US needs Ukrainian leader who wants peace – Trump’s aide, Waltz

A top adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump, Mike Waltz, said on Sunday that the United States needs a Ukrainian leader willing to secure a lasting peace with Russia.
He added that it was unclear whether Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was prepared to do so.
Waltz made this statement a few days after a contentious Oval Office exchange between Trump, Zelenskyy, and Vice President JD Vance, emphasizing that Washington seeks to establish a permanent peace between Moscow and Kyiv, which would involve territorial concessions in exchange for European-led security guarantees.
“We need a leader that can deal with us, eventually deal with the Russians, and end this war.
“If it becomes apparent that President Zelenskyy’s personal or political motivations diverge from ending the fighting in his country, then I think we have a real issue on our hands,” Waltz said when asked whether Trump wants Zelenskyy to resign.
Similarly, House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested that a different leader might be necessary in Ukraine if Zelenskyy does not comply with U.S. demands.
The extraordinary Oval Office exchange on Friday publicly exposed tensions between Zelenskyy and Trump.
As a result, an agreement between Ukraine and the United States to jointly develop Ukraine’s natural resources was left unsigned and remains in limbo.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday said he was convinced that former U.S. President Donald Trump wanted to see a lasting peace in Ukraine despite a heated exchange with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Friday.
Starmer, speaking on BBC television, said he was uncomfortable watching the meeting between Trump and Zelenskyy, during which the Ukrainian leader was asked to leave after being accused of being ungrateful for U.S. aid to his country.
“I have to say, I’ve spoken to President Trump a number of times. I’ve met him twice … I’m clear in my mind that he does want lasting peace. He does want an end to the fighting in Ukraine,” he said.
It could be recalled that Zelenskyy met with U.S. President Donald Trump on Friday in Washington, D.C., during which both leaders engaged in a heated argument.
Zelenskyy was expected to sign a mineral deal with the U.S. that might have contributed to ending the war between Ukraine and Russia.
During the meeting, Zelenskyy accused Russia of not respecting diplomacy and the ceasefire agreement, which had led to continued loss of life.

Russia hails Trump, scolds Europe for being ‘crucible of war’

Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov on Sunday hailed what he called the common sense of U.S. President Donald Trump’s aim to end the war in Ukraine.
This was as he accused the European powers that have rallied around Kyiv of seeking to prolong the conflict.
According to him, the United States still wants to be the world’s most powerful country, stating that Washington and Moscow would never see eye to eye on everything but had agreed to be pragmatic when interests coincided.
Lavrov, who has been foreign minister for 21 years, said the model of the U.S.-China relationship was the one that should be built between Russia and the United States to achieve mutually beneficial outcomes without allowing disagreements to escalate into war.
“Donald Trump is a pragmatist. His slogan is common sense. It means, as everyone can see, a shift to a different way of doing things.
“But the goal is still MAGA (Make America Great Again). This gives a lively, human character to politics. That’s why it’s interesting to work with him,” Lavrov said.

Ramadan: There is hardship in the land, pay your Zakat – Islamic cleric tasks Muslims

An Islamic cleric, Sheikh Ismaeel Hussein Adekunle Gbamolada, has advised well-to-do Muslims across the country to pay their Zakat as and when due.
Gbamolada noted that this is necessary to reduce the level of hardship in the country.
The Islamic cleric made these declarations while delivering the 1446 AH Ramadan lecture organized by the Ajibode Oke Ona Muslim Community, Ibadan, on Sunday.
DAILY POST reports that the event was attended by the Chief Imam of Ibadanland, Sheikh Abubakar Abdulganiyy Agbotomokere, a former member of the House of Representatives, Barrister Lanre Saheed Agoro, and the Chairman of the Muslim community in the area, Dr. Bayo Busari.
Gbamolada, while speaking on the topic “Zakat: Divine Solution to Economic Hardship,” advised Muslims to pay their Zakat as and when due to help reduce poverty in the country.
He said that this will help alleviate the widespread suffering in the land.
“Those who cannot pay Zakat should pay Sadakat. Nigeria has all the mineral resources to be a good place for all and sundry, but we are still wallowing in poverty.
“Zakat is a commandment from God to all Muslims. People are hungry. When Buhari was in power, we were buying rice below N10,000, but it is now almost N100,000.
“If you want to give Zakat, give a substantial amount of money. This will help reduce the level of poverty in the country. There is too much hardship in the land.
“There is too much hardship; pay your Zakat as and when due. Let us assist ourselves if the government fails us. If we pay Zakat, it will purify our wealth.
“Any stingy man cannot pay Zakat. Also, remember the Islamic clerics who are teaching your children.”
