Olatunbosun Oyintiloye, a chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Osun State, has described the just-concluded local government election in the state as a waste of taxpayers’ money.
DAILY POST recalls that the local government elections in Osun State were held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, across the 30 local government council areas and 332 wards.
Oyintiloye made these remarks while speaking with journalists on Tuesday in Osogbo.
He said that since the Court of Appeal in Akure reinstated the sacked APC council chairmen in its judgment, the conduct of the election was illegal and an exercise in futility.
The APC chieftain stated that, at the appropriate time, the state government would be asked to account for the money wasted on the election.
Oyintiloye, however, appealed to the Federal Government to release the monthly local government allocation to the reinstated APC chairmen in the state.
He said the allocation would enable the chairmen to fast-track development, which had been neglected at the grassroots since their purported sack in 2022.
According to Oyintiloye, since the chairmen have lost considerable time, with less than nine months left in their tenure, the timely release of the allocation would help them implement developmental projects at the grassroots.
Oyintiloye, a former lawmaker, also commended the Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, for displaying a high level of professionalism in handling security issues and abuse of power in the state.
According to him, “Since 2022, when the chairmen were sacked, there has been no tangible development at the grassroots in the state.
“I want to appeal to the Federal Government to start releasing the monthly allocation to the reinstated APC council chairmen in the state from this month.
“The chairmen were unable to work since 2022 when they were sacked, but now that the Court of Appeal has reinstated them, the allocation should be released to them.
“This is the time for people at the grassroots to feel the impact of the government, which has been neglected since 2022.
“I also want to commend the Inspector-General of Police for ensuring peace in the state and for the professional manner in which he has handled security challenges,” he said.
Oyintiloye praised the council chairmen for resuming duty in their various councils despite intimidation and harassment by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
He, however, urged local government staff to resume work.
“There is adequate security in place for them to contribute their quota as expected,” he added.
He further noted that the resumption of staff would enable the chairmen to settle down and deliver the dividends of democracy that the people at the grassroots have been yearning for.
DAILY POST recalls that Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke, while swearing in the chairmen and deputies who emerged victorious in the local government elections on Saturday, urged them not to resume duty at the council secretariats on Monday (yesterday) to avert any violent clashes.
Meanwhile, the reinstated APC chairmen had issued a 72-hour deadline for local government workers to resume work or face termination of their appointments.
However, countering this directive, the Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), in a statement by its chairman, Christopher Arapasopo, maintained that the directive for workers not to resume at the local government secretariats remained in force.
Arapasopo stated that the directive remained operative as the lives and welfare of workers were paramount to the labor union.
