The Controller General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr Abubakar Ahmad Audi, has stressed the need for the adoption of the Safe Schools Initiative in all states, as over 80 percent of Nigerian schools remain vulnerable to attacks.

He made this known while presenting a letter of appreciation to Governor Umar Namadi of Jigawa State in recognition of his exemplary leadership in championing the Safe Schools Initiative in the country.

Represented by the Commandant of the National Safe Schools Initiative Programme, Rabiu I. Muhammad, the NSCDC chief highlighted growing concerns over school safety, tracing the initiative’s momentum to the tragic abduction of the Chibok girls.

The global outcry following the incident led to the adoption of the Safe Schools Initiative by 195 countries, with Nigeria formalising its commitment under former President Muhammadu Buhari. This resulted in the establishment of the National Safe Schools Project Centre at the NSCDC headquarters in Abuja.

Barrister Muhammad commended Governor Namadi for his outstanding support, noting that Jigawa State stands out among the 36 states and the FCT for not only establishing a Safe Schools Coordination Centre but also enhancing it.

“You are the only governor who has fully supported the centre, providing two Hilux vehicles, four motorcycles, and items worth over N400 million,” he said.

He praised the Jigawa State government’s dedication to the initiative, emphasising that its implementation has significantly contributed to reducing the number of out-of-school children in Nigeria.

In response, Governor Umar Namadi reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to providing a safe and conducive learning environment.

He disclosed that the state government recently recruited over 9,900 security guards and spent more than N400 million on fencing public boarding schools to enhance security and ensure a safer learning environment.

The governor reiterated that ensuring school safety remains a top priority of his administration, as it is fundamental to improving access to education and securing the future of the state’s children.
