Former Head of the Rivers State Civil Service, George Nwaeke, said he would provide evidence of public funds theft under the administration of suspended state governor Siminalayi Fubara to security operatives when called upon.

This is as he accused the Fubara’s administration of misappropriation.

Nwaeke stated this in a press briefing on Saturday, alleging that the theft of public funds under the suspended Rivers governor is mind-boggling.

“I cannot also give all my evidence to the media, some are sensitive. I will give details to the proper authorities when required of me.

“The level of stealing of public funds and assets witnessed in the last two years is mind-boggling.

“I have never experienced it in the history of the state as we also had the highest allocation ever within this period,” Nwaeke said.

Recall that on Friday, during a press conference in Abuja, Nwaeke claimed that Fubara directed Edison Ehie, his Chief of Staff, to burn down the Rivers House of Assembly.

He alleged that he was at the government house when a bag of money was handed over to Edison for that operation, stating that he does not know the amount inside.

Reacting to the claim, Fubara said the former Head of Service had been “compromised” and was being “coerced” to lie against him.

The Niger Republic has withdrawn an international force fighting armed Islamist groups in West Africa’s Lake Chad region as it seeks to shore up security around oil assets at home.

The government said this in a bulletin on state television.

DAILY POST reports that the Multinational Joint Task Force, MNJTF, which also includes soldiers from Nigeria, Chad and Cameroon, has been working to stem the insurgency since 2015.

However, progress has reportedly been hobbled by division and poor coordination, allowing armed groups to flourish across the region’s sparsely populated scrub lands.

At the time of filing this report, MNJTF has yet to comment on Niger’s withdrawal, and it is unclear how the step will affect the mission’s future.

The Lake Chad region has been repeatedly attacked by militant groups, including Islamic State in West Africa and Boko Haram, whose insurgency erupted in northeast Nigeria in 2009 and has killed tens of thousands of people.

Chad, last year threatened to pull out of the MNJTF after about 40 soldiers were killed in an attack on a military base.

And the Niger Republic has become increasingly withdrawn since a military junta overthrew President Mohamed Bazoum in 2023.

Along with Burkina Faso and Mali, neighbouring states where juntas also snatched power in recent years, it withdrew from regional bloc the Economic Community of West African States, ECOWAS, in 2024.

Niger’s junta, which last week announced a five-year transition to constitutional rule, has promised to restore security in the country, whose vast desert north is reportedly crossed by migrants and traffickers.

Obasa while felicitating with Muslims over the completion of the one month Ramadan fast, described the period of Eld-el-Fitri as a period of spiritual revival, that must be used judiciously.

The Speaker, used the opportunity to urge Nigerians at home and in the diaspora to continue supporting and praying for the country and President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

Obasa, who spoke further, emphasised the need to uphold the festival’s inherent values of forgiveness, compassion, charity, and patience beyond this season.

Israel DMW, the logistics manager of Davido, has urged the Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo, to resign over the escalating insecurity in the state.
He made the call against the backdrop of the mob killing of 16 travelling Northern hunters in Uromi, Edo State.

Israel Afeare noted that the state has been plagued by insecurity since the Governor assumed office.

He urged Governor Okpebholo to resign and hand over to his closest opponent at last year’s gubernatorial election, Asue Ighodalo of the PDP whom he claimed was the legitimate winer of the election.

The socialite claimed the ancestors were angry over Ighodalo’s stolen mandate and had plagued the state with insecurity.

The Niger State Government has instructed security agencies to provide comprehensive security measures throughout the state, ensuring a peaceful and successful Eid-el-Fitr celebration.

The state Governor, Mohammed Umar Bago gave this directive while addressing the thousands of Muslim faithfuls that gathered for Eid fitr prayer after observing the two rakaat’s prayers at the Minna Central Eid prayer ground.

Bago who was represented by his Deputy, Yakubu Garba, emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order during the festivities.

He stressed that the state government will not tolerate any excuses for security breaches, particularly in the state capital, Minna.

He urged security agencies to be vigilant and take all necessary steps to prevent any disruptions during the celebrations.

Additionally, Governor Bago appealed to wealthy individuals to support the less privileged and cautioned youths against engaging in any form of violence or mischief during the celebrations.
