There is no end in sight to the controversy trailing former Rivers State governor Rotimi Amaechi’s recent political comments as the Reformed Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria, RAYCN, has accused him and some other opposition politicians of plotting to destabilize President Bola Tinubu’s government.

It would be recalled that, at a conference on strengthening democracy in Nigeria on January, Amaechi said Nigerians must brace up and be willing to make sacrifices if they are to take power from Tinubu.

Amaechi, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress, APC, who served as Minister of Transportation during the government of ex-President Muhammadu Buhari, stressed that Tinubu would not give up power easily, and as a result, the people should be prepared for a struggle.

“The only way Ibrahim Shekarau (ex-Kano State governor) became governor was because people lined up. It happened in Ghana before the election of the last President. Two days, a lot of us were called to intervene. But why did they do that? The people were ready to die.

“You are talking and abusing everybody. Nobody has power and will give it to you — not even me. If you want a pastor as President, go and get one. The politician is there in Nigeria to steal, maim, and kill to remain in power.

“If you think Tinubu will give it to you, you are wasting your time,” Amaechi said.

Responding to the comment, the Presidency, through the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Public Communication, Sunday Dare, accused Amaechi and other critics, including former Kaduna State governor Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, of heating up the polity.

Further reacting to the development at a press briefing in Abuja on Thursday, the Reformed Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria, RAYCN, raised concerns over an alleged plot by Amaechi and former Sokoto State governor Attahiru Bafarawa, to destabilise Tinubu’s administration.

Speaking through its national president, Bilal Abdullahi, the Arewa group alleged that Amaechi and Bafarawa are working with other disgruntled elements to undermine Tinubu and his government.

Specifically, the politicians were accused of plotting to orchestrate massive protests against Tinubu across the North-West, starting from Bafarawa’s home state, Sokoto.

Urging relevant security agencies to investigate the alleged plot, the group claimed that the activities of Amaechi and the others threaten national security.

The Reformed Arewa Youth Council of Nigeria in the same vein urged youths, religious organisations and lovers of peace and democracy to condemn the alleged plot and support Tinubu’s administration in its efforts to reform the country.

“Their intention and their several meetings is aimed at intimidating the government of President Tinubu and the various organs of government, and make the citizens feel that the government and its various organs are not doing enough to take the people to prosperity.

“This is a matter of utmost state security concern. We cannot fold our arms until we are submerged or over awe by their evil machination and subterfuge.

“It is clear that ever since their incontrovertible defeat at the polls by President Bola Tinubu, these elements have not hidden their hate and disdain for the person of the President and the various organs of government.

“It is however unfortunate that this hatred and disdain is pushing them to act against the Office of the President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces and becoming direct threat to our democracy and the rule of law.

“They must consequently be stopped with all might and not be allowed to go further, to serve as deterrence to others.”

DAILY POST reports that securing land to build a house, especially in and around the state capital, Yola, is a difficult task due to the activities of land grabbers, who most often sell the same plot of land to several buyers.

Disturbed by the trend, the commissioner for land and survey pledged to end land racketeering and such unlawful practices.

“I’m going to supervise the process (of land issuance) myself,” the commissioner vowed, speaking specifically amidst allegations that some influential individuals in Gombi LGA are planning to hijack land approved by Governor Ahmadu Fintiri for allocation to community members in Guyaku district.

The commissioner said he would personally supervise the allocation process to ensure justice is served to all community members.

He also denied claims that private surveyors will be used for the project, assuring that his ministry would handle the design and plot allocation with fairness.

TUC rejects Nigerian Govt’s plan to introduce toll gates on selected federal roads

The Trade Union Congress, TUC, has opposed plans by the Federal Government to toll selected federal roads in the country as a means of revenue generation.

President of TUC, Festus Osifo condemned the policy on Thursday, while presiding over the 1st Quarter 2025 National Administrative Council, NAC, of the union in Abuja.

Osifo wondered why the Federal Government initiates policies that concern the citizens without due consultations with relevant stakeholders.

He said it is annoying that most of the roads which are unpaved, dilapidated and riddled with potholes should be open for collecting tolls.

“The NAC deliberated on the proposed introduction of toll gates on selected federal roads and strongly condemned it in its entirely.

“While we acknowledge that tolling is a globally recognized method of generating revenue for road maintenance, it is unacceptable to impose tolls on roads that are unpaved, dilapidated, and riddled with potholes.

“The NAC views this as an insult to Nigerians, who are being asked to pay tolls on roads that are in total disrepair. Our highways are death traps unsafe, abandoned, and filled with potholes.

“Rather than fulfilling its responsibility to fix and maintain these roads, the government is resorting to shameless extortion.

“The Congress, therefore, demands that all roads earmarked for tolling must first be fixed, properly tarred, and repaired to international standards before any discussion on tolling can be entertained.”

Although the Federal Government recently debunked plans to increase electricity tariff by 65 percent, TUC said it was alarming that the government even considered the hike in the first instance.

Osifo lamented that the previous increment already inflicted severe hardship on citizens.

He said, “This proposed increase is not only ill-timed but also a deliberate act of economic oppression against Nigerians, who are already struggling under unbearable economic conditions.

“The improved service quality promised during the last tariff hike, particularly for consumers under the so-called “Band A” category, has not been realized. Most consumers, regardless of their tariff band, continue to live in perpetual darkness”.

TUC observed that the root cause of escalating prices and galloping inflation was the devaluation of the Naira.

Going down memory lane, Osifo said in February 2024, the TUC addressed a world press conference where it clearly stated that the excessive devaluation of the Naira was the primary cause of rising inflation and the continuous increase in the prices of goods and services.

He said the Congress also warned that the trend would worsen inflation in 2024, impacting virtually every sector of the economy and severely affecting the social and economic well-being of Nigerian workers and the masses if the solutions it canvassed were not adopted.

“Twelve months later, our position remains unchanged, as the symptoms of this root cause have manifested clearly.

“These include the skyrocketing prices of essential goods, the escalating costs of social services, the proposed hike in telecom tariffs, the increase in electricity tariffs (with plans for further increments), the rising prices of petroleum products amongst others.

“The TUC remains focused on addressing the root cause of these economic challenges rather than merely reacting to the manifested symptoms.

“To this end, the TUC demands a better foreign exchange (FX) management regime from the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) as the naira is currently undervalued, as confirmed by both local and international experts.”

He warned that these policies if not reviewed to favour the citizens may compel the TUC to mobilise for mass protest.

“The NAC, on behalf of the Congress, strongly advises the government to refrain from introducing policies that would further exacerbate the current economic hardship faced by hardworking Nigerians.

“If the administration insists on implementing these policies, the TUC will have no choice but to mobilize the working class, civil society, and the oppressed masses for a nationwide action. This level of exploitation is unacceptable. A stitch in time saves nine.”

In the letter, Barrister Dan Abdullo requested the Assembly to take action against Governor Abba’s decision to grant an additional two years of service to certain government employees, including the Accountant of the State House of Assembly, the Head of Civil Service in Kano, and some staff members in the state’s judiciary, despite the law stipulating that civil servants must retire once they reach 60 years of age or have 35 years of service.

In his statement, Shawai explained that this is not the first time such a situation has occurred. According to him, even though various organizations have criticized the decision, with some taking the matter to court in search of an interpretation, he stated that this will not change the government’s stance.

Barrister Dan Abdullo, in his letter, claimed that the law the governor relied on violates Nigeria’s Constitution and the National Labor Act.
