Address hoodlum attacks in our community – Modakeke community begs govt
The Modakeke community in Osun State has called on President Bola Tinubu and Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, to step in and halt a series of attacks allegedly carried out by hoodlums in the town.
In a statement issued on Wednesday, the President of the Modakeke Progressive Union, MPU, Prof. Peter Olawuni, stressed the urgent need for intervention by both the federal and the state governments.
He explained that tensions in the area escalated after a signpost welcoming visitors to the town, located in the Urban Day Area, was destroyed by suspected hoodlums.
The most recent attack, DAILY POST gathered, occurred early on Tuesday when a group of about 17 individuals, reportedly coming from the Mayfair area of Ile-Ife, tore down the signpost at the entry point into Modakeke town.
Olawuni, who condemned the act as a provocation, revealed that he had reported the incident to Chief Oyeyemi Oriowo, the traditional Chief of Staff to the Ooni of Ife, as well as the Osun State Police Command in an effort to prevent further unrest.
Olawuni said, “I called the DPO and he said he has informed the Area Commander. I came here to inspect what happened and I called the Area Commander too. We were told to handle the whole situation with intelligence and moderation; that was why we called a meeting at the palace yesterday.
“The demand of the Modakeke community is to let peace reign in the community. I think it is becoming too much for us and we have experienced so many incidents in Modakeke.
“We have visited Governor Adeleke two times over the issue of security in both Ife and Modakeke. There was even a time we visited the deputy governor in his office and we declared that what they are doing here is provocative.
“The community is seeking immediate intervention of Governor Adeleke and President Tinubu.”
Speaking on the development, the Secretary of the Ife Development Board, Lawrence Omidiora, stressed that dialogue remained the only option available to manage the situation.
Omidiora, who said violence should be avoided at all costs, insisted that it would be inappropriate to immediately conclude that the perpetrators of the act were from Ile-Ife.
In his words, “I think if the incident is true, I want to believe that some people are looking for a fight between the two communities.
“It would be very wrong for anyone to assume that the people who did it were from Ife. If someone harbours that kind of thought, it is because of the acrimony that existed in the past and perhaps suspicion.
“The truth of the matter is that we need to look for means to resolve the issue because fighting will not cause any positive development in both communities. The situation will take care of itself if we allow development to take place.
“We will sit down together to sort our differences in that regard because there are routes belonging to both communities. We are looking at how to ensure that there is peace all the time.”

Twenty-two camps of Lakurawa have been destroyed and several others have been killed by troops during Operation Fansan Yamma in Sokoto State.
The troops also recovered weapons and ammunition during their operations in the state.
The Acting General Commanding Officer, 8 Division and Commander Sector 2, Operation FASAN YAMMA, Brigadier General Ibikunle Ajose, made the revelation while addressing the Special Brigade deployed to crush Lakurawa in Sokoto and Kebbi states by the Chief of Defence Staff.
According to him, “Prior to the deployment of the Brigade, troops of 8 Division under the auspices of Operation FANSAN YAMMA had begun precursor and shaping operations into the forests and enclaves of Rumji Dutse East of Sarma, Tsauna and Bauni, Malgatawa, Gargao, Tsauna and Magara forest, Kaideji, Nakuru, Sama, Sanyinna, Kadidda, Kolo and Dancha villages in Illela, Tangaza, and Binji Local Government Areas.
“The operation has led to the destruction of about 22 camps, neutralization of several members of the sect, recovery of 4 rifles, 409 PKT 7.62mm NATO rounds, and 94 7.62mm special rounds of ammunition.”
He explained that the deployment of the Brigade would be an added impetus in frustrating the activities of the bandits and restoring normalcy to the affected communities and the North West in general.
The deployment, according to him, is to consolidate successes achieved in the ongoing precursor operation under Operation FOREST SANITY III (CHASE LAKURAWAS OUT).
Ajose charged the troops to ensure the total destruction of the Lakurawa sect, while urging them to abide by the rules of engagement and ensure the protection of lives and property of law-abiding citizens.
The Acting General Commanding Officer stated that the troops were selected and trained for the mission, saying that Nigerians are counting on their ability and professionalism to flush out the Lakurawa and bandits terrorizing their communities.

The Olowu of Owu Kingdom, Oba Saka Matemilola, has attributed the prevalence of indisciplined, uncultured, and questionable individuals on the throne to the flawed selection process of some traditional rulers.
According to the monarch, traditional rulers should embody high traditional and institutional values, serving as role models for their subjects, who rely on them for guidance and support.
The monarch stated this at a journalists’ hangout tagged “An Evening with Olowu,” organized by the Nigeria Union of Journalists, NUJ, Ogun State Council, on Thursday in Abeokuta.
Recall that the Olorile-Ifo, in Ifo Local Government Area of the state, Oba Abdulsemiu Ogunjobi, had allegedly assaulted a 73-year-old man.
The monarch, in a two-minute viral video, boasted of his influence over law enforcement agencies and threatened the chief, saying, “Even if you die, we shall bury you and nothing will happen.”
However, the Olowu of Owu, while responding to the damages some questionable individuals have done to the traditional stool, called for a constitutional role to define the responsibilities of traditional rulers in governance.
He warned that without such clarity, traditional rulers might continue to act arbitrarily.
Oba Matemilola warned against individuals assuming royal positions with the mindset that they can do as they please once enthroned, stressing that the roles of traditional rulers shouldn’t be motivated by self-interest or a desire for prestige.
He said, “It’s important that there is a constitutional role which clearly defines the responsibilities of traditional rulers in governance.
“Unless we have that, we will continue to see monarchs acting arbitrarily after assuming office.”
The Olowu also decried the growing culture of materialism among the youth, attributing it to the misplaced priorities of society, saying, “To some, it has become the ultimate measure of success, leading to the purchase of traditional and academic titles.”
