The Imo State House of Assembly has urged the state governor, Hope Uzodinma, to direct the Ministry of Health and other relevant bodies to ban the use of Styrofoam at eateries and public events in the state due to its health implications.

The resolution followed the adoption of a motion moved by the member representing Aboh Mbaise Constituency, Princewill Ugochukwu Amuchie, who strongly emphasised the health risks associated with the use of the product.

Presenting the motion, Amuchie explained that the hazardous effects of Styrofoam are already widely known, prompting the Lagos State government to ban its production and usage.

The lawmaker maintained that the indiscriminate use and disposal of the product at eateries and event venues contribute to environmental pollution, which, according to him, poses a significant danger to human health.

The Aboh Mbaise representative highlighted that the continued production and disposal of Styrofoam release toxic chemicals capable of contaminating the air, water, and soil, leading to incurable diseases such as cancer and reproductive disorders.

He pointed out that if the Lagos State government and some other countries have banned its public use, there is no reason why the Imo State Government should not follow suit to promote healthier living.

Following his presentation, Amuchie urged his colleagues to support the motion.

After extensive deliberation, the members resolved to urge the governor to direct the Ministry of Health and other relevant agencies to halt the use of Styrofoam in the state.

The House further resolved to encourage the governor to provide alternative, health-friendly packaging products.

Additionally, the members resolved to call on the governor to launch a public awareness campaign on the ban and to establish a task force to enforce it.
