A lecturer in the Department of Arabic and Islamic Studies, University of Ibadan, Dr Mikail Abdulsalam has cautioned couples not to allow external influences to disrupt their marriages.

Abdulsalam made this declaration on Sunday while delivering the 11th Ramadan lecture organised by Muslim Community of Araromi and Environs, in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.

The don while speaking on the topic ‘The major problems affecting marriages and their solutions in Islam’, advised Muslim couples to refrain from allowing external influences to disrupt their marriages.

He said that some marriages fail on the day of wedding because things that needed to be done have been abandoned by the couples and their relatives.

Abdulsalam who boamed at the rate of divorce among young Muslim couples, said that external influences have contributed to the breakup of many marriages in recent times.

He advised Muslim couples not to allow eternal influences if they want their marriages to last.

“Poor foundation. There are something that we call internal and external influences that are affecting marriages. Some of us do not follow the procedures again. The prophet Muhammad (SAW) said that someone who is married has fulfill half of his Deen (religion).

“We have seen marriages that do not last for more than one or two months. Why is it that Muslims do not use Quran to settle their marriage issues again. Most of these marriages fail in the beginning. Now people don’t investigate the families of their respective suitors again. These are some of the reasons. All the things that God said in the Quran, they are solutions.

“There are no more mentorship again. These are the nitty gritty of marriage. People do not know the significant of marriage. Comparability is very important.

“These are the things that are causing divorce. Most people have higher expectations both male and female. If all men are upright, then the rate of divorce will be minimal. Refrain from third party if you want your marriages to last. One of the elements of eternal influences is the issue of in-laws. In-laws from the two sides,” he said.
