Ogun automobile technicians protest killing of three members by truck drivers
Members of the Nigeria Automobile Technicians Association, in Ogun State, have protested the death of three of their colleagues by a truck driver on Wednesday evening in Kemta area of Abeokuta.
The technicians on Thursday, blocked the recently constructed Ajebo/OGTV motorway and promised to never permit truck drivers use the route until there is a tangible remedy for the ongoing loss of lives on the axis.
DAILY POST reports that on January 8, a truck conveying granite stone crushed a young man identified as Jelili Soretire to death on the same Ajebo road,
Jelili was riding on his bike, on his way to deliver a repaired car door to a customer when the truck rammed into him at the failed portion of the road near Kemta Housing Estate, adjacent to the Eco Gas Station in Idi-Aba, Abeokuta.
Speaking to newsmen, the Ajebo Mechanic village unit Chairman of NATA, Comrade Saheed Arulogun said, between December and first week of February 2025, not less than five souls had been lost to the alleged cruelty of the truck drivers on the road
Arulogun said, “We are out today to express our sadness and frustration over these truck drivers that have continued to cause avoidable loss of lives on this Ajebo/OGTV road.
“Last night, at about 6:30pm, one of the truck drivers ran over three of our members who closed from work and were on motorcycle going home.
“The accident happened around Kemta and that was the end of these precious souls. On December 27, one of these truck drivers killed a staff of Federal Medical Centre and even in January another person was killed. We are tired of these senseless killings.
“These are human beings, breadwinners in their respective homes, this must not be allowed to continue.
Arulogun while insisting that the truck drivers are not the only ones plying the road, urged the state government to restrict movement of trucks to 11pm in the night just as the immediate governor, Sen Ibikunle Amosun did while he was in power.
Also speaking the chairman of Motor Spare parts and Engine Oil Sellers in the Mechanic village, Rabiu Nurudeen, said “We are all tired of these terrible killing of our people by these truck drivers. The truth is that these drivers are so reckless, they intimidate other road users and feel they are above the law.
“The government must intervene in this matter and call the truck drivers to order. The government should also help to fix a bad portion of the road around Kemta which can also be a factor causing this accident”.

Governor Ahmadu Fintiri of Adamawa State has installed the new paramount ruler of the Yungur speaking people, charging him to curtail conflicts between farmers and herders in his domain.
Giving the Staff of Office to the Gubu Yungur, Johnson Matalo in Dumne on Thursday, the governor also urged the new king to direct the youths of the chiefdom away from restiveness.
In his speech during the presentation of Staff of Office to the Gubo Yungur, Fintiri told the paramount ruler to priorities security, justice, fairness, equity, tolerance and solidarity within the chiefdom.
“I call on Gubo Matalo to ensure that reports of herder/farmer conflicts in the area are brought to the barest minimum and indeed provide a model of harmonious co-existence for others to emulate,” the governor said.
He further charged the new king to design measures of mobilising the talented youths in his domain away from drug abuse, indolence, crime and other vices.
In his acceptance speech, the Gubo Yungur assured Governor Fintiri that he would lead with justice and humility.
The Walin Adamawa, Alhaji Abdulkadir Mbamba who represented the Lamido Adamawa on the ocassion, wished the Gubo a successful reign.
Other speakers at the event commended the state government for granting the Yungur people their long-sought chiefdom.
DAILY POST reports that the coronation of the Gubo Yungo came as the second in seven scheduled coronation ceremonies for the seven chiefdoms and emirates that the state government created last year.
The Fufure Emirate was inaugurated on Thursday, February 5, now leaving five more such coronation ceremonies, the next being in Gombi, scheduled for Saturday, February 8.

Ebonyi: NUT declares indefinite strike in Seven LGAs over unpaid salaries
The Ebonyi State chapter of the Nigerian Union of Teachers, NUT, has declared an indefinite strike in seven local government areas in the state.
The strike action, according to the union, is due to non payment of three months salaries to some teachers in the affected local government area.
A statement issued on Thursday by the union’s secretary, Bassey Asuquo, listed the affected local government areas as Ebonyi, Edda, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ivo, Ishielu and Ohaukwu.
The statement reads, “Sequel to our earlier notice on mobilization for industrial strike action, we have thoroughly reviewed the compliance of local government chairmen regarding the clearance of our members’ salaries.
“As of the close of work today, February 5, 2025, we acknowledge that certain local government areas have cleared the salaries of our members.
“However, we regret to inform you that several local government chairmen have failed to clear the backlog of our members’ outstanding salaries.
“In response to this non-compliance, we hereby declare indefinite strike action in the following Local Government Areas: Edda, Ebonyi, Ezza South, Ezza North, Ishielu, Ivo and Ohaukwu.
“All our state and branch officers in the affected local government areas are instructed to adhere strictly to this directive and ensure the immediate enforcement of the strike action from 12:00am on Thursday 6th February, 2025.
“This includes organizing and maintaining solidarity picket lines and monitoring the Compliance of the strike action across the affected localities”, the statement said.
The Union noted that failure of the local government chairmen to meet their obligations to its members is unacceptable and vowed not relent until its demands are met.
“We call on all members to remain steadfast and continue their support for the strike action.”

