President Donald Trump of the United States on Sunday threatened Iran with bombings and secondary tariffs if Tehran did not come to an agreement with Washington over its nuclear program.

Trump, in a telephone interview with NBC News, said US and Iranian officials were talking but did not elaborate.

“If they don’t make a deal, there will be bombing. But there’s a chance that if they don’t make a deal, that I will do secondary tariffs on them like I did four years ago,” he said.

The Republican, in his first 2017-21 term, withdrew the US from a 2015 deal between Iran and world powers that placed strict limits on Tehran’s disputed nuclear activities in exchange for sanctions relief.

He also reimposed sweeping US sanctions.

Iran, since then, is said to have far surpassed the agreed limits in its escalating program of uranium enrichment.

Tehran has so far rebuffed Trump’s warning to make a deal or face military consequences.

It was gathered that Iran sent a response through Oman to Trump’s letter in which he urged Tehran to reach a new nuclear deal.

Western powers accuse Iran of having a clandestine agenda to develop nuclear weapons capability by enriching uranium to a high level of fissile purity, above what they say is justifiable for a civilian atomic energy program.
According to Tehran, its nuclear program is wholly for civilian energy purposes.

The Eid-el-Fitr festival was overshadowed by rising costs of living, leaving many residents struggling to celebrate in their usual grand style.

The increasing prices of food, fuel, and transportation, coupled with security concerns, dampened the festive mood for many.

Days leading up to Eid, DAILY POST observed markets were filled with shoppers trying to purchase essentials, but many expressed frustration over skyrocketing prices.

“We have never experienced such high costs before. Even the price of a simple bag of rice has doubled, making it difficult for families to afford a proper meal,” said Kuburat Lasisi, a trader at the Ayegbaju market.

Food vendors and market traders also reported a decline in sales as many customers struggled to cope with the economic realities.

“People are buying in smaller quantities. Where they used to buy a full chicken, they now settle for just a few pieces,” said Shina Abdulganiyy, a poultry seller.

The cost of petrol, PMS, remained a major concern for both residents and business owners as many drivers lamented the high price of fuel, which in turn led to increased transportation fares.

“Last year, I could take my family to the village for Eid, but this time, the transport cost is beyond my reach,” said AbdulKareem , a civil servant.

Interstate and mini bus operators also decried the situation, stating that the high fuel prices had severely affected their earnings.

“Passengers are complaining, but we have no choice but to increase fares to keep our businesses running.

“Don’t forget that we also have to service our vehicles and get old and worn out parts replaced in order to meet the high traffic occasioned by the festive season,” said Rasheed Alani, a commercial bus driver.

The rising cost of goods and services also contributed in no small measure as many small business owners struggled to keep their shops open.

“I had to reduce my stock because I can’t afford to buy in bulk anymore. Eid is usually a profitable season for us, but this year has been different,” said Chika Onyeagbor, a clothing vendor. ”

Despite the recent recruitment of personnel into the Osun Amotekun, insecurity still remained a pressing issue, with many residents fearful of travelling to their hometowns.

Also, both the Osun State Police Command and the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, deployed large number of personnel round the state to ensure safety lives and properties of residents and travelers in the state.

Yusuf Akinade, an Osogbo based father of four, said, “We wanted to visit our relatives, but the risk is too high. The roads are not safe, and we don’t want to take chances.”

However, despite these challenges, some residents found ways to celebrate within their means as DAILY POST chasers that many of the malls and public amusement facilities were filled to the brim.

“We may not have much, but we are grateful to be alive and to witness another Eid. We are focusing on prayers and spending time together as a family,” Maryam Ajayi, a mother of three hoped.

Many worshippers were left shocked and disappointed as the Lantoro Eid praying ground in Abeokuta failed to observe the congregational prayer, despite the official declaration of Eid-el-Fitr by President-General of Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs, NSCIA and Sultan of Sokoto, Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III.

DAILY POST reports that the Sultan had announced the sighting of the moon on Saturday, signifying the end of Ramadan and the celebration of Eid-el-Fitr to commence on Sunday.

Sultan’s directive was preceded by the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia’s announcement on the sighting of the moon’s crescent marking the beginning of Shawwal and the end of Ramadan.

DAILY POST reports the Chief Imam of Egbaland, Sa’ad Bamgbola, leads prayers in Lantoro, the state’s central praying ground, where government officials usually gather to pray.

However, some Islam adherents were stranded on Sunday as prayers were not conducted and the Lantoro eid praying ground left deserted as the Egba Muslim leaders led by the Chief Imam snubbed the Sultan’s directive on the Sallah celebration for today.

DAILY POST gathered that they fixed the Eid prayer for Monday.

A retired Assistant Inspector General of Police, AIG, Lanre Bankole, who arrived at Lantoro eid praying ground, had to redirect his convoy when he was told that Sallah prayer had been fixed for Monday.

Similar, one Adeyemi Adams, while expressing his disappointment, blamed the development on lack of unity among Muslim leaders.

He said, “ If we want to go to other mosques, most of them have conducted prayers by 9am. So, we are stranded. We will go back to our various houses.

