Russia’s invasion: US charges Europe to fortify Ukraine
The United States has urged Europe to make Ukraine stronger as a measure to forestall a repeat of Russia’s invasion.
President Donald Trump’s special envoy, retired General Keith Kellogg, gave the advice on Thursday in an interview on ABC News.
Kellogg urged Europe to rally support for Ukraine, saying an increase in the country’s military might would deter further attacks.
“I’m absolutely convinced that once a ceasefire goes into place, peace goes into place, they (Russia) are not going to mess around with Donald Trump.
“Maybe you want to make Ukraine the Sparta of Central Europe; make sure they are well trained, well equipped,” Kellogg said.
The President’s Assistant noted that much of that assistance “is going to be the Europeans’ call because it’s in their backyard.”
Kellogg, however, believes the Russians will not carry out another invasion, saying the losses on both sides in the ongoing war are “astronomical.”
“We are looking at losses we have not seen since World War II,” he emphasized. “We’re not talking ten thousand or twenty thousand, we’re talking in the hundreds of thousands.”
Kellogg decried the loss of lives in wars, recalling that the Russians (then Soviets) withdrew from Afghanistan after losing 18,000 men.
“Ukraine has lost more in this war than we (America) lost in the Korean war and Vietnam war combined.”
“I think both sides (Russia and Ukraine) are saying we don’t want to fight this fight again,” the presidential envoy stated.
