Banditry allegation: Court approves 60-day detention of Miyetti Allah leader, 6 others
The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted permission to the Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA, to detain Alhaji Bello Bodejo, the President of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore, alongside six others for 60 days to allow for investigations into allegations of banditry and illegal arms possession.
Justice Emeka Nwite approved the detention following an ex-parte motion filed by DIA counsel I.O. Odom. The case, listed as FHC/ABJ/CS/1875/V/2024, requested a two-month detention period to facilitate a thorough investigation.
The suspects, arrested in Nasarawa State on December 11, include Bodejo, Suleiman Abba, Umar Jibrin, Umar Bello, Muhammed Ayuba, Jibrin Baba, and Saidu Wakili.
They were transferred to DIA custody after their arrest by troops of the Nigerian Armed Forces.
According to an affidavit submitted by DIA investigator Bonny Ozegbe, the suspects were involved in an attack on a military base in Nasarawa State. The assault, allegedly orchestrated by Bodejo, resulted in injuries to soldiers and civilians, theft of military arms, and significant destruction.
Recovered from the suspects were AK-47 rifles and ammunition. The affidavit also pointed out ongoing efforts to capture additional accomplices.
“Releasing the suspects could jeopardise the investigation and pose a serious threat to national security,” Ozegbe stated.
Justice Nwite granted the request, permitting DIA custody for the suspects until March 3, 2025, when the case will be mentioned.
In a related development, Justice Mohammed Zubairu of the FCT High Court ordered the release of Bodejo from the custody of the Department of State Services, DSS, deeming his earlier detention without charges as unlawful.

In a surprising turn of events, the Governing Council of the University of Abuja, under the chairmanship of Air Vice-Marshal Saddiq Ismaila Kaita (rtd) approved the appointment of Professor Aisha Sani Maikudi as the 7th substantive Vice Chancellor of the university.
Her appointment follows the 77th extraordinary meeting of the institution’s governing council on Tuesday, December 31, 2024.
A statement by Dr Habib Yakoob, acting Director of Information and University Relations, confirmed the latest development.
The statement noted that Maikudi’s appointment takes effect from January 1, 2025, and for a non-renewable tenure of five years.
Maikudi emerged as the best among the 10 shortlisted candidates interviewed by the Joint Council and Senate Selection Board of the University, in line with the extant regulations governing the process.
Prior to her appointment as substantive Vice Chancellor, Prof Maikudi served in an acting capacity from July 5, 2024. During this period, she worked closely with the governing council to stabilise the university through a challenging crisis, demonstrating exceptional leadership and commitment.
Prof Maikudi, born on January 31, 1983, in Katsina State, is a professor of International Law at the University of Abuja.
Her educational journey began at Sacred Heart School, Kaduna, where she obtained her First School Leaving Certificate, FSLC, in 1993. She proceeded to Queens College, Yaba, Lagos, earning her West African Senior School Certificate Examination, WASSCE, in 1999.
Maikudi’s academic excellence took her to the University of Reading, where she earned an LLB in 2004. She further specialised in Public International Law, obtaining an LLM from the London School of Economics and Political Science in 2005. After completing her legal education at the Nigerian Law School in 2007, she studied for a PhD in International Law from the University of Abuja in 2015.
She joined the University of Abuja as a Lecturer II on September 4, 2008 and rose through the ranks to become a professor in 2021.
She broke the glass ceiling as the first female Head of Department in 2013, the first female Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Law in 2018, and the pioneer Director of the University of Abuja International Centre in 2019. She also served as the Deputy Vice Chancellor (Academic), where she was instrumental in enhancing academic standards and promoting a culture of excellence at the university.
An innovator in her field, she introduced the United Nations Law course at the University of Abuja in 2019, backed by extensive research and numerous publications in academic journals and book chapters. The new Vice Chancellor is an active member of several professional organisations, including the Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, Nigerian Law Teachers Association, NLTA, International Federation of Women Lawyers, FIDA, and Nigerian Society of International Law.
Before her appointment on Tuesday, there had been controversies surrounding her emergence as the Vice Chancellor, with some academic staff protesting against her appointment.

The Ogun State Government has allocated two and three-bedroom bungalows to 50 more subscribers in the Prince Court Estate, Kobape Phase 3.
The allocation, according to a statement signed by the Commissioner for Housing Housing, Jamiu Akande Omoniyi, on Tuesday, is in fulfilment of the promise by the ministry to bridge the shortfalls in the allocation of housing units in Phase 2 of the housing scheme.
He explained that the new set of allotees needed to be given priority as they were part of those subscribers who missed out on the allocation of about 100 units of homes carried out mid-year.
Omoniyi added that the few remaining subscribers will be allocated their homes in the first quarter of 2025 at the eco-friendly Phase 3 of the Prince Court Estate Kobape Scheme, while Phase 4 will also be unveiled due to popular demand for more affordable houses within the same location.
The commissioner, however, noted in the statement that the new subscribers will pay a sum of N3.5 million as “a fair and subsidised contribution for payment for the provision of infrastructural facilities in the estate” as applicable to those in the previously released batch.
The payment, according to him, is expected to be fully paid by the allotees within 60 days from the date of allocation to enable the issuing of final allocation letters from the Ministry of Housing.
He warned that failure by subscribers to adhere to this pre-allocation condition will be deemed invalid and subject to withdrawal.
While reiterating the ministry’s commitment to continue to deliver on the housing policy of the Governor Dapo Abiodun-led administration, the commissioner submitted that other housing schemes, such as the Gateway Aviation Village, Iperu-Remo, GRA Regeneration Scheme in Abeokuta, Ijebu Ode and Ilaro, as well as PMB Estate, are positioned for official commissioning in the new year.
