Russia for the second night in row bombed the city of Kharkiv in northeastern Ukraine, injuring two people, sparking fires and damaging a kindergarten and private houses.
Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the attacks on Kharkiv, Ukraine’s second-largest city, lasted most of the night and hit the city’s largest and oldest district.
“The sixth explosion in Kharkiv,” Terekhov said in a post on the Telegram messaging app at 0255 GMT on Monday.
It was not clear what was targeted in the attacks that came a week after a US-brokered partial ceasefire on strikes on energy and Black Sea infrastructure.
Meanwhile, both sides have accused each other of breaking the moratorium.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy on Sunday said Moscow had fired more than 1,000 drones in the past week and called for a response from the US and other allies.
Russia in turn said Ukraine’s drones attacked energy facilities last week.
Recall that Russia invaded Ukraine in February 2022 and has waged a bloody and brutal three-year war.
Both sides, however, denied targeting civilians, saying their attacks were aimed at destroying each other’s infrastructure crucial to war efforts.
Over the weekend a Russian drone strike on Kharkiv killed two people and wounded 35.
The regional governor of the Kharkiv, Oleh Sinehubov, said on Monday that the overnight attacks followed a late Sunday missile strike on the city of Kupiansk that left three injured and demolished more than 10 houses and a local cemetery.
Russia seized Kupiansk, east of Kharkiv early in the invasion of Ukraine and recaptured by Ukrainian troops later that year.
It has now come under new, intense Russian pressure.
At the time of filing this report, there was no immediate comment from Moscow on the attacks.

Reciprocal tariffs will target all countries – Trump
President Donald Trump of the United States said on Sunday that reciprocal tariffs he is set to announce this week would affect all nations, and not just a smaller group of 10 to 15 countries with the biggest trade imbalances.
Trump stated this while speaking with reporters aboard Air Force One.
He promised to unveil a massive tariff plan on Wednesday, which he has dubbed “Liberation Day.”
The president has already imposed tariffs on aluminum, steel and autos, along with increased tariffs on all goods from China.
“You’d start with all countries. Essentially all of the countries that we’re talking about,” he said.
White House economics adviser Kevin Hassett, while speaking with Fox Business recently, said that the administration’s tariffs focus would be on 10 to 15 countries with the worst trade imbalances, though he did not list them.
It was gathered that Trump sees tariffs as a way of protecting the domestic economy from unfair global competition and a bargaining chip for better terms for the US.
However, concerns about a trade war are unsettling markets and creating fears of a recession in the US
Trump has said he will impose a suite of reciprocal tariffs against nations that charge fees on US exports, promising to match those countries’ duties.
Recall that in February, the Republican signed a memorandum that directed US trade officials to go country by country and put together a list of tailored counter-measures.
Last week, he suggested he might scale back his reciprocal plans, perhaps imposing tariffs in some cases at lower rates than countries charge the United States.

The headquarters of the Republican Party of New Mexico was set on fire on Sunday.
Fire officials in Albuquerque, the largest city in Democratic-controlled New Mexico, were reportedly called to the blaze around 6 am and put it out in five minutes.
In a post on social media, Albuquerque Fire Rescue said the single-story structure suffered damage to its entryway and smoke damage throughout.
According to the Federal Bureau of Investigation, FBI, in a statement, it was leading the investigation to find the those behind the act.
The fire comes after US Immigration and Customs Enforcement, ICE, said it arrested 48 illegal immigrants, 20 of them with criminal convictions, during raids in Albuquerque, state capital Santa Fe and Roswell, New Mexico earlier this month.
The graffiti appeared to equate the white supremacist Ku Klux Klan hate group to ICE, the agency President Donald Trump has tasked to deport millions of illegal immigrants.
At the time of filing this report, has not yet commented on the development.
“Our state leaders must reinforce through decisive action that these cowardly attacks will not be tolerated,” Republican Party of New Mexico Chairwoman Amy Barela said in a statement.
The Democratic Party of New Mexico said it condemned the vandalism of the Republican Party headquarters.
“We firmly maintain that this sort of act has absolutely no place in our democracy. We hope whoever is responsible is found and held accountable,” the state Democratic Party said on social media.
The fire follows the conviction this month of a failed Republican candidate for the New Mexico House of Representatives who carried out drive-by shootings on the Albuquerque homes of Democratic officials during 2022 and 2023.

Finland President, Alexander Stubb on Sunday said President Donald Trump has become impatient with Russia as to the proposed ceasefire with Ukraine.
Stubb addressed the press in London after his trip to the United States where he played golf with Trump and discussed foreign and security policy issues.
The Finnish leader stated that President Vladmir Putin can not be trusted, accusing the Russian leader of slowing the process to reach a truce.
“[Trump] is quite impatient with Russia’s actions, this kind of scheming and delaying regarding the ceasefire,” Finland’s state media YLE quoted.
“I tried to explain that this is completely normal Russian behaviour. First we negotiate something – and then the conditions are changed once again.”
Stubb disclosed that he assured Trump of his country’s and Europe’s “strong support for Ukraine in Russia’s war of aggression.”
The president wants sanctions imposed on Russia for the three-year invasion, saying “There has only been one initiator in this war of aggression.”
He said if Russia does not accept the ceasefire or violates it if finally agreed, a punitive mechanism should be adopted “as an incentive.”
Stubb commended the Finnish-U.S. alliance built over many years, and culminated in Finland’s NATO membership as well as a Defence Cooperation Agreement.
The president will on Monday meet with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer for talks on bilateral relations and other issues including the Russia-Ukraine war and NATO.
