European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen has said that Europe urgently needs to rearm, stressing that member states must be given the fiscal space to significantly increase defence spending.

Von der Leyen made the statement on Sunday following a meeting in London on support for Ukraine.

She emphasised that Europe must also demonstrate to the United States that it is prepared to defend democracy.

“After a long period of underinvestment, it is now of utmost importance to increase defence investment for a sustained period.

“Member states need greater fiscal flexibility to enable a surge in defence spending,” she said.

British Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Sunday announced a new £1.6 billion ($2 billion) deal that will enable Ukraine to purchase 5,000 air-defence missiles using export finance.

Starmer made the announcement at a summit in London.

According to Britain’s Ministry of Defence, Thales will manufacture the lightweight multirole missiles for Ukraine.

Thales stated that the missiles have a range of more than six kilometres (3.7 miles) and can be launched from various platforms on land, sea, and air.

“This will be vital for protecting critical infrastructure now and strengthening Ukraine in securing the peace when it comes,” Starmer said.

Last week, Russia launched more than 200 drones in an overnight attack, which Ukraine described as the largest such assault since the war began three years ago.

The Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC, has partnered with the Yobe State Council of Traditional Rulers in a significant move to combat corruption in Nigeria.

The collaboration aims to promote transparency, accountability, and ethical values across the country.

To advance this initiative, an ICPC delegation, led by the Resident Anti-Corruption Commissioner for Borno and Yobe States, Mr Linus Gubbi, paid a courtesy visit to the Emir of Fika and Chairman of the Yobe State Council of Traditional Rulers, Dr Muhammad Ibn Abali Muhammad Idris.

Gubbi emphasised the crucial role of traditional institutions in driving behavioural change.

The anti-corruption commissioner urged communities to refrain from celebrating ill-acquired wealth, warning that such practices perpetuate corruption and hinder enforcement efforts.

A statement issued by the Emir’s media aide, Mohammed Abubakar, said the monarch pledged to spread the message to other emirates, district heads, village heads, and ward heads, ensuring a grassroots approach to combating corruption.

The Emir, a renowned security expert, also assured ICPC of his full support in fulfilling its constitutional mandate to create a corruption-free society.

Amotekun: Abiodun urges stakeholders to join hands in fighting insecurity

The Ogun State Governor, Dapo Abiodun, has urged traditional rulers and philanthropists in the state to collaborate in enhancing the performance of security agencies and ensuring a swift response to distress calls.

Abiodun, emphasising that security is the responsibility of all, pledged his administration’s continued support in strengthening the operations of security agencies in the state.

The governor made this statement while commissioning the new Amotekun security outpost, built and donated by the Ologere of Ogere, Oba James Obafemi, in the Ogere axis of Ikenne Local Government Area of the state.

Represented by the Permanent Secretary, Bureau of Cabinet and Special Services, Iskeel Saka, Abiodun noted that the initiative would reinforce the corps’ presence in the community, particularly along the Ogere-Interchange corridor of the Lagos-Ibadan Expressway.

He stated that the facility would enhance their performance, ensure a rapid response to crime-related incidents, and serve as a deterrent to criminal activities, especially in these challenging times for national security.

His words: “Fighting insecurity cannot be left to the state government alone; it requires collaboration and support from all, particularly the private sector, to ensure that insecurity is reduced to the barest minimum in our communities.

“I want to use this symbolic occasion to encourage all indigenes of Ogere and philanthropists in our dear state to emulate Kabiyesi, the Ologere of Ogere, and join hands with the government to improve the performance of our security agencies so that we can all sleep with both eyes closed.

“With Amotekun working in strong synergy with other security agencies in the state, the safety and security of lives and property will be further improved in Ogere, and by extension, across the state.”

Speaking earlier, Oba James Obafemi, the Ologere of Ogere, lamented the rise in insecurity, fuelled by criminals who brazenly commit offences with no regard for human life or property.

He emphasised the need for swift, decisive, proactive, and deliberate measures to protect communities, which motivated his initiative.

“It is our pride and pleasure to have constructed this facility to support Amotekun in their daily efforts to provide security in a community we consider our cradle,” he said.

In response, the Corps Commander of the Ogun State Security Network Agency (Amotekun), Brigadier General Alade Adedigba, stated that tackling insecurity requires a strategic approach and the collaborative efforts of all security agencies, individuals, and stakeholders.

He assured the monarch and the community of unwavering security services, stressing that, in recognition of this rare gesture, Ogere and its environs would receive the highest level of security attention from the Amotekun Corps.
