The Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, has strongly denied violating the ban on Sallah durbar and other traditional activities, insisting that his actions on Sallah constituted a normal journey from the Eid ground back to his palace.

Unidentified troublemakers reportedly caused chaos as Emir Sanusi returned to his palace after the Eid prayers on Sunday, resulting in the death of one person.

Responding to the disturbances, he stated: “I had returned from the Eid ground to my palace. It was after a safe arrival that I was informed that some hoodlums had attacked vigilante groups.

“I was told that the vigilante groups arrested some of them and took them to Police Headquarters, but on their return, they were also attacked, and one person was reportedly killed. This indicates that someone is determined to create problems in Kano where none exist.”

An aide of the Emir who wished to remain anonymous stated: “Even before the Emir left, a boy reportedly threw a canister along the route he was to take, and he fled, leaving behind his phone and other valuables, which are now with security personnel.

“All these are serious attempts to cause pandemonium and crisis in Kano by certain individuals. The Emir’s movements from home to the Eid ground and back have nothing to do with the banned Sallah traditional festivities, and the police should make extra efforts to apprehend those behind the attack.”

German Chancellor Olaf Scholz stated on Sunday that Europe desires cooperation with the United States, while also asserting that the EU is prepared to respond collectively if Washington forces their hand by imposing tariffs on steel and aluminium.

Speaking at the opening of the Hanover Industrial Trade Fair, which this year featured Canada as its partner country, Scholz also emphasised Canada’s independent status.

This comes after former US President Donald Trump had speculated about annexing Canada and referred to it as the 51st US state.

“We stand by your side. Canada is not a state that belongs to anyone else. Canada is a proud, independent nation,” he declared.

Addressing Trump’s plans to introduce tariffs, the German Chancellor said his response to “my country first” policies was to advocate for more free trade, greater competitiveness, and increased technological sovereignty.

He argued that Europe was neither naive nor weak, and stressed that trade wars are detrimental to all parties involved.

“So I say to the United States: Europe’s goal remains cooperation. But if the US leaves us no choice, such as with the tariffs on steel and aluminium, we, as the EU, will react as one,” he added.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has revealed that he removed the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, from the single treasury account, TSA, to accelerate development.

A statement by presidential spokesperson, Bayo Onanuga, said Tinubu made this announcement when the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, led the Abuja community in paying the president a Sallah homage on Sunday.

Tinubu explained that he removed the FCT from the TSA because the system was hindering infrastructure growth in the nation and required review for impact and progress.

According to the president, Wike embodies diversity within Nigeria.

President Tinubu emphasised that freeing the FCT from TSA restrictions has rapidly catalysed infrastructure improvements, enhanced healthcare services, and increased security measures.

“I remember the day the FCT Minister came to meet me, and he said, ‘Please remove us from the problem of the TSA so that I can accomplish more work and achieve more.’ I said, ‘Show me what you are about to do,’ and he presented his thinking and belief.

“And everything began changing rapidly. I started seeing the opening up of rural areas by the FCT, the resuscitation of abandoned projects, and the completion of the vice president’s official residence, which had been abandoned for years. The FCT rehabilitated healthcare centres, upgraded facilities for schoolchildren, and provided furniture,” Tinubu said.

President Tinubu praised the FCT Minister for demonstrating that liberation from bureaucracy was necessary and for restructuring the FCT public service to allow civil servants to aspire to higher positions and provide leadership.

“We wouldn’t have been able to celebrate if not for the progressive ideas you brought to the FCT. We can now celebrate the innovative ideas brought to the FCT,” President Tinubu said.

He encouraged FCT residents and other Nigerians to look beyond ethnic and religious affiliations in their leadership choices and focus more on results.

“Today, we live in peace, and security is improving. Hunger is decreasing. Food prices are lowering. We can go to the market and do business. And our diversity and belief in ourselves are becoming stronger.

“We are not seeking magic. We are seeking results. We are seeking comfort. We are praying for good health. We are seeking someone who cares,” the president noted.

