Nigerian Navy confiscates petrol, foreign rice in Lagos
The Forward Operating Base, FOB, Badagry of the Nigerian Navy has confiscated no fewer than 13,800 litres of petrol and at least 71 bags of foreign rice in multiple operations along Badagry creeks.
This was contained in a statement released on Sunday by the Commanding Officer of FOB Badagry, Navy Captain Oyeleye Omotayo.
Omotayo, who confirmed that the seizures occurred between March 7 and 14, said naval operatives acted on intelligence received about suspected smugglers operating in the area, leading to the interception of the items during separate operations.
“In continuation of the fight against smuggling within our Area of Operation in Badagry, a target operation was launched on Friday, March 14, at 2:54 am,” Omotayo said.
According to him, the operation focused on intercepting smugglers and confiscating products intended for illegal export.
“The smugglers initially evaded our water patrol, but were intercepted by our land patrol unit around 3:30 am.
“During the operation, 71 bags of foreign rice were found being smuggled. The items were seized, while the suspects fled upon sighting our patrol at 4:22 am,” he added.
The Commanding Officer noted that the seized rice has been taken to the base for further necessary action in accordance with procedures.
He said that on the same day, the intelligence team received a report at 12:15 am about petrol being stockpiled at a beach near Bollington in Badagry creeks.
Omotayo further stated that intelligence indicated that the products were to be smuggled by wooden boats through Nigeria’s territorial waters into Benin Republic.
While searching the area, 234 jerry cans of 25 litres each, totalling about 5,850 litres of petrol, were discovered and taken to the base.
He further disclosed that 7,770 litres of petrol were also seized in other operations conducted in Badagry communities.
He confirmed that the 7,950 litres of petrol seized from two filling stations and Tongeji Island on March 7 and 8, respectively, were handled lawfully.

TCN blames BEDC for power outage in Delta communities
The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, has blamed the Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, for the power outage in some parts of Delta State.
A statement signed by Ndidi Mbah, General Manager, Public Affairs of TCN said BEDC wrongly attributed its inability to deliver power to its 33Kv customers to TCN’s maintenance activities.
DAILY POST also reports that the management of BEDC had in a statement on its social media platforms listed the feeders affected by the outage as Abraka commercial, Industrial Commercial, Ughelli /Shell, Sapele and Abraka.
The BEDC said the affected feeders are all on Band A, adding that the power outage was as a result of maintenance works by TCN.
Its public announcement, dated March 15, 2025, was titled ‘Service Level Shortfall: March 14, 2025’.
Parts of BEDC’s statement read, “Dear Valued Customers, we sincerely apologize for not meeting with the required minimum service level of 20 hours on the feeders below.
“Abraka commercial, Industrial Commercial, Ughelli /Shell, Sapele and Abraka.
“We are taking steps to ensure consistent and reliable power supply in the affected areas. BEDC is committed to upholding service level agreements.”
However, in a statement released in response to BEDC’s claims, TCN said the power outage was not due to maintenance services on its part.
TCN, in the statement signed by its spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, urged BEDC to provide accurate information to its customers, stating facts as they are, for the benefit of all stakeholders.
Mbah assured that TCN remains committed to ensuring efficient and reliable transmission of electricity nationwide.
The statement read, “The Transmission Company of Nigeria, TCN, wishes to address the publication by Benin Electricity Distribution Company, BEDC, on its social media platform, dated March 14, 2025.
“The announcement attributed BEDC’s inability to deliver power to its 33kV customers to TCN’s maintenance activities.
“For clarification purposes, TCN only applied for a planned outage on March 11, 2025, at the Amukpe Transmission Station, which was completed on the same day and the bulk power supply was restored.
“Contrary to BEDC’s claims, TCN’s maintenance activities did not cause the power delivery issues experienced by BEDC’s customers.
“The only accurate statement in BEDC’s publication was regarding the Ughelli/Shell 33kV feeder T1 60MVA, which tripped due to a fault on 14th March 2025. TCN is currently working to restore the bulk power supply to the affected feeder.
“It is essential to note that all other areas mentioned by BEDC in their release, experiencing power delivery issues, are a result of faults on their own (BEDC’s) 33kV feeders.”
