Ogun State Deputy Governor, Noimot Salako-Oyedele has said that women in politics shouldn’t be a battle of masculinity but rather a partnership aimed at a better Nigeria.
Salako-Oyedele made this known while delivering her keynote address at the Nigerian Women Leadership and Empowerment Conference 2025, tagged ‘Women Inclusion in politics: Challenges, Prospects and the way forward’.
The conference organized by the House of Representatives Committee on Women Affairs and Social Development in collaboration with Nigerian Women International Magazine, was held at the NAF Conference Center, Abuja on Thursday.
The deputy government stressed that one of the biggest misconceptions about women’s political participation was that it threatened male dominance, noting that countries with higher female representation in parliament such as Iceland and Rwanda tend to have stronger social policies, lower corruption levels, and more inclusive economic growth.
Her words, “if we truly want to build a Nigeria where opportunity is available to all, then we must see women in politics not as competitors or usurpers but as partners in progress.
“The truth is, politics is not a zero-sum game. Increasing women’s representation does not mean taking power away from men, it only means that we create a more balanced and effective government’
“If we truly want to have an inclusive democracy, we must address the challenges women face in politics to includes; structural barriers, where women are placed in parties with little chance of winning, lack of funds; as politics is expensive, cultural and social norms, where women are told to wait for their turn and electoral violence and intimidation.”
Speaking on the solution for greater inclusion, Salako-Oyedele outlined some key strategies such as, pushing for affirmative action in major political parties, sustaining political engagement and not just be an election time activism, making funding for women in politics beyond one off initiative, encouraging male allies in the advocacy movement and ensuring that women position themselves strategically for leadership.
She, however, said that women’s inclusion in politics was not just about fairness, but effectiveness, as societies thrive when women have equal opportunities to lead.
In his remarks, the Speaker, House of Representatives, Rt Tajudeen Abass, said the House shall continue to exercise diligent oversight of government institutions to ensure adherence to the national gender policy, bolster the Women’s Caucus to champion gender specific issues effectively, and support electoral reforms that ensure a fixed quarter of female candidates.
He added that the house would also enable both legislation to safeguard women in politics from violence and intimidation, thereby aligning their political framework with the constitution, principles of fairness and freedom, revealing that he recently requested that All Progressive Congress the all progressive (APC) to include all its female members in the party’s national executive committee, which is first of it kind in the history of the party.
Also speaking, the Chairman House of Representatives Committee on women Affairs and Social Development, Kafilat Ogbara, said the event was organised to discuss issues surrounding women leadership, break barrier and create confidence for future generations, as well as celebrate the strength, resilient and potentials of women across Nigeria.

The Nigerian Army troops of Operation FANSAN YANMA have captured Kachallah Hassan Nabamamu, a notorious bandit leader responsible for terrorizing communities in Mada, Tsafe, and other parts of Zamfara State.
The operation, which took place on Thursday at Hegin Mahe, Ruwan Bore in Mada town, Gusau Local Government Area, was a well-coordinated ambush that led to a fierce gun battle.
Several bandits were neutralized, while others escaped with gunshot wounds.
Nabamamu initially fled into nearby homes but was pursued and captured alive by security forces.
This development was contained in a post by security analyst Zagazola Makama on Friday, who gathered details from military sources.
“His arrest is a major breakthrough in the fight against banditry in Zamfara. For years, Nabamamu led deadly attacks, kidnappings, and extortion operations that made life unbearable for communities,” Makama stated.
Hours after his arrest, his gang, led by Bakin Malam, launched a reprisal attack on Chediya, Bamamu, and Makera villages, issuing threats to dislodge residents if Nabamamu was not released.
Many residents fled in fear, but the Nigerian troops swiftly responded with superior firepower, repelling the attackers and restoring calm to the area.
According to military sources, Nabamamu, originally from Tsafe, had a long history of criminal activities.
“He started as an armed robber before fully embracing large-scale banditry. He was deadlier than some of the most feared bandit leaders in Zamfara,” a security source disclosed.
Nabamamu commanded over 100 heavily armed fighters and was deeply involved in weapons trafficking, kidnapping, and extortion.
He also had strong ties with other top bandit leaders, including Bakin Malam, Kachallah Mal Tukur, and Kachallah Baldu.
Military authorities believe that his arrest will significantly weaken bandit operations in Zamfara and neighboring states.

President Donald Trump of the United States on Thursday said he was inclined to back a deal between Britain and Mauritius over the future of a US-UK military base in the Chagos Islands, in a boost for British Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
Trump signaled his backing for the deal as he met Starmer at the White House for their first in-person talks since the he upended US policy on a number of areas, from Ukraine to global trade.
Recall that Britain struck the agreement in October to cede sovereignty of the Chagos Islands to Mauritius, while retaining control under a 99-year lease of the military base on Diego Garcia, the largest island of the archipelago in the Indian Ocean.
The deal, yet to be finalized with a formal treaty, is said to have the support of former US President Joe Biden but has been mired in uncertainty since Trump’s second return to the White House.
Britain had said it would give the Trump administration chance to review the deal before finalizing it.
Sitting beside Starmer in the Oval Office, Trump told reporters that the two leaders would discuss the deal at their meeting on Thursday but that he was likely to accept it.
“We’re going to have some discussions about that very soon, and I have a feeling it’s going to work out very well.
“I think we’ll be inclined to go along with your country. It’s a little early, we have to be given the details, but it doesn’t sound bad,” Trump said.

