The Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, has urged Ndigbo to return to their homeland to celebrate the Christmas season, assuring that its Eastern Security Network, ESN, operatives will ensure safety and a peaceful atmosphere during the festive period.

The group reaffirmed its commitment to tackling insecurity in the South East region and emphasized its role in fostering peace and development.

It described Alaigbo as a historically peaceful region, urging all Igbos to contribute to maintaining harmony, which is critical for the region’s economic growth.

IPOB stressed that peace and security in the South East should not lag behind other regions in Nigeria, even as it accused the Nigerian government of exacerbating insecurity in the region through militarization and alleged subjugation.

“We need peace to thrive as a strategic economic hub in Africa. Every Igbo man and woman must work towards peace and security in Alaigbo,” the statement read.

The group reiterated its commitment to securing investments in the South East and encouraged Igbos to bring their investments home to spur development and create job opportunities for the region’s youth.

It also cautioned criminals to steer clear of the South East, particularly during the Christmas season, as ESN operatives and IPOB volunteers are actively working to make the region inhospitable for criminal activities.

The group also accused the Nigerian government and its security forces of sponsoring insecurity as a pretext for continued militarization of the region.

“We call for the dismantling of all indiscriminate and illegal military, police, and other checkpoints in the South East. These checkpoints are sources of extortion, intimidation, and harassment of travelers,” the group stated.

IPOB highlighted the role of ESN operatives in safeguarding Biafran bushes and forests to prevent criminal elements from using them as hideouts, encouraging residents to contact ESN operatives when needed through the published security information contact numbers.

Edo North Senator, Adams Oshiomhole, has described his state as the greatest after Akwa Ibom in Nigeria.

Oshiomhole disclosed this during the Senate’s valedictory session in honor of Governor Monday Okpebholo on the floor of the Upper Legislative Chamber on Wednesday.

The lawmaker said Okpebholo had taken bold steps to reform Edo State within 30 days of assuming office as governor.

According to Oshiomhole: “We all can say one thing about Senator Monday, I have never met a man as humble as Monday.

“His humility is infectious, and yet, as a man of few words, he’s made up for that through action and sustained actions in a manner that is clear and discernible.

“Mr. President, we in Edo State are so happy because I can go home now without fear, and in one month, he has gone into history as one of the first governors who, under one week, started making appointments of men and women who will help to sharpen the economy and social life of the people of Edo State.

“He has already taken bold steps to restore respect to the traditional institutions of Edo State, and he has already started doing those things that will affect the infrastructural development of our great state, which has been abandoned for many years. All those he appointed are people we already know, like the Attorney General.

“I want to thank you, sir, for the leadership you provided, not only while he was here but also for all the support that this Senate under your leadership provided, morally and otherwise, to support, encourage, and do everything that you could — other than coming to vote — which you are not privileged to do because you are not registered in Edo State, but you relocated to Edo to give us solidarity when you needed it the most.

“On behalf of the people of Edo State, who are very happy that we have a new Sheriff in town, a progressive Sheriff for that matter, I want to thank you for your leadership, your care, your support, and all the senators you mobilized. Even when the former governor wanted to raid the INEC office and change figures, some of our senators became boxers to protect the votes of the people of Edo State.

“We are happy that in 30 days, Edo people are aware that there is a new governor in town who is humble, resourceful, intelligent, with few words, but maximum action.

“To all distinguished Senators who supported us in our struggle to reclaim Edo State, we are very grateful. Senator Monday, I thank you for the honor you have done to me as a person and the one you are doing to all those who have met you after you became the executive governor of the greatest state after Akwa Ibom.”

Against this background, the council called for true federalism to address the anomalies and mistreatment of the people of the Niger Delta region.

The President of the Council, Theophilous Alaye, stated this during the 26th anniversary of the Kaiama Declaration while addressing the Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, at Government House, Port Harcourt, Rivers State.

He expressed disappointment and dissatisfaction with the federal government for failing to meet the needs and aspirations of the people of the Niger Delta.

Alaye, in a statement issued Thursday, decried that the oil and gas exploration activities taking place in the Niger Delta have been sustaining the country, yet little is given to the people of the region.

He noted, “It is wrong for the people of the Niger Delta, who lay the golden egg, to be given little from their God-given resources through the 13 percent derivation formula. We call for true federalism in order to address the anomalies and mistreatment of the people of the Niger Delta region.”

The IYC president, therefore, appealed to Fubara to convey the message of Ijaw youths to President Bola Tinubu, saying Ijaw people have contributed immensely to the growth, development, and survival of Nigeria.

Alaye added, “As a people, we understand that our resources have been a contributing factor to the well-being of Nigeria, and as a result of oil exploration in the Niger Delta, our environment has been adversely contaminated and polluted. Therefore, we need complete remediation.”

Responding, Fubara noted that the Kaiama Declaration and the Isaac Boro Day celebration are national days for the Ijaw nationality, emphasizing that the anniversary marks a significant day in history.

He appealed to the Ijaw youths to remain peaceful and law-abiding, saying no meaningful development could be achieved in an atmosphere of crisis and violence.
