Gov Nwifuru calls for action to end sit-at-home

Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Nwifuru, has charged the new General Officer Commanding 82 Division to intensify efforts to end the sit-at-home orders often declared by non-state actors in the South-East region on Mondays.

Nwifuru also advised security agencies to introduce a reward system that would boost the morale of officers and personnel in the agencies.

In a statement made available to journalists by the Chief Press Secretary to the Governor, Dr Monday Uzor, at the weekend, Nwifuru made the call when the new General Officer Commanding 82 Division of the Nigerian Army, Enugu, Major-General Oluyemi Olatoye, paid him a courtesy call at his office in Government House Centenary City, Abakaliki.

“I am very much sure you are conversant with the South-East geopolitical environment.

“God has been with us, together with the good military officers deployed to our state. I want to assure you of our continued support, and I am confident in the calibre of men serving here in this state. We have been showing good support for the dedicated officers by giving cash and even car gifts to some of them,” Governor Nwifuru said.

Speaking earlier, Major-General Olatoye commended Governor Nwifuru for his support to the military and assured him that he would collaborate with the state to maintain law and order.

“I assumed command as the General Officer Commanding 82 Division on 27 January 2025. The purpose of the visit is to enhance my knowledge of the operating environment and the sectors, their challenges, and the future of the command. It will also enhance inter-agency and inter-service collaboration.

“I want to thank you for ensuring that all the agencies are well marshalled for better outcomes. I was informed of the cash rewards given to some of our men who performed excellently.

“I appreciate the honour and respect you have for the military,” Olatoye said.

The increasing cases of cervical cancer and other related diseases among women and girls in Nigeria have been attributed to poor menstrual hygiene.

This was disclosed by Dr Valda Martins, a lecturer at the Federal University of Technology, FUT, Minna, during the launch of her book, Menstrual Hygiene Among Women, in Minna, Niger State.

Dr Martins emphasised that poor menstrual hygiene management is a major contributor to the rising cases of cervical cancer and other related diseases among women and girls.

The academic noted that the lack of awareness and sensitisation on menstrual hygiene has left many women and girls unable to properly manage their menstruation.

“I have interacted with over 6,000 girls through outreaches and school visits, and I was shocked to discover that 90% of them lack basic knowledge of proper menstrual hygiene.

“This is a ticking time bomb, and if we don’t take urgent action, cases of cervical cancer and other related diseases will continue to rise,” Dr Martins said.

Dr Mu’azu Babangida Aliyu, former Governor of Niger State, who was represented by his Chief of Staff, Hamisu Jankaro, emphasised the importance of menstrual hygiene management.

“Menstrual hygiene is not just a health issue but also a human rights issue. Every girl has the right to menstrual hygiene education and resources, and it is our collective responsibility to ensure that this right is protected,” he said.

Hezbollah gives Israel February 18 deadline to withdraw from Lebanon

The head of the Lebanese armed group Hezbollah on Sunday issued an ultimatum to Israeli troops to withdraw fully from Lebanese territory.

While giving Israeli forces until 18 February to withdraw, Hezbollah stated that it had no reason to maintain a military presence at any post in southern Lebanon.

Under a truce brokered by Washington in November, Israeli troops were granted 60 days to withdraw from southern Lebanon, where they had been waging a ground offensive against fighters from the Iran-backed Hezbollah since early October.

That deadline was later extended to 18 February, but Israel’s military requested to retain troops at five posts in southern Lebanon.

“Israel must withdraw completely on 18 February. It has no pretext, no five points or other details. This is the agreement,” Hezbollah Secretary-General Naim Qassem said.

According to Qassem, any Israeli military presence on Lebanese soil after 18 February would be considered an occupying force.