“It’s simply because the unity is not that strong. Since we have chosen the Sultan of Sokoto to be the Muslim leader in Nigeria, we must follow him.

“Had it been Saudi Arabia had announced sighting of the moon’s crescent but the Sultan says otherwise, I will not be saying this. But they have said the same thing. Then, what’s our problem?

“We should blame our Muslim leaders here for not complying with the person they have solely agreed to be the leader of Islam in Nigeria,” Adams said.

President Donald Trump has threatened to impose secondary tariffs of 25% to 50% on all Russian oil if he feels Moscow is blocking his efforts to end the war in Ukraine.

Trump said the tariffs could start within a month if there is no ceasefire.

The US President told NBC News he was angry and “pissed off” when Russian President Vladimir Putin criticized the credibility of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiyy’s leadership.

Trump also disclosed that he planned to speak with Putin this week.

DAILY POST recalls that Trump had promised repeatedly to end what he calls a “ridiculous” war in Ukraine.

He has focused heavily on the issue since taking office on January 20, holding negotiations in Saudi Arabia recently with a Russian team.

Meanwhile, Putin has suggested that Ukraine could be placed under a form of temporary administration to allow for new elections and the signature of key accords.

The development if implemented could effectively push out Zelenskyy from power as the Ukrainian president.

However, responding to the development, Trump said: “If Russia and I are unable to make a deal on stopping the bloodshed in Ukraine, and if I think it was Russia’s fault. I am going to put secondary tariffs on oil, on all oil coming out of Russia”.

“That would be, that if you buy oil from Russia, you can’t do business in the United States,” Trump said. “There will be a 25% tariff on all oil, a 25-to 50-pointtariff on all oil.”

Trump stated that the tariffs on Russian oil would come within a month without a ceasefire deal.

According to Trump, Putin knows he is angry with him, but said he had “a very good relationship with him” and “the anger dissipates quickly if he does the right thing.”

The immediate younger brother of former Benue State Governor, Chief Samuel Ortom, Mr. Bernard Tyozenda Ortom, will be laid to rest on Thursday, April 3, 2025.

Bernard Ortom passed away on March 19, 2025, at the age of 62.

His family has announced a three-day funeral programme to honor his life and legacy.

In a statement issued on behalf of the family, Sir Robert Faga Ortom outlined the burial arrangements, stating that activities will begin on Tuesday, April 1, with a wake at the deceased’s residence near Rameti School, off Gabriel Suswam Road, Nyorgyungu, Makurdi.

“On Wednesday, April 2, the remains of the late Bernard Ortom will be moved from Bishop Murray Memorial Hospital, Makurdi, to St. Michael’s Catholic Church, Nyorgyungu, for a Requiem Mass scheduled for 9:00 AM,” the statement read.

According to the family, his body will then be transported to Gbajimba, Guma Local Government Area, with stops at his Nyorgyungu and Gbajimba residences before arriving at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Gbajimba, for an all-night wake.

The final funeral Mass will be held at St. Athanasius Catholic Church, Gbajimba, at 9:00 AM on Thursday, April 3. “Following the service, at approximately 11:00 AM, the remains will be conveyed to Tse-Ortom Adorogo, Guma LGA, for interment,” the family statement added.

Born on December 11, 1962, Bernard Ortom worked at the University of Agriculture, Makurdi (now Joseph Saawuan Tarka University) before retiring.

He is remembered for his contributions to education and his dedication to his community.

President Bola Tinubu on Sunday showered encomiums on the Minister of Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, for good performance, expressing the hope that such good works will translate to a victory for the All Progressives Congress (APC) and not the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) which the Minister still officially belongs to, in the FCT election of 2027.

The President spoke at the State House, Abuja, on Sunday, when Wike led a delegation of prominent FCT residents on a traditional Sallah homage to mark the end of Ramadan fasting and the Eid-el-Fitr holiday.

In his remarks, the President described the FCT as ‘Mr Infrastructure’ and listed some of the various initiatives and projects executed by the FCT Minister, stressing that they have translated to better lives for Abuja residents, for which he remains grateful to the Minister.

While appreciating the calibre of persons in the delegation, Tinubu said: “I could see the diversity of men and women here, I must thank the Honorable Minister of FCT. It’s worth it. ⁣It is nothing other than a privilege to be the landlord of every one of us in Abuja, Federal Capital Territory.

That is a very good reflection of our diversity that we must use for our prosperity.”

The President concluded that “ I’m just a custodian of your trust. It’s only Almighty Allah that gives power. And he says, ‘ if I give it to you, you must use it in the righteous way. You must be humane. You must follow my teachings. And do great things. To show that, I granted you that privilege as a temporary article of faith, and I’m the only one who can take it away from you if you don’t know how to use it.”

Addressing State House correspondents after the visit, Wike expressed elation that the President described him as Mr. Infrastructure, saying: “I feel very happy that my boss has confidence in me. If your boss, in public, says that you are doing well, that, of course, is an encouragement for you to continue doing the job that you’ve been assigned.
