The funeral for Oded Lifshitz, an 83-year-old hostage who was kidnapped from Kibbutz Nir Oz and killed in captivity, is underway at the kibbutz today.
Lifshitz’s coffin arrived at the entrance of Kibbutz Nir Oz earlier this afternoon, with family, friends, and community members gathering to pay their final respects.
His remains were returned to Israel by Hamas last week, alongside those of members of the Bibas family, as part of the ongoing hostage release agreement.
President Isaac Herzog is expected to deliver remarks during the funeral, honoring Lifshitz’s memory and acknowledging the profound loss felt by his family and the nation.
Lifshitz was among dozens taken hostage during the October 7, 2023 attack on southern Israel, which sparked the ongoing conflict between Israel and Hamas.