Fountain University, Osogbo, has raised alarm regarding an alleged illegal encroachment on its land at the Agric Farm Settlement Area of Oke-Osun, Osogbo.
The university described the development as unlawful and called for urgent intervention.
In a statement signed by the Registrar, Sheriff Adenekan, on Thursday, the institution appealed to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, the Minister of Police Affairs, and the Inspector General of Police to intervene in the matter.
It also urged well-meaning Nigerians to support its efforts to reclaim the land which is 124.349 hectares.
The university stated that it legally acquired the land under Yoruba Native Law and Custom in 2005 with the involvement of Osogbo community leaders and the Osun State Government.
The statement said, “The land is covered by a Certificate of Statutory Right of Occupancy issued on 5 January 2006. We had been in peaceful possession of the land until October 2024, when a group of individuals allegedly forcefully entered the property.
“It was very shocking when certain individuals suddenly stormed the land and forcefully entered same in a very violent manner.”
The university said the alleged land grabbers removed signposts, vandalised properties, and started laying out the land for sale.
It further stated that despite reporting the matter to the police, some of its staff members and a contractor were instead arrested and prosecuted.
“The university reported the incident to the nearest police station, and the matter eventually reached the Police 11th Zonal Headquarters in Osogbo,” the statement added. “But to our disappointment, our staff were arrested while these hoodlums continue selling the land illegally.
“We had petitioned the Force Headquarters in Abuja on 27 November 2024, but had yet to receive any response. We are worried over the lack of action against those allegedly selling the land.”
The institution clarifying that there was no court ruling invalidating its title to the land, added that the registration of the university with various government institutions is premised on legal documents, including the Certificate of Occupancy.
It urged the public to be cautious and warned against purchasing land from unauthorized persons.
“Any individual or organisation attempting to buy any part of the land should exercise due diligence. Any such transaction is illegal, and the university disclaims any liability or compensation,” the statement emphasised.
While calling on security agencies to take swift action, the university assured that it will continue to pursue legal means.
“We urge law enforcement agents, particularly the police, to uphold justice and protect our land. As an academic institution, we remain committed to legal and peaceful measures, but we cannot allow criminals to destroy our property unchecked,” the statement concluded.
The university reiterated its determination to safeguard its land and warned that it would pursue all legal avenues to ensure that justice prevailed.

The outgone Commander, of the Nigerian Navy Ship, NNS BEECROFT, Commodore Rafiu Oladejo, has said that a total of 265 bags of cannabis sativa was seized and handed over to the appropriate authorities in 2024.
Oladejo said this on Thursday during his send-off parade as the Base commander, which was held at NNS BEECROFT parade ground, Apapa, Lagos.
NAN reports that Oladejo assumed duty as the NNS Commander on March 14, 2024, and has been succeeded by Commodore Paul Nimmyel.
Oladejo added that the Base intercepted and recovered a total of 67 stowaways from different overseas-bound ships, with the most recent being eight persons found onboard MSC KATYANI on January 20.
“193 bags of cannabis sativa weighing 7,720kg was intercepted at Badagry in March 2024, and 72 bags of the same substance weighing 2,880kg at Ilashe in October 2024.
“Furthermore, over 18 large wooden boats laden with foreign parboiled rice, petroleum products and contraband items were arrested and handed over to appropriate prosecuting agencies,” he said.
The commander said these efforts as well as the operational activities of the Base were conducted in line with the Chief of the Naval Staff (CNS) Vice Adm. Emmanuel Oghalla’s Strategic Directive 2023-6.
He said the directive was tailored toward the attainment of Western Naval Command’s key operational priorities and ensuring security and prosperity of the nation.
“Under my command, NNS BEECROFT played a crucial role in promoting maritime safety and security as it promptly responded to several distress calls from mariners.
“The most recent being the search and rescue of MV MAMALUCK offshore Lekki on Jan. 29, 2025.
“Also, the Base remained unrelenting in its efforts at curtailing the menace of sea robbery, illegal oil bunkering, pipeline vandalism, smuggling and other crimes within the Base’s area of operations,” Oladejo said.
