Ghana has received 169 citizens deported from the United States since January 2025, the Foreign Affairs Ministry has disclosed. Another 120 Ghanaians are reportedly awaiting final decisions on their immigration cases.
Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa briefed Parliament on Thursday, 20 November, revealing that a total of 388 Ghanaians have been detained in the US over immigration-related matters since the start of the year.
“Of this number, 120 are awaiting final decisions by the Board of Immigration Appeals, while 49 have exhausted all legal avenues and await deportation arrangements,” Ablakwa said.
According to the Minister, 90 of the deportees returned on commercial flights, and 66 were brought back on chartered flights supervised by US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents.
Responding to MPs’ questions on the benefits of the arrangement, Ablakwa said Ghana had not requested any financial, logistical, or material assistance from the US. He explained that the intervention is based on humanitarian and Pan-African principles, highlighting the need to support fellow West Africans in distress.
“These are individuals being treated shabbily, without dignity. We cannot look on as Kwame Nkrumah’s Ghana,” he told Parliament.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs reiterated that Ghana’s handling of deportees is grounded in solidarity and the protection of citizens abroad.
