The United States Department of State on Wednesday said American government vessels can now transit the Panama Canal without charge fees.

The Department said this in a tweet via its X account.

“The government of Panama has agreed to no longer charge fees for U.S. government vessels to transit the Panama Canal,”It tweeted.

It said the agreement will save the U.S. government millions of dollars each years.

This is coming after U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio met with Panama’s President Jose Raul Mulino on Sunday during a trip to Central America.

Panama has become a focal point of the President Donald Trump administration.

Trump had accused the Central American country of charging excessive rates to use its passage.

“If the principles, both moral and legal, of this magnanimous gesture of giving are not followed, then we will demand that the Panama Canal be returned to us, in full, and without question,” Trump had said in January.

The European Central Bank, ECB, has warned that the United States’ trade war with China could have a detrimental impact on the 20-member euro zone.

ECB board member, Piero Cipollone, who gave the warning, said interest rates have room to fall further as inflation moderates.

DAILY POST reports that the ECB has lowered borrowing costs five times since June as growth concerns start to trump price worries, and investors see at least three more rate cuts this year in a bid to boost an economy struggling to rebound from two years of near stagnation.

“We all agree there is still room for adjusting rates downwards. We are almost on target…(and) we are still in restrictive territory,” Cipollone said.

He added that higher energy prices and global trade tensions are tugging the ECB in different directions, stressing that there is no sense in committing to any specific move for now, including a widely anticipated and fully priced in cut in March.

According to him, the euro zone economy has not fundamentally changed since December, when the ECB’s projections assumed four rate cuts in 2025, including a move already delivered in a unanimous decision last month.

“The overall understanding of where we are going is there, the fundamentals haven’t changed, so I do not expect a big change in direction. This convergence with the inflation target is coherent with a declining interest rate path,” Cipollone stated.

Inflation inched up to 2.5% last month but the ECB sees it back at 2% sometime this summer after four years above target.

Cipollone argued that the big uncertainty is US trade policy, saying it could hit Europe hard, even before any direct trade barriers on the bloc.

Recall that the US imposed a 10% tariff on all Chinese imports this week, prompting retaliatory measures from Beijing.

Cipollone reiterated that curtailing access to the US would force China to find other markets and it could dump discounted products on Europe, curbing growth and prices.

The suspended Edo State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Dr Samson Osagie has denied committing any financial infraction.

DAILY POST reports that the embattled Commissioner made the denial in the statement while reacting to his suspension by the State Governor, Monday Okpebholo.

Osagie, who vowed to prove his innocence, added that he was never involved in any financial dealing with anyone nor committed any financial infraction of any kind.

The statement reads in part: “My attention has just been drawn to a Government special announcement dated 5th February, 2025 in which I was alleged to have been engaged in financial infractions with the Chairman of the Local Government service commission and therefore suspended.

“Let me state unequivocally that I am not and was never involved in any financial dealing with anyone nor committed any financial infraction of any kind.

“I was also not confronted with the said allegations by anyone before my suspension was announced.”

“I shall be ready, willing, and prepared to defend myself and prove my innocence in order to clear my name and hard earned reputation, which I have laboured to build over the years”, he said.

DAILY POST reported that the State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice was suspended along with Hon Damian Lawani, Chairman of Edo State Local Government Service Commission over allegations of grave official and financial infractions.

A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Umar Musa Ikhilor said the suspension is with immediate effect.

In the statement, the State Governor ordered the setting up of an Investigative Committee to investigate the allegations levelled against the duo and make appropriate recommendations accordingly.

Okpebholo opined that the suspension of the appointees became necessary to enable the government to carry out a thorough investigation into the allegation of financial infractions leveled against them.

He said they are to remain suspended pending the conclusion of the investigation.

DAILY POST recalls that Governor Okpebholo had on January 25, 2025 suspended Mr. Ahmed Musa Momoh, the Executive Director/Chief Executive Officer of the State Flood Erosion and Watershed Management Agency, FEWMA, over alleged insubordination.

The FEWMA boss was suspended over turbaning ceremony and appointment of Chiefs and Village Heads by the Aidenogie of South-Ibie kingdom, a ceremony the governor was said to have suspended from taking place.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule has disbanded two traditional rulers involved in a violent dispute over resource control.

This move is to restore peace in the Afo chiefdom of Udu Ward and Mararaba Udege, .

The Governor made the announcement on Wednesday while addressing journalists after inspecting the damage caused by the recent clashes in Nasarawa Local Government Area.

The violence, which erupted over leadership and control of community resources, left three people dead and displaced many residents.

Stating the importance of peace, the governor urged the Afo people to embrace unity and reconciliation instead of resorting to violence.

“Lack of understanding among ourselves is often the root cause of crises. This community belongs to the Afo people, but it is also home to other tribes.

“It is time for us to accept one another and work towards the development of the area,” Governor Sule stated.

To ensure a peaceful transition, the governor announced plans to set up a committee, led by a former military officer, to oversee the affected communities and facilitate the selection of a new traditional ruler.

He also issued a stern warning to the rival factions against further violence, stressing that the government would not tolerate actions that threatened the peace and stability of the region.
