Kano: Maternal mortality must crash to zero – Health Commissioner
The Kano State Government has reaffirmed its commitment to completely eradicating maternal mortality in the state, rather than just reducing it.
This was disclosed in a statement signed by the Information Officer of the Ministry of Health, Ibrahim Abdullahi, on Thursday.
According to the statement, The state’s Commissioner for Health, Dr. Abubakar Labaran Yusuf, made the declaration during the Partners Coordination Forum (PCF) meeting held in Kano.
The commissioner emphasized that the administration of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf is determined to transform the health sector, particularly in addressing maternal and neonatal mortality.
“Our goal is not just to reduce maternal mortality but to crash it to zero,” Dr. Labaran stated.
“There should be no room for maternal deaths in Kano. This is simple and achievable if we put our hands together, by Allah’s grace.”
Dr. Labaran revealed that the state government has already renovated several secondary healthcare facilities and awarded contracts for the renovation of over 200 primary health centers.
He noted that these efforts align with the administration’s vision of ensuring quality healthcare services at both primary and secondary levels, with a special focus on women and children.
The commissioner expressed concern over statistics showing that over 70% of women in Kano prefer home deliveries assisted by traditional birth attendants due to a lack of confidence in hospital services.
“Many women believe delivering in their matrimonial rooms is safer than coming to hospitals, as they have lost confidence in getting proper medical attention,” he said.
“This is why we are improving our hospitals and ensuring at least one functional primary healthcare facility in each ward of Kano State.”
Dr. Labaran further called on development partners to align their programs with the state government’s objectives for better coordination and efficiency.
“Our goal is one project, one budget, one outcome. We have the resources and will receive support from the federal government and partners. We need accountability and transparency to achieve our set target.”
