Israel’s military has released its first official report on the failures surrounding Hamas’s October 7, 2023, attack, acknowledging that the Israel Defense Forces, IDF, “failed in its mission to protect Israeli civilians”.
The 19-page report details the misjudgments that led to the deaths of approximately 1,200 people when around 5,000 gunmen from Hamas and other Palestinian groups launched a coordinated assault on Israeli communities, military bases, and a music festival. The attackers also took 251 hostages back to Gaza.
The report points out a “broad streak of complacency” within the IDF, particularly its underestimation of Hamas’s intentions and capabilities. It criticizes the military’s “conflict management” approach toward Gaza and reveals that intelligence suggesting Hamas was planning a large-scale attack was dismissed as “unrealistic or unfeasible.”
Despite emerging assessments in the months prior to the attack indicating that Hamas was shifting from long-term aspirations to actionable plans, this intelligence was not shared with senior officials.
The report also points to failures in the military’s response on October 7. The Gaza Division was “effectively defeated for several hours,” impairing its ability to understand and react to the unfolding crisis..
While the Air Force mobilized quickly, it faced challenges distinguishing between IDF troops, civilians, and attackers. In some instances, wounded soldiers were evacuated before civilians.
Lt. Gen. Herzi Halevi, the outgoing IDF chief of staff, accepted full responsibility for the failures.
“I embrace my responsibility,” he said after presenting the findings to commanders. Last month, Halevi announced his resignation and called for an independent commission of inquiry.
Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has opposed initiating a state inquiry until the ongoing Gaza war concludes. His critics accuse him of refusing to acknowledge any personal responsibility for the security lapse.
Israel’s military response to the October 7 attack has led to an air and ground offensive in Gaza, where at least 48,365 people have been killed, according to the Hamas-run health ministry.

Embattled Speaker of the Lagos State House of Assembly, Mojisola Meranda on Friday insisted that Mudashiru Obasa has been impeached.
Meranda, however, noted that Obasa can still attend plenary because he is still a lawmaker and a member of the Assembly.
She disclosed this while addressing journalists in Lagos on events that occurred on Thursday at the state House of Assembly.
Recall that lawmakers had removed Obasa in January while he was away in the United States and Meranda was sworn in as his replacement.
Upon his return, Obasa described his impeachment as null and void, stressing that his removal did not follow due process.
On Thursday, news broke that the security details attached to Meranda were withdrawn and that of Obasa restored.
Shortly after the news broke, Obasa stormed the Assembly complex and broke into the office of the Speaker.
Obasa also presided over plenary with three members where he declared that he was never removed as Speaker.
Obasa has also dragged 35 lawmakers to court to challenge his removal as Speaker.
But, the Lagos High Court sitting in Ikeja had ordered that all members of the Assembly be joined as parties in the suit by Obasa.
Speaking after the court sitting, Meranda said: “I think the removed Speaker is still a member of the House of Assembly so he has every right to come but the invasion and breaking into my office is a big one.”
On Obasa postponing plenary, she said, “That was just a show of shame because in our job we have numbers that form a quorum.
“So if you are sitting with three or four members you are only doing a theatre.”

