The Trade Union Congress of Nigeria (TUC) has vowed to “down tools,” arguing that citizens are “feeding from hand to mouth” following the recent hike in telecom tariff.
Festus Osifo, the President of TUC, made this known when he appeared on Channels Television’s *
Politics Today on Thursday, blaming the hike on mismanagement of foreign exchange, which he believes the government can handle easily.
e said the TUC is not begrudging the telcos, knowing very well that the socio-economic landscape they operate in has changed dramatically, but insisted that the government has the responsibility to ensure that the economic outlook of the country is stable for businesses to thrive.
According to him, “Government has the tools and wherewithal to be able to manage the landscape to ensure that the cost of doing business goes down. And one of the ways is that exchange rate because that is the root cause of the problem.”
Asked what ultimatum they are giving to the Nigerian government, he added, “The NAC [TUC, which is like the National Working Committee] has met today. After that, we’ll have the Central Working Committee meeting, and we also have the NEC.
“So at the NEC, we’ll take the final decision. So the NAC was the one that met today.
“All we are saying is that if you allow your currency to slide, it will affect all of us.”
He added, “We are completely apolitical. For one, I don’t belong to any political party; I’ve said that severally, so we look for what is in the best interest of the Nigerian workers and Nigerians in general.
“We started shouting about this early last year; if our exchange rate is better managed, at the end you are going to see that there is no need for that increment.”
Asked if the TUC is proceeding with an industrial action, he said, “Absolutely,” adding that they will “down tools and go to the streets.”
He said the NEC of TUC has the responsibility to give a date for the strike.

Britain on Thursday said it would revoke the accreditation of a Russian diplomat, in retaliation to a similar move made by Moscow last year.
Russia had in November said that it was expelling a British diplomat for spying, though London denied the accusation.
In a statement on Thursday, Britain’s Foreign Office said that it had summoned the Russian ambassador to announce its decision, saying it was in response to Russia’s unprovoked and baseless decision to strip the accreditation of a British diplomat in Moscow in November.
“Any further action taken by Russia will be considered an escalation and responded to accordingly,” the statement added.
According to the statement, which did not name the British diplomat or the Russian official whose accreditation is due to be revoked, Britain will not stand for intimidation of our staff in this way, calling its decision a reciprocal action.
The Russian embassy in London has not yet commented on the development.
DAILY POST gathered that Relations between Britain and Russia have plunged to post-Cold War lows since the start of the Ukraine war.
Britain has joined successive waves of sanctions against Russia and provided arms to Ukraine.

The wife of the Ebonyi State Governor, Mrs Mary-Maudline Nwifuru, has said that the prevalent rate of Female Genital Mutilation, FGM, has dropped by 54% in Ebonyi State.
Mrs. Nwifuru made the disclosure during a road walk to commemorate the 2025 International Day of Zero Tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation and Cutting. The event was organized by the Governor’s wife’s pet project, ‘Better Health for Rural Women, Children, and Internally Displaced (BERWO), in collaboration with the Ministry of Women Affairs and other development partners.
During the road walk, the wife of the Governor, represented by the Team Leader of BERWO, Mrs. Nkechi Echiegu, said the cultural menace had reduced drastically and thanked development partners for their collaborative efforts.
Speaking on the theme “Stepping up the Pace: Strengthening Alliances and Building Movements to End FGM,” the wife of the Governor called on traditional rulers, stakeholders, and birth attendants to work collectively to achieve zero tolerance for Female Genital Mutilation.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs Felicia Nwankpuma, represented by her Head of Department, Mrs Roseline Orji, stated that joint alliances with community and religious leaders would help reduce the harmful practice.
UNFPA representative Kosarachi Nwite and the Coordinator of the Gender-Based Violence Taskforce, Mrs. Faithvin Nwanchor, promised their commitment to ensuring the continuous decline of FGM, describing it as a severe violation of human rights affecting women and girls.
However, offenders of this harmful cultural practice have been advised to desist to avoid being prosecuted under the State Violence Against Persons Prohibition law.

A statement by the US military said the aircraft, which was contracted by the US military, had been carrying out intelligence and surveillance support.
“The aircraft was providing intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance support at the request of our Philippine allies. The incident occurred during a routine mission in support of U.S.-Philippine security cooperation activities.
“We can confirm no survivors of the crash. There were four personnel on board, including one U.S. military service member and three defense contractors,” the statement read.
According to a defense official, the four crew members; the Marine and three defense contractors were conducting a surveillance mission from a contracted Beechcraft twin-engine Super King Air 350 when the aircraft crashed.
The cause of the crash is under investigation.
