Senegal to summon ex-president Sall to court

A Senegalese government spokesman on Friday said Senegal will summon former president Macky Sall to court after the country’s audit office unveiled irregularities in the treasury’s bookkeeping on his watch.

The ex-president is being accused of having presided over a catastrophic mismanagement of the public purse after an independent report invalidated official figures under his stewardship, revising both debt and the public deficit sharply upwards.

Having lived in Morocco since leaving office last year, Sall has rejected the row over the report, describing it as political.

According to government spokesman, Moustapha Sarre, the former leader, who ruled Senegal between 2012 and 2024, could even be considered as the leader of a gang that committed criminal acts.

“Inevitably he will face justice. He is the person chiefly responsible for the extremely serious acts that were committed.

“Legal proceedings cannot be avoided,” Sarre warned.

The audit office’s report, published on February 12, found accounting discrepancies such as a 2023 budget deficit of 12.3 percent, more than double the 4.9 percent announced under Sall.

Meanwhile, Bassirou Diomaye Faye, who was elected president last March, has pledged a clean break from the Sall era.

Prime Minister Ousmane Sonko, a longtime opponent of Sall, promised last September to investigate what he said was widespread corruption under the previous administration.

Several former officials have been charged and imprisoned in recent months, including a lawmaker close to Sall on fraud and money laundering charges on Thursday.

Russia has hailed President Donald Trump of the United States of America after his meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy of Ukraine in Washington on Friday.

Russia’s foreign ministry spokeswoman, Maria Zakharova said Trump showed “restraint” by not hitting Zelensky during their shouting match in the White House.

“I think Zelensky’s biggest lie of all his lies was his assertion in the White House that the Kyiv regime in 2022 was alone, without support,” she wrote on Telegram.

“How Trump and Vance held back from hitting that scumbag is a miracle of restraint,” she said.

Also on the visit, former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, who is now deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, described Zelensky as “insolent pig” who had received “a proper slap down in the Oval Office”.

Kirill Dmitriev, head of the Russian Direct Investment Fund, called the heated confrontation between Trump and Zelensky “historic”.

Dmitriev was one of Moscow’s negotiators in the Russian-American talks held on February 18 in Saudi Arabia — the first since Russia began its Ukraine offensive in 2022.

Zelenskyy met Trump in Washington on Friday to discuss issues surrounding the peace deal that would bring the war between Ukraine and Russia to an end.

Zelenskyy had on multiple occasions accused Trump of backing Russia and trying to do the biddings of President Vladimir Putin.

Recall that Trump had once described Zelenskyy as a dictator and did not evolve him in the peace talk meeting in Saudi Arabia earlier last month.

Ukrainian leader, Zelenskyy, has however, insisted that the war must not end on Russia’s terms and conditions.

Babangida prepared Abacha to take over from him – Gen Williams gives details

General Ishola Williams, rtd, has revealed that it was Gen Ibrahim Babangida that prepared the late General Sani Abacha to take over before his controversial annulment of June 12, 1993 election.

The revelation from Williams, who was a high-ranking member of the Nigerian Army during the military years, contradicts the disclosure the former military head of state, Babangida made in his book, ‘Journey in Service’.

Gen Williams, a former Chief of Defence Training and Planning, said this when he appeared as a guest on the Friday edition of Inside Sources with Laolu Akande, a Channels Television’s programme.

Gen Williams was one of those mentioned in Babangida’s 420-page autobiography.

One of the key points of the memoir was IBB’s admission for the first time that Moshood Kashimawo Olawale, MKO, Abiola won the June 12, 1993 election.

He took responsibility for the annulment, but went further to blame Abacha for canceling the poll without his authority.

On page 296 of the book, whilst he described the ripple of reactions that trailed the annulment of the election adjudged the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, IBB said, “Within the military leadership, there was palpable outrage. The best of us, like Lt-General Salihu Ibrahim and Major-General Ishola Williams, were alarmed, and Colonel Abubakar Dangiwa Umar threatened to resign.”

However, according to Gen Williams, IBB had prepared Abacha to succeed him before he annulled the election.

Gen Williams said, “Gen Babangida forgot to mention that he used to call Gen Abacha the Khalipha which meant that one way or the other, he was encouraging Gen Abacha to succeed him.

“And to a certain extent, in my conversation with Gen Babangida, just before he stepped aside, one midnight in Minna, he could not answer a question that I asked him: ‘Did you have a blood oath with Abacha that he would succeed you?’

“I asked him that question but he refused to answer. In Minna, one-on-one, at the Presidential Guest House in Minna.

