United States Attorney General, Pamela Bondi and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) have declassified and released files related to convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein.
The files provide an insight into the sexual exploitation of more than 250 underage girls at Epstein’s homes in New York and Florida, among other locations.
A statement on Thursday by the Department of Justice said the first phase of files largely contains documents that have been previously leaked but never released in a formal capacity by the government.
Bondi said noted that the Department is following through on President Donald Trump’s “commitment to transparency and lifting the veil on the disgusting actions of Jeffrey Epstein and his co-conspirators.”
The first phase of the files, according to the Attorney General, “sheds light on Epstein’s extensive network and begins to provide the public with long overdue accountability.”
In his remark, FBI Director Kash Patel said the agency is entering a new era, one that will be defined by integrity, accountability, and the unwavering pursuit of justice.
Stressing that there will be no cover-ups, no missing documents, and no stone left unturned, Patel said anyone from the prior or current Bureau who undermines the promise will be swiftly pursued.
“If there are gaps, we will find them. If records have been hidden, we will uncover them,” Patel continued, assuring that everything uncovered will be fully assessed and transparently disseminated to the American people.
Bondi has directed the FBI to deliver the remaining documents to the Department on Friday and has tasked Director Patel with investigating why the request for all documents was not followed.
The Department of Justice expressed its commitment to transparency and to release the remaining documents upon review and redaction to protect the identities of Epstein’s victims.

The EFCC boss, who spoke at the 38th Anti-Corruption Situation Room in Abuja, explained that the substantial gifts, which included cheques and drafts, were sent to him by ministers, directors, MDAs and other high-ranking government officials.
Olukoyede noted that he was serving as the Secretary of the commission at the time he buried his mother.
Recounting how he received the offers, Olukoyede narrated that upon his return to his family home in Ekiti State prior to the burial, his gate man presented those checks to him.
According to him, after reviewing the cheques, he decided to return them.
The EFCC chairman narrated, “I lost my mother in the year 2019 (in Ekiti State). We went for the funeral. I was the secretary of the EFCC then. People came. So I went to my place a day before the funeral service.
“By the time I got to my small compound, which I built several years ago before I joined the EFCC, I saw about 17 cows in my compound, including pregnant ones.
“When I got home, my gate man presented a box to me and inside it, I saw so many cheques and drafts from ministers, permanent secretaries, directors, DGs of agencies, etc.
“And so, I went in and showed it to my wife. She said, ‘Praise God’. I said, ‘Praise God for what?’ By the time we put all the cheques together, it counted close to N500m.
“I did the burial in September 2019. By July 2020, I was under investigation. Now, assuming all those cheques were paid into my account as traditional gifts and some of the MDAs that we were investigating in the EFCC, some of their directors and their DGs and their ministers sent cheques to me.
“Ordinarily, I mean for burial, some gave me one million, N20m and all of that. Even though that would not have influenced my decision if I was in a position to determine what would happen to their investigations, how would I have explained before a panel that they saw cheques paid into my account?”

United States president Donald Trump’s government on Thursday informed around 600 of probationary employees responsible for producing critical weather forecasts, maintaining radar systems, gathering data from satellites and monitoring key commercial fisheries that they were sacked.
Termination letters were sent to staff in offices across the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, NOAA.
The move comes as part of the Trump government’s ongoing efforts to scale down federal agencies, including those responsible for weather and climate research.
Reports suggest that the layoffs could extend to over 800 workers out of the agency’s 13,000 staff.
More job cuts are expected to continue, with more layoffs planned for Friday.
This marks a challenging time for NOAA and its employees amid broader government downsizing initiatives.
Meanwhile a federal judge, William Alsup, had ordered the Trump government to reverse directives for mass firings of government workers, ruling they may be illegal.

US President Donald Trump has said the United States and Britain are negotiating a bilateral trade agreement.
Trump stated this at a joint news conference with UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer on Thursday, saying such a deal could help avert US tariffs.
“We’re going to have a great trade agreement. We’re going to end up with a very good trade agreement for both countries, and we’re working on that as we speak,” Trump said.
According to the UK prime minister, the two countries had begun work on a new economic deal, with advanced technology at its core, to boost the already strong trading relationship.
Trump said the outlines of a trade agreement between the two allies could be agreed very shortly, stating that his Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent, Vice President JD Vance, Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and national security adviser Mike Waltz would lead the efforts.
He reiterated that he expected to get a trade deal done rather quickly, as quickly as it can be done.
When asked if Starmer had convinced him to skip threatened reciprocal tariffs, Trump lauded Starmer’s negotiating skills, saying he has tried.
“He was working really hard at lunch. I think we could very well end up with a real trade deal where the tariffs wouldn’t be necessary. We’ll see,” he added.
Meanwhile, British Finance Minister Rachel Reeves said on Wednesday that she was confident that US-UK trade and investment would not be derailed by Trump’s threat to retaliate against what he sees as barriers to US exports.
Recall that Britain and the US worked on negotiating a free trade agreement during Trump’s first term, but did not quite complete that work.
The United States is Britain’s single biggest national trade partner, although the UK trades far more with the 27 members of the European Union as a bloc.
Trump said earlier this month that he thought something could be worked out with Britain on the threat of tariffs while he sounded more committed to imposing tariffs on EU countries.

According to her, all but “approximately 200 pages of documents” were still being kept secret at the FBI’s office in New York — despite her after repeated requests for the “full” Epstein files.
“By 8:00 a.m. tomorrow, February 28, the FBI will deliver the full and complete Epstein files to my office, including all records, documents, audio and video recordings, and materials related to Jeffrey Epstein and his clients, regardless of how such information was obtained,” Bondi said.
This is coming less than 24 hours after Bondi confirmed that files related Epstein will be released on Thursday.

At least five former US defense secretaries on Thursday condemned President Donald Trump’s firing of the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and other senior officers, calling on Congress to stop any confirmation of their successors.
The ex-defense secretaries, in a scathing letter, also accused Trump of seeking to make the apolitical US military an instrument of partisan politics and using firings, which extend to the top army, navy and air force lawyers, to remove legal constraints on the president’s power.
The letter was written by four defense secretaries who served under Democratic administrations as well as James Mattis, a retired Marine general who served as Trump’s first Pentagon chief from 2017 to 2019.
“President Trump’s actions undermine our all-volunteer force and weaken our national security,” they wrote.
Beyond Mattis, the letter’s signatories – William Perry, Leon Panetta, Chuck Hagel and Lloyd Austin, were said to have served under the Democratic presidential administrations of Bill Clinton, Barack Obama and Joe Biden.
Recall that Trump announced the firings late on Friday but his administration has yet to clarify in any detail what caused the unprecedented shakeup, which also included the dismissal of the head of the Navy, Admiral Lisa Franchetti, the first female officer to lead a military service.
Air Force General C.Q. Brown was only the second Black officer to become chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, and he was said to be less than halfway through his four-year term.
“Mr. Trump’s dismissals raise troubling questions about the administration’s desire to politicize the military. We, like many Americans – including many troops – are therefore left to conclude that these leaders are being fired for purely partisan reasons,” they wrote.
The White House is yet to comment on the letter.
