairs because a lot are going on there with Governor Fubara.

“One of the factors that got me removed was when Governor Fubara told me that they will use the Ijaws to decide who will become the next president of Nigeria and I asked him how will that work?

“Is it by votes or by what means? He clearly told me that he is the chief security officer of Rivers State and his brother is in charge of Bayelsa State and all the pipelines are under their care, that at the appropriate time they will tell the boys what to do and fund was not an issue.

“That was why when he made that statement in his public function that ‘I will tell the boys what to do at the appropriate time’, I knew something was up and perhaps the time was near.”