“Before that, there was a group of civilian governors in his regime that came to visit him and encouraged him not to hand over. It was when they left that I asked him the question and told him not to mind the governors, that the best thing is for him to leave.

“I told him that we were preparing to receive him in Minna with full military honours after he stepped aside. And I did that. I was a Commander in Minna at that time. He came to Minna with his wife.

“Many officers came with him. These officers knew that he had stepped aside but put pressure on him to appoint a new CDS (chief of defense staff) and service chiefs.

“He (IBB) appointed new service chiefs and when those ones came to tell me, I said you are not going to last very long… Shortly after that, Gen Abacha flew in, met with Gen Babangida in his house and when he came out he changed all of them (service chiefs).

“There was a meeting before the interim government where officers from Brigadier General and above of the Armed Forces met in the Villa. The late Attorney General (Clement) Akpamgbo was the only civilian at the meeting.

“When the discussion started about June 12, I was alarmed and I said: ‘What are we discussing? I thought we came here to discuss the handover process?’ Gen Abacha was sitting to my right and in between us was Gen Diya. Gen Abacha said Ishola don’t talk like that but I said we should be discussing handing over, not annulment. On what basis will the election be annulled? But nobody answered me.

“It was only Gen Ikonne who supported me. By that time, the election had not been annulled yet but the election had taken place.

“I said we don’t need a transitional government but it was ruled out. The whole decree was planned in such a way so that Abacha could take over,” he said.

Former Nigerian Aviation Minister, Femi Fani-Kayode, has said President Volodymyr Zelenskyy is finished and his days are numbered.

Fani-kayode said Zelenskyy’s disrespect at the White House was an indication that his days are numbered and Russia had finally triumphed.

He faulted Zelenskky for engaging in a heated argument with President Donald Trump of the United States and Vice president JD Vance, who offered him a chance for a peace deal that would the Russia-Ukraine war.

The meeting between Zelensky, Trump, and Vance which was scheduled to be a mineral dealing signing parley snowballed into a heated argument over Russia’s decision to end ceasefire in the ongoing war with Ukraine.

During the meeting, Zelenskky had pushed back on decisions from the US president and his Vice, thereby, leading to a heated argument.

Reacting, Fani-Kayode posted on X: “After what happened today I can safely say that Zelensky is FINISHED!

“@realDonaldTrump gave him a chance for peace and invited him to the @WhiteHouse. Instead of being thankful he went there and started being disrespectful, attempting to impose his will and talking absolute rubbish.

“His days are not only numbered but #Ukraine as a nation is finished and thankfully #Russia has finally triumphed!

“Kudos to Trump and @JDVance for putting the deluded rat-like, cocaine-sniffing and ungrateful midget in his place.

“Millions of Ukrainians have been killed and his nation destroyed because of his greed, delusions, insanity and over-bloated ego.

“Zelenksy should put his tail between his legs, return to his country, resign as President and go back to being a Grade B actor and comedian.”

He spoke while commending President Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance for standing their ground during the heated meeting with Zelenskyy at the White House on Friday.

Russia vs Ukraine: You’re gambling with World War III – Trump warns Zelenskyy

President Donald Trump of the United States, US, has accused President Volodymyr Zelenskyy of “gambling with World War III.”

Trump made the remark during Friday’s heated argument between him, Zelenskyy, and the US Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

Zelenskyy of Ukraine was in the US to sign a mineral deal that could see the intervention of US in the ongoing war between Ukraine and Russia.

But, the situation deteriorated during the meeting after Zelenskyy pushed back against Vance’s comment that “the path to peace” is to engage in diplomacy with Russia.

Vance told Zelenskyy: “You should be thanking the president for trying to bring an end to this conflict.”

He added that Ukraine faces serious problems in its war effort.

Zelensky responded saying the US experiences its own problems but Trump interjected warning him that: “You’re gambling with the lives of millions of people. You’re gambling with World War III.

“And what you’re doing is very disrespectful to the country, this country.”

When Zelensky tried to respond, Trump refused saying “No, no. You’ve done a lot of talking. Your country is in big trouble. You’re not winning this. You have a damn good chance of coming out OK because of us.”

“We had a very meaningful meeting in the White House today,” he added.

Prior to the meeting, Trump had tagged his Ukrainian counterpart a dictator with no election and a shattered country.

Trump said Zelenskyy was only good at playing former US President Joe Biden “like a fiddle”.

He accused Zelenskyy of deceiving the US into parting with billions of dollars to prosecute the war against Russia.

In his response, Zelenskyy said Trump was “trapped” in a Russian “disinformation bubble”.
