A violent chieftaincy dispute has claimed the lives of two people and left several homes in ruins in the Odu electoral ward of Maraba Udege Development Area, Nasarawa State.

The dispute, which has persisted for over three years, centers on a land ownership disagreement between the Afo people of Angwan Duse and Angwan Kasa communities. Despite previous efforts to mediate, the crisis remains unresolved.

In the wake of the latest violence, Governor Abdullahi Sule visited the affected communities to assess the extent of the damage and seek lasting solutions.

Addressing the contending families from the Odu and Embu communities, Governor Sule issued a stern warning against further hostilities. “This crisis has lingered for too long. We must put an end to this senseless destruction and loss of lives,” he stated.

The governor also announced plans to appoint an administrator to oversee the area and foster peace-building efforts.

He called on community stakeholders to view Mararaba Udege as a collective heritage of the Afo people, urging them to set aside communal divisions for the sake of development.

Governor Sule also highlighted the strategic importance of the area, noting its growing significance due to ongoing mining activities.

“We need peace here to harness the opportunities that lie within this region,” he emphasized.

A statement from the chairman of the group, Isah Abbas Ahmed, said there was no time permission was granted to El-Rufai to use the group’s name, while improperly using it as a hashtag at the end of his write-up, in which he attacked his successor, Governor Uba Sani.

“Our attention has been drawn to a publication by one Nasir El-Rufai, in which he vehemently opposes His Excellency, the Governor of Kaduna State, while improperly using our name as a hashtag at the end of his write-up,” the statement said.

“We want to make it clear that the name Concerned Kaduna Citizens, as used by Nasir El-Rufai, does not imply membership, endorsement, or authorisation by the actual group.

“Any views, opinions, or statements expressed by Nasir El-Rufai in relation to this name are solely his own and do not represent the position of the group, its members, or well-meaning Kaduna citizens.

“The group disclaims any association, responsibility, or liability for the use of its name by this individual, who is not recognised as a member.”

Oyinlola made the commitment during a courtesy visit to Governor Caleb Mutfwang at the Government House in Little Rayfield, Jos, the state capital.

According to him: “For decades, clashes between herding and farming communities in Plateau have led to significant loss of lives and property, with both sides blaming each other for the violence.”

To restore confidence between the warring factions, the new GOC said he would approach the situation with fairness and justice, assuring the governor and the people of Plateau of his commitment.

Oyinlola stressed the need to sustain and build upon previous achievements to ensure lasting stability in the Joint Operations Area, which covers Plateau and its neighbouring states, while acknowledging the efforts of his predecessor.

He added that the priority is not just to maintain the existing peace in the state but to strengthen it, ensuring that all parties feel secure and supported.

Ogun State government, in collaboration with the Immunisation Plus and Malaria Progress by Accelerating Coverage and Transforming Services (IMPACT) Project Implementation Unit, on Wednesday, held a stakeholders’ engagement on the project’s contributions to the state’s health sector.

The meeting, which was held in Abeokuta and chaired by the Commissioner for Health, Tomi Coker, had in attendance the 20 local government chairmen, health secretaries, development partners, religious leaders, civil society organizations, ward development committee, among others.

DAILY POST reports that the health intervention project is supported by the World Bank, in collaboration with the federal government, Federal Ministry of Health, and National Primary Healthcare Development Agency, whose objective was aimed at reducing under-five mortality rate and improving access to quality healthcare services beneficial to children and women in selected States.

The commissioner maintained that the meeting was organised to brief stakeholders on the project, adding that it was designed to strengthen primary healthcare service delivery across the States, including revitalisation of health centers, especially in the underserved areas where access to health services was limited.

Coker disclosed that the State was set to recruit 400 Senior Community Health Workers (CHEWs) to complement the workforce at the primary healthcare centres across the State.

Speaking on the project’s goals, the project manager, IMPACT, Dr. Kofoworola Olajide, explained that it was to ensure a 40 percent reduction in child mortality rates by improving immunisation coverage and other prevention and treatment in the State.

Olajide noted that part of the project was the revitalisation of 75 primary healthcare centres across the 20 LGAs in the State, which was recently awarded to successful contractors, training of healthcare workers, providing the facilities with laptops for quality health data, assuring that the IMPACTS project would improve the health indices of the State.

Earlier in his opening remarks, the Executive Secretary of Ogun State Primary Health Care Development Board, Elijah Ogunsola, while reiterating the commitment of the Abiodun-led administration to revitalise the health sector by providing quality health services, added that the IMPACT project would help in achieving a universal health coverage and improve the well-being of the residents.

He noted that the meeting served as a platform to familiarise participants with the project’s objectives, scope, and timelines, towards ensuring that all parties involved were on the same page and working towards a common goal of delivering top-notch healthcare services to the people of Ogun State.

In his goodwill message, Commissioner for Budget and Planning, Olaolu Olabimtan, emphasised the importance of collaboration and effective communication in achieving the government’s health sector objectives, particularly at the grassroots level.

He asserted that through fostering strong partnerships and open communication, the government aims to create a healthier environment for its citizens, particularly in rural areas.

Speaking on behalf of the chairmen, Chairman of Sagamu Local Government Area, Ogbeni Odulate, commended the state government and IMPACT Projects for for the initiative, while highlighting its potential to improving healthcare delivery at the grassroots level.

“I welcome President Trump’s bold plan, Gaza residents should be allowed the freedom to leave and emigrate, as is the norm around the world,” Katz said.

Asked who will take in the Palestinians, Katz said it should be countries who have opposed Israel’s military operations in Gaza.

“Countries like Spain, Ireland, Norway, and others, which have levelled accusations and false claims against Israel over its actions in Gaza, are legally obligated to allow any Gaza resident to enter their territories,” he said.

Recall that Trump drew rebukes on Wednesday over his plan for Gaza from world powers such as Russia, China and Germany, which said it would foster new suffering and new hatred.

Similarly, regional heavyweight Saudi Arabia rejected the proposal outrightly and Jordan’s King Abdullah, who will meet Trump at the White House next week, said on Wednesday that he rejected any attempts to annex land and displace Palestinians.

Netanyahu stated this on Wednesday in an interview with Fox News.

Netanyahu, however, did not explicitly talk about Trump’s idea of the United States taking over the Gaza Strip but backed the idea of allowing Gazans who want to leave to leave.

“I mean, what’s wrong with that? They can leave, they can then come back, they can relocate and come back. But you have to rebuild Gaza,” he said.

The Israeli prime minister said he did not believe Trump suggested sending US troops to fight Hamas in Gaza or that Washington would finance rebuilding efforts.

“This is the first good idea that I’ve heard. It’s a remarkable idea, and I think it should be really pursued, examined, pursued and done, because I think it will create a different future for everyone,” he added.