Onitsha community has risen over the recent murder of their son, member representing Onitsha North 1 state constituency, Hon Justice Azuka, demanding extensive investigation by the Inspector General of Police, Dr Kayode Egbetokun.
Rising from a meeting on Thursday, presided over by the traditional ruler of the community, Obi Alfred Nnaemeka Achebe, the community expressed lack of trust in the Anambra State police command, citing inconsistencies in their account of the murder of the lawmaker, including the recent escape of two suspects alleged to be involved in the killing.
In a press statement released after the meeting, the community said: “The Onitsha indigenous community is outraged over the tragic murder of Hon. Justice Azuka, who represented Onitsha North Constituency 1 at the Anambra State House of Assembly.
“We are demanding transparency, accountability, and swift justice. The community has raised several critical questions about the investigation and the actions of the authorities, including the timeline of Hon. Azuka’s death, the routine freezing of bank accounts of kidnap victims, and the circumstances surrounding the escape of the suspects.
“In light of the unsatisfactory handling of this high-profile case, the Onitsha community is calling on the Inspector General of Police, Dr. Kayode Egbetokun, to take over the investigation from the State Command.
“We are also urging the government of Anambra State to restore confidence in its security strategy and ensure that justice is served speedily.
“Additionally, the community is reviewing its security system for greater effectiveness in collaboration with the security agencies and the state government.”
The community raised critical questions about why it took 40 whole days from 24 December when Azuka was kidnapped to 6 February when his decomposing corpse was discovered for police to act and arrest suspects.
They also raised concerns about the inconsistencies in police report and that of the Anambra State Governor.
While police had said the kidnappers of the lawmaker withdrew N100million from his account, the state government said it wasn’t true, as it had frozen his account immediately after his kidnap.
The community said the last straw that broke the carmel’s back was the escape of two suspects involved in the murder.
They called on the IGP to quickly take over the matter and ensure thorough investigation.

DAILY POST reports that Governor Okpebholo said the monthly subvention was earlier withdrawn by the immediate past administration of Mr Godwin Obaseki.
Okpebholo disclosed this at the 6th convocation ceremony of the institution located at the country home of Adams Oshiomhole in Etsako West Local Government Area of the state.
The governor, represented by Washington Osifo, Commissioner for Energy and Water Resources, also disclosed that the government was willing to increase the subvention in the future.
According to him, the N100million monthly subvention was initially withdrawn by the past administration of Godwin Obaseki.
DAILY POST recalls that the government of Monday Okpebholo had in December 2024 increased the monthly subvention to Ambrose Alli University, AAU, Ekpoma, from N40 million to N500m allocated to it by the Godwin Obaseki’s administration.
He, however, congratulated the management of the institution for keeping the vision of the university, and the parents for believing in the capacity of the lecturers in mentoring their wards academically.
He assured the institution of the state government’s commitment to ensure better education for the people of Edo State.
Earlier, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. Dawood Egbefo said 570 students graduated across the institution’s various disciplines.
Egbefo gave the breakdown of the graduates to include 14 First-Class Honours, 145 Second-Class Honours (Upper Division), 190 Second-Class Honours (Lower Division), 35 Third-Class Honours, 140 Postgraduates, including 20 PhD recipients.
He said out of the graduates, 46 are Medical and Surgery graduates.
While congratulating the graduands, he urged them to carry forward the values of excellence, integrity, and innovation that Edo University Iyamho has instilled in them.
“This is not the end of your journey but the beginning of a new chapter filled with endless possibilities. Embrace challenges with confidence.

The Jigawa State government has officially gazetted 57 out of 400 grazing reserves as part of its efforts to prevent farmer-herder conflicts and promote sustainable livestock farming.
Governor Umar Namadi made this announcement during the Stakeholder Consultative Workshop on Livestock Reforms held in collaboration with the Presidential Livestock Reforms Implementation Committee in Dutse, the state capital.
He emphasized that the initiative not only provides a legal framework for protecting grazing reserves but also ensures the sustainable management of natural resources.
As part of its livestock reform strategy, the state government has deployed 300 Community Animal Health Extension Workers to operate 300 Mobile Veterinary Clinics, offering critical healthcare services to livestock farmers.
“We have recruited and trained 300 Community Animal Health Extension Workers to run mobile veterinary clinics across the state, and the feedback so far has been very encouraging,” Governor Namadi stated.
Additionally, over 560,000 animals have been vaccinated under the state’s routine immunization program to safeguard them from diseases and enhance productivity.
“This initiative has not only improved livestock quality but has also boosted farmers’ incomes, making livestock production more sustainable,” he added.
Governor Namadi highlighted the economic and social benefits of Jigawa State’s livestock sector interventions, stating that they are already helping in early detection, mitigation, and resolution of farmer-herder conflicts, particularly in historically troubled areas.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to working closely with the Jigawa State Farmers and Herdsmen Board and the multi-sectoral stakeholder security committee to maintain peace and enhance productivity in the livestock sector.
