Leadership of the Christian Association of Nigeria, CAN, has called on all the churches to join in the fight to thwart alleged moves to Islamise Nigeria.
Chairman of CAN in Akwa Ibom State, Bishop Chris Nyong made the call weekend when a delegation from College of Bishops, an arm of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star paid a courtesy call on the leadership of the umbrella body of Christians.
Nyong alleged that there were serious attempts to turn Nigeria into a Muslim country, recounting countries where such moves succeeded.
“Country like Turkey, Morocco, etc, were originally Christian countries but today they have all been Islamised. It should not be so in Nigeria.
“It is very important for all followers of the Lord Jesus Christ to come together to resist moves by certain power groups to Islamise Nigeria, which is a secular state, and it must remain that way.
“His Holiness Olumba Olumba Obu of Brotherhood of the Cross and Star seems to have been standing alone. We all should come together to resist these moves.
“Everyone has the fundamental human rights to worship what he believes in.
“The body of Christians in Nigeria should join forces to promote love, peace and greater unity of Nigeria”, he stressed.
Nyong urged Christiand to eschew acrimony, hatred and factionalism.
Responding, the Dean of BCS College of Bishops, The Patriarch, Shepherd Bassey Imowo commended CAN for working to promote Christianity.
Imowo called on all to love one another and forgive themselves, emphasizing that love conquers all forces.

The insurgent leader also handed over two AK-47 rifles to the military, signaling his willingness to renounce violence.
This was contained in a report by security analyst, Zagazola Makama on his official X handle on Monday.
According to Makama, security sources described the surrender as a major step toward weakening terrorist networks in the state.
In addition to the voluntary surrender, troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA successfully repelled an attempted terrorist attack in Unguwan Baki village, Faskari Local Government Area.
The insurgents, overwhelmed by superior firepower, fled into the forest, abandoning their motorcycles.

Notable Russian parliamentarians have said that a summit of European leaders in London on Sunday had produced no plan to settle the war in Ukraine.
Writing on the Telegram messaging app, the head of the Foreign Affairs Committee of Russia’s upper house of parliament, Konstantin Kosachev, said the only thing Ukraine could count on was an improvement in Russian-US ties.
Kosachev derided the outcome of the London meeting as a desperate attempt to pass off as success the failure of a 10-year policy of inciting Ukraine towards Russia by the same Great Britain and, until recently, the United States.
“Europe has no plan. And if Ukraine should count on something, it can only be on progress (if there is any to come) in Russian-American relations,” he wrote.
According to him, Ukrainian President, Volodymyr Zelenskyy and British Prime Minister, Keir Starmer, who hosted the meeting, cannot fail to understand this.

A Coalition of opposition lawmakers have hailed Governor Siminalayi Fubara’s compliance adhering to the Supreme Court’s judgment regarding the Local Government Area elections.
The lawmakers also commended Fubara’s decision to appoint Heads of Personnel to oversee the councils following the court’s directive, pending the conduct of fresh elections as clear evidence of the governor’s commitment as a democrat.
In a statement issued on Sunday by the opposition Spokesperson, Hon. Ikenga lmo Ugochinyere, the group lauded Fubara for his democratic stance, despite provocations from groups loyal to the former Governor now Minister of federal Capital Territory ( FCT),Nyesom Wike.
The lawmakers described Fubara’s actions as a testament to his respect for the rule of law and his commitment to upholding the principles of democracy.
They added that the illegal decamping of the sacked 27 pro-Wike lawmakers have not been decided as the matter was still pending at the Appeal Court and until a decision was made, the opposition lawmakers would not be recognized.
The coalition also clarified that the 27 pro-Wike lawmakers, who defected from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2023, “remain constitutionally sacked” until higher courts rule on pending cases challenging the legality of their defection.”
“The Court of Appeal and Supreme Court have yet to make pronouncements on their illegal decampment. Until then, their seats remain vacant,” Ugochinyere emphasized.
He further announced that the opposition coalition would address the nation formally after obtaining the Certified True Copy (CTC) of the Supreme Court judgement to outline their position on other contentious issues in the state’s political crisis.
Ugochinyere urged calm among residents, assuring that the opposition remained committed to pursuing legal and peaceful resolutions to uphold constitutional order.

He was speaking to reporters on Sunday evening after earlier talks with other world leaders at a London summit hosted by Sir Keir Starmer, who suggested a coalition of European allies could step up to defend Ukraine and “guarantee the peace”.
Zelenskyy’s statement indicated that he would be prepared to step down as president of Ukraine if his country was allowed to join the military alliance.
Asked by Sky News’ lead world news presenter Yalda Hakim about his previous comments that he could resign if his country becomes a NATO member.
Zelenskyy responded: “I’m exchangeable for NATO.”

The Nigerian Army has eliminated a top Boko Haram commander, Abba Alai, also known as the Amirul Khahid of Alafa, in a coordinated military operation in Garin Fallujah and Gwoza, Borno State.
The development was contained in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on his official X handle on Monday.
According to him, troops of the 21 Armoured Brigade, in collaboration with the 199 Special Forces Battalion and the Civilian Joint Task Force, launched the clearance operation based on credible intelligence that insurgents were regrouping to launch attacks.
According to Makama a military source confirmed that, “Our troops conducted a well-planned assault on the terrorist stronghold, engaging them in a fierce gun battle. Overpowered by superior firepower, the insurgents attempted to flee but suffered heavy casualties, including their commander, Abba Alai,”
During the operation, security forces recovered a cache of weapons, including one AK-47 rifle, a DSHK heavy machine gun barrel, 23 rounds of 7.62mm special ammunition, a radio set, a motorcycle, and assorted medical supplies.
In a separate operation in Gwoza Local Government Area, troops blocked an escape route from Sambisa Forest and engaged Boko Haram fighters in Gobara village.
The encounter forced the terrorists into a chaotic retreat, leading to the recovery of additional weapons, including 57 rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, three AK-47 rifle magazines, and two prototype firearms suspected to be used for terrorist training.
During the operation, troops also rescued an elderly woman who had been held hostage by the terrorists for 10 years.
The Chief of Army Staff, Lt. Gen. Olufemi Oluyede, commended the troops for their bravery and reaffirmed the military’s commitment to eliminating insurgency in Nigeria.
“Our forces remain resolute in the fight against terrorism. We will continue to hunt down these criminal elements and restore lasting peace to the region,” Oluyede stated.

Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau said his priority in talks with King Charles on Monday will be protecting his country’s sovereignty after US President Donald Trump recently suggested making Canada the 51st US state.
He said nothing is more important to his citizens than standing up for their sovereignty and their independence, ahead of the meeting with Charles, who is Canada’s head of state.
Recall that last week, Charles invited Trump to what would be a historic second state visit to Britain, with Prime Minister Keir Starmer handing over the invitation during a meeting before the world’s media in the Oval Office.
“I look forward to sitting down with His Majesty tomorrow, as always we will discuss matters of importance to Canada and Canadians, and I can tell you that nothing seems more important to Canadians than standing up for our sovereignty and our independence as a nation,” Trudeau said.
According to Trudeau, the outgoing prime minister, Trump’s talk about absorbing Canada is a real thing and is linked to the country’s rich natural resources.