Former Governor of Sokoto State, Alhaji Attahiru Dalhatu Bafarawa, has cautioned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu against stifling opposition politics in Nigeria, warning that such a move could harm the country’s democracy.
In an open letter addressed to the President, Bafarawa urged Tinubu to remember how opposition politics played a role in his own rise to power and ensured that Nigeria remains a multi-party democracy.
Bafarawa, who served as governor from 1999 to 2007, recalled his long history in Nigerian politics, emphasizing his commitment to democracy. He noted that past administrations allowed the opposition to thrive, which ultimately led to the formation of the All Progressives Congress (APC), the party under which Tinubu was elected.
“You are, as a matter of fact, a product of opposition politics. You will therefore be making a grave mistake if you allow yourself to be carried away by the temporary power at your disposal by not giving the opposition a breathing space,”
Bafarawa wrote. “Anybody who is advising you to muzzle the opposition wants to deceive you into tarnishing your hard-earned reputation as a democrat.”
Beyond politics, Bafarawa expressed deep concern over the worsening economic situation in the country, stating that Nigerians are experiencing severe hardship nearly two years into Tinubu’s administration. He pointed to the growing insecurity, inflation, and widespread hunger, calling for urgent intervention.
“The blight of insecurity which you promised to curtail is getting out of hand. The economic outlook is frightening. Inflation is galloping out of control. Hunger is ravaging the land. There are cries of anguish all over the country. This slide, Mr President, must be urgently arrested without further delay,” he wrote.
While acknowledging that Tinubu inherited an insecure and struggling economy from his predecessor, Muhammadu Buhari, Bafarawa insisted that the President has a “historical responsibility”to fulfill his campaign promises to improve the lives of Nigerians.
He further advised the President to learn from the democratic system in the United States, where two dominant parties ensure the stability of democracy. He warned that any attempt to suppress opposition voices could lead to national instability.
“I therefore call on you, Mr President, to shun the temptation of enthroning a one-party order in Nigeria. Nigeria can ill afford a one-party arrangement. It is a recipe for anarchy. Rather, sustenance of a democratic order is the easiest route to move a country forward,” he wrote.
Bafarawa reminded Tinubu that had opposition politics been suppressed in the past, he would not have had the platform to become President.
“Remember, if those who came before you killed the opposition, there would have been no vehicle for you to get to your present political destination,” he added.

The Supreme Court has ordered the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, and the Accountant General of the Federation to stop further release of financial allocations to the Rivers State government with immediate effect.
DAILY POST that the apex court directed that the order shall remain in force until the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, halts all his illegal, unlawful, and unconstitutional activities.
Specifically, the court ruled that no money shall be released to the state government until a lawful Appropriation Law is enacted under the Martin Amaewhule speakership.
In a judgment delivered on Friday by Justice Emmanuel Akomaye Agim, the Supreme Court also ordered the 27 members of the Rivers State House of Assembly to resume functions immediately.
The unanimous judgment of the five-member panel of justices, led by Justice Musa Uwani Aba-Aji, nullified all actions carried out by Governor Fubara for being unlawful.
The apex court criticized the governor for engaging in the criminal act of demolishing the House of Assembly with impunity to prevent the 27 legislators from sitting and carrying out lawful activities.
Justice Agim further ordered that the Clerk and Deputy Clerk, who were unlawfully redeployed, must be allowed to resume work alongside the House of Assembly staff.
The court held that it was an aberration for Governor Fubara to operate with only four out of the 32 House of Assembly members under the guise of baseless fears of impeachment.
According to the justices, Fubara, through his unlawful acts, collapsed the House of Assembly and used his immunity under Section 308 of the 1999 Constitution to carry out acts against the rule of law.
The Supreme Court affirmed the judgments of both the Court of Appeal and the Federal High Court in Abuja, which had declared the actions against the 27 House of Assembly members as unlawful and illegal.
A fine of N10 million was imposed on Fubara, to be paid to the House of Assembly and the 27 members who instituted the suit against him.
The court ruled that the receipt and disbursement of monthly allocations since January this year by Governor Siminalayi Fubara is a constitutional aberration that must not be allowed to continue.
Justice Joyce Abdulmalik of the Federal High Court had last year ruled that the presentation of the 2024 budget by Fubara before a four-member Rivers House of Assembly was an affront to constitutional provisions.
Specifically, the judge stated that Fubara’s action in implementing an unlawful budget constituted gross violations of the 1999 Constitution, which he swore to protect.
The judge had therefore restrained the CBN, the Accountant General of the Federation, Zenith Bank, and Access Bank from allowing Fubara to access money from the Consolidated Revenue and Federation Account.
