The United States has ordered some French companies with US government contracts to comply with his executive order banning diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes.

This is as it highlighted the extraterritorial reach of US policies and their potential impact on European corporate practices.

The companies were asked to confirm their compliance in a questionnaire entitled “Certification Regarding Compliance With Applicable Federal Anti-Discrimination Law.”

President Donald Trump’s “America First” policies have reportedly stoked economic and political tensions between the US and Europe since his January 20 inauguration.

The US questionnaire raises questions about the practical changes targeted companies may need to implement, given the differing approaches between the US and France.

It was gathered that American companies have embraced Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion, DEI, policies, tracking race and ethnicity data and setting diversity targets.

In France, a secular approach limits such practices, with laws restricting data collection and corporate efforts focusing more on gender and socioeconomic background.

The questionnaire will also spark concerns in European boardrooms that the Trump administration is widening its fight against DEI policies overseas, at a time when Trump’s actions on tariffs and security ties have upended transatlantic relations.

French business daily Les Echos, which first reported the US demand late on Friday, said it had been sent out to firms by the US embassy in Paris.

“We inform you that Executive Order 14173, Ending Illegal Discrimination and Restoring Merit-based Opportunities, signed by President Trump, applies to all suppliers and service providers of the US Government, regardless of their nationality and the country in which they operate.

“We would be grateful if you could complete and sign the document in English within five days and return it to us by email. If you do not agree to sign this document, we would appreciate if you could provide detailed reasons, which we will forward to our legal services,” the letter read.

The US president has also continued to tell his advisers that he wants to keep increasing trade measures, and in recent days, he has brought back the idea of a universal tariff that would apply to most imports, no matter which country they come from.

At the time of filing this report, the White House is yet to comment on the development.

The Republican has expressed regret over not implementing broader tariffs during his first term and has blamed advisers for persuading him to pull back.

He has told advisers that tariffs are a win for the United States, bringing back manufacturing jobs and adding trillions in government revenue.

DAILY POST reports that survivors in Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-biggest city, dug with their bare hands on Friday in desperate attempts to save those still trapped, lacking heavy machinery and with authorities absent.

On Saturday in Bangkok, rescue operations continued at the site of the 33-story tower’s collapse, where 47 people were missing or trapped under the rubble – including workers from Myanmar.

The US Geological Service’s predictive modelling estimated that Myanmar’s death toll could exceed 10,000 and losses could exceed the country’s annual economic output.

Myanmar’s junta chief, Senior General Min Aung Hlaing, a day after making a rare call for international assistance, travelled to hard-hit Mandalay near the epicentre of the quake, which brought down buildings and triggered fires in some areas.

“The Chairman of the State Administration Council instructed authorities to expedite search and rescue efforts and address any urgent needs,” the junta said.

Special Adviser to INEC Chairman, Mohammed Kunna, made this known during an online discussion on INEC Regulation and Guidelines for Recall, 2024.

Kunna pointed out that conducting a recall election was similar to conducting three constituency elections.

“Once a petition is received and verified to meet legal requirements, INEC must first conduct a verification exercise at the affected polling units.

“For that verification to happen, we have to use the Bi-Modal Voter Verification System (BVAS) because those who signed the petition must be verified as genuine registered voters in those units.

“Then, INEC needs to establish 50 per cent plus one signature from the constituency.

“After that, we proceed to the final stage: conducting the referendum, which involves a yes or no vote by registered voters in the constituency,” Kunna said.

According to him, the process involved mobilising staff, deploying election materials, transportation, and other resources, much like conducting three senatorial district elections.

Also speaking, the Chief Press Secretary to INEC Chairman, Rotimi Oyekanmi, acknowledged the high cost, stressing that INEC must adhere to the law.

Oyekanmi earlier noted that INEC’s regulations and the Electoral Act specified the process for conducting a recall election.

“The law allows a recall election only if the petitioners meet constitutional requirements, including submitting signatures from at least half of the registered voters in the constituency.

“Once the petition is received, INEC performs a preliminary check and then verifies the signatures.

“The lawmaker facing recall is informed and has the right to deploy agents to observe the process,” he said.

Oyekanmi also addressed the possibility of online voting, stating that the Constitution did not permit INEC to conduct electronic voting.

According to him, it is unfair for the president to suspend Governor Siminalayi Fubara of Rivers State and retain the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike, who are both actors in the political crisis.

Ogbe, an ex-National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, said emergency rule should be avoided at all cost, stressing that it is dangerous and would not be fair.

The former Agriculture Minister said the decision of the president should not overrule that of the people who voted the governor.

He said that there would have been a reconcilation committee to address and iron matters of such out.

“I think that the use or declaration of states of emergency is something that we should avoid as much as possible. It’s a very dangerous trend because it is definitely not going to be always fair and just.

“I must say that the decision of the President should not overrule the vote of the people who made that individual governor. The people of Rivers voted for somebody.

“I suggest that a reconciliation committee should be set up as soon as possible. And that in the future, when such a situation arises, these individuals who are the warring factions should be brought before senior citizens of the state and told the plain truth,” he said.

The Obidient Movement have condemned the gruesome killing of some Northern hunters in Edo State, stressing that Nigerians must not lose their humanity.

The movement described the killing of the hunters as an attempt to sow the seeds of hate, intolerance and division in Nigeria.

The hunters, bearing about 19 locally made firearms, as confirmed by the Inspector-General’s statement on Friday, were said to have been stopped by the vigilantees in the area.

The hunters, who were traveling in Dangote’s truck, were reportedly set ablaze in Utomi, Edo State.

Condemning their death, the movement urged Nigerians to unite against the senseless and needless violence perpetrated by a few undesirable elements.

This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Obidient Movement’s Director Strategic Communications and Media, Nana Sani Kazaure and Tanko Yunusa, National Coordinator of the Movement.

The statement reads: “The recent gruesome killings of some traveling Northern Hunters in Edo state is not only disturbing and heartbreaking but is an act that warrants collective condemnation.

“The victims could have been fathers, brothers, sons, guardians and breadwinners returning home after months of toiling to provide for their loved ones. Their lives cut short by needless violence, only leaves behind a trail of grief and devastation in its wake.

“While we acknowledge and commend the efforts of security operatives in making some arrests and working towards justice, especially for the families of those slain, the question still remains: for how long will Nigerians have to live with such violence in our midst?

“When will we, as a collective, as a Nation decide to stop the bleeding and start the healing process? An injury to one Nigerian should naturally be an injury to every Nigerian.

“This sentiment echoes the need for empathy, unity, and a collective action against such heinous acts that are becoming a daily occurrence in our beloved country, Nigeria.

“We therefore, condemn entirely and in the strongest terms the brutal killings of any Nigerian in any part of the country.

“We in the same vein, call on all Nigerians to unite against senseless and needless violence perpetrated by a few undesirable elements in our society who are bent on sowing the seeds of hate, intolerance and division in our country.

“We must all work towards creating a society that values human life and dignity. We must, as a matter of urgency, begin to show not just the world but we must show ourselves that we value human life and dignity and that we will not stand idly by while innocent lives are lost in the hands of few bad eggs.

“We must work to tell the world that these few bad elements do not represent who we are. They clearly do not represent us.”