“The job is not just about Wike or me but everyone. Nyesom Wike is proving the diversity of Nigeria. He strengthened that diversity to develop prosperity, showing us that we are all members of one family, living together in the same house, in different rooms, and under one roof,” He added.

In his remarks, Wike thanked the president for hosting the residents at the State House.

“This visit marks a historic moment as it is the first time the FCT residents can extend our greetings and best wishes to you in person during this blessed period. We are genuinely delighted to be here,” he said.

Wike pledged his loyalty to the president and committed himself to developing the capital city, assuring that the FCT would soon complete many projects.

“Despite our varied backgrounds, we are united in our unwavering support for your administration and the Renewed Hope Agenda,” he added.

The Vice President, Senator Kashim Shettima; National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu; and Minister of Information and National Orientation, Mohammed Idris, attended the ceremony.

Sheikh Abdul-Fattah Enabulele, the Chief Imam of Benin, said on Sunday that God is displeased with Nigerians due to the killings across the country.

DAILY POST reports that the Chief Imam made this statement while speaking to journalists shortly after the Eid prayers at Ikpoba Slope, in Benin City.

Enabulele called on leaders at all levels to ensure justice, fairness and equity, in accordance with the dictates of the Holy Quran and hadiths.

According to him: “God is displeased with Nigerians because of the way we are killing one another. How can we be killing one another? Those who are supposed to protect us are indifferent; they are protecting themselves with security, leaving us exposed.”

He noted that the killings in the country continue due to the absence of justice, as leaders “display a nonchalant and lackadaisical attitude towards the lives and properties of Nigerians they are supposed to protect.”

He said: “People are taking the law into their own hands. Why is there vigilantism now? Because people have been wronged and there is nowhere to seek redress or obtain justice, and because of this, more people are beginning to take the law into their own hands. That is the basic fact and truth.

“I am appealing to Nigerians: we should not kill one another. This vigilantism occurred in Sokoto State, with the killing of Deborah. Now it is happening in our state here. It has also happened in various places. Why?

“No matter the situation, it doesn’t make sense. We need to respect human life; it is sacred. You do not have the right to take a life you cannot create.

“But I am blaming those in authority. They should be responsible, be proactive and should not allow issues to escalate before starting to arrest those suspected of involvement. There should not be double standards in the way we do things.”

He noted that on the Day of Judgement, Almighty Allah will ask leaders how they governed their people.

“If someone commits a crime, do not judge them based on their place of origin or religious affiliation. A criminal is a criminal. Deal with them based on the crime they committed,” he added.

The Chief Imam called on Nigerians to allow the lessons learned during Ramadan to continue to guide them and to avoid reverting to their old ways of life.

He also advised Muslims in the country to conduct themselves well, noting that even if others are misbehaving, they should not emulate them because Allah has given them the Qur’an and the Prophet, the hadiths.

He opined that both are intended to guide them on how to live peacefully with others.

“We should not take the law into our own hands. We should not contravene the laws of the land, and we should not make ourselves a nuisance.

“When you come to a community that is not your own, you should respect the community, study them, observe their cultures and traditions, and respect their way of life, and not come to misbehave and cause problems everywhere,” he said.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB, has urged all candidates who applied for admission through the 2024 Direct Entry, DE, mode using awaiting results from IJMB or JUPEB to urgently visit any approved CBT centre to upload their results as soon as they are released.

This was stated in a press release by JAMB’s spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, on Sunday in Abuja.

Benjamin warned that failure to do so would result in disqualification from consideration for the 2024 DE admission.

According to him, during the 2024 DE registration period, some candidates registered with awaiting results from IJMB and JUPEB but have yet to upload them.

“Please note that no candidate will be considered for admission with awaiting results, similar to the policy for UTME candidates.

“Any application marked as awaiting result that does not comply with this directive will be disqualified from admission consideration.

“It is essential that all candidate credentials are verified to determine their eligibility,” he said.

JAMB’s spokesman added that candidates without uploaded results would be regarded as having none.

He encouraged candidates applying for the 2025 DE to be proactive in ensuring that their awaiting results are uploaded promptly upon release to change their status from Awaiting Results and enhance their chances of admission.
